I haven't seen anyone taking them down but though for sure that they were completely down at some point. If they're not going to be working on it anytime soon wouldn't they at least board it up to protect the inside from the elements?

The boards were put up half way as guardrails for a private party on the top. I believe that the building is out there being marketed as future/potential office space.

You are correct MattH, I was at that party. The building is slated to be office space.

What's the deal with this building. Is work every going to get started on it? This is one of the bigger eyesores in the city, and it greets everyone on their way into the city.

I've been wondering about this project as well. Someone's taken the time to gut the place, and everytime I'm on the PSB I can't help but wonder what's next. Eyesore is an understatement, its an embarassment!

Since Powell Square is just one part of the Chouteau's Landing project, I'm guessing it might be a while. The developers are currently renovating a strip of buildings on Fourth Street, so that's probably their top priority right now.

I heard an unconfirmed rumor that Powell Square is going to be demolished. Anyone have any info?

That would be fine with me if something is actually built in it's place. It looks horrible right now, but that design that was floating around a couple of years back would still be really cool. If not that, then just go ahead and build a high-rise.

From the Chouteau's Landing website, Powell Square will become...

The Artery

The Artery, a progressive, interactive art center, will anchor Chouteau's Landing. Inspired by the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia, The Artery will include working artists' studios, galleries, educational centers and event facilities. With renovations scheduled to start in 2007, The Artery will challenge and transform St. Louis' growing creative community while building the City's residential, commercial and tourist appeal.

That will be a major improvement over the current Powell Square! I'm looking forward to it becoming a reality.

Please start this soon.

Nothing says welcome to St. Louis better than crossing the bridge from Illinois to see this bombed out building.

What is most surprising about this development is that it is one massive redevelopment project by essentially a start-up company without any experience in redevelopment or no listed other projects. It came out of nowhere and depending on its ability to create a desirable development/community out of former industrial lands, it may become a foremost company in the field and continue. I would love to see them expand this type of riverfront development more along the riverfront.

What's "hot" real estate is waterfront housing. So let's build our share along the riverfront and maybe Chivitis will lead the way.

Only problem with that is that waterfront housing in STL has a terrrrible view. Maybe waterfront housing in NYC, Chicago, Vancouver, or San Diego because they have beautiful views. We have a tacky casino, a coal plant, and a virtual wasteland... sigh.

Can someone clarify though, Mizzou's post was a recent update from the site or is it the same thing they said when they created the site 6 months ago?

Living in the Mansion House, I now realize that our riverfront views are best looking north or south, in other words, up river or down river. That way, you don't have to look at the tacky casino (albeit another, but more upscale casino instead, when looking north).

With "The Artery," views to the north will have the Arch, while views south will have the MacArthur bridge. And since this planned rehab for Powell Square sits south of the Poplar, it won't even have direct views of the Tacky Queen to the east.

I do remember that the Riverfront towers in the initial CL renderings were angled NE and SW which does give a better view than directly E and W. But nonetheless the Ill side is really sad. I have often wished that it had some 10+ storey residential buildings to make the area between Eads and Poplar nicer, but I know the chances of that are close to nil.

Whatever happened to that 70 foot fountain they were sposed to put across the river??

It's there. And it shoots a lot higher than 70 feet.

I thought I would type in "Powell Square" into Google to see if I could find anything about it; namely, why it hasn't been brought down.

I found this

http://stlcin.missouri.org/devprojects/ ... jectID=176

Any information? I couldn't imagine someone actually rehabbing this.

PostSep 29, 2007#50

I was beginning to question if I had the correct name of the building when I saw these renderings, because I couldn't imagine taking a building that looks that pathetic and actually trying to renovate it. I'm more apt to looking at downtown while driving across 64 and say "Wow. Thats cool," but a friend of mine had his mom fly in to STL from VA Beach a couple years ago and her exact words were that St. Louis looks "dirty." Its ashame an eyesore like this has to sit right off of a main artery through the city.
