And submerged. Under the Mississippi.

I understand, but most of those mistakes are problems becasue they are common sense things that we have not done yet or done poorly. The Ambassador, along with the Century, was something special that we ALREADY HAD and replaced it with something of unfathomably poor quality! A different kind of mistake, if equally unforgivable.

There's a write-up on the plaza in today's Business Journal.

A recap:

- Construction will start in mid-July

- $8.2 million - financing was scheduled to be finalized yesterday

- It will include sculpture, extensive landscaping, benches and a waterfall/pond

- Anticipated completion: April 2008

- Funding includes a $1 million endowment fund for maintenance

The rendering looks pretty nice - a thick grove of trees at the eastern end, a water feature at the northern end, trees on the western end.

It looks like something will be built in front of the southern wall of the Orpheum Theater - I can't tell if it's a decorative screen or what exactly it is, but it looks interesting. It also looks like the Roberts Tower will have a smaller section (2-3 stories) that extends all the way to the Orpheum and under the upper floors of the Mayfair.

Won't this area kind of be a mess during the contstruction of the Roberts tower?

I'm not all that tech-savy, so here is my best effort at posting the rendering:

This is where a great piece of public art could go.

Very, very true. I'd much rather have a downtown of art than one strip. Besides, something remarkable would really give an otherwise blah plaza a better sense of place - of course the art wouldn't make the plaza, but if the plaza was done well, the art would top it off.

What do you guys think are the chances that this thing will actually start next month? I can't wait to see SOMETHING happen with that busted-ass parking lot. IT'S JUST SITTING THERE. Looks like total sh*t and makes walking east on Locust in that area hotter than hell. Its like a solar oven. South exposure, asphalt, and the walls of the orpheum and the mayfair reflecting light down into it. I hope they put some money in the budget for somebody to water those trees or they are going to get cooked.

From the rendering, it looks like they planned for that. The ones on the east side of the plaza are already dead.

Anyway, isn't that the old design of the Roberts Building?

And people cannot even park there as it is chained off. Again, I don't see why we need another plaza? Perhaps the plot of useless concrete where the Ambassador once stood should be the plaza? Why make another?

If this is the latest design for the Roberts Tower, then the BJ rendering of the plaza is rather old...

I think the latest rendering of the building is the one on the giant sign affixed to the side of the Mayfair.

I actually think, if we need one good quality plaza, right across from the Old Post Office is a good place. I would rather see that former Ambassador lot get sold for a new tower if I had to pick between the two.

The article says that the financing is in place, so I'd say the chances are pretty good.

Perhaps you could buy the land from them and put up a condo tower.

True. But the BJ article is showing the design for Roberts Tower from 4 years ago, when it was first proposed. So, the latest design has the tower abutting the Orpheum, with the entire south face of the Mayfair Hotel covered...that's all I was trying to clarify.

No. But you continualy use phrases like "they" should build a tower on that lot, or "they" should develop mixed use on that lot, etc... You seem fond of spending other people's money for them. I simply pointed out that maybe you could be proactive and actually do it yourself.

i think it looks pretty nice - especially all the water - but there does seem to be a little too much concrete. sure, with all the digital people crowded around the movie screen it doesn't look so barren, but when is that ever going to happen? break that space up with a metro-link station or a casino or some paddle-boats or something.
