I think the renderings look great! I am curious to see what kind of entertainment the plaza will have booked(I assume that big screen is there for a reason). This could separate the great from good and the remembered from forgotten. I hope it is well regulated and doesnt become congregating sight for trouble. Not bashing, actually I am very excited, but would like to see the full potential reached and as a downtown resident would love to frequent OPO Plaza quite often when it is finished. :)

As far as entertainment goes, I don't know what will show on the big screen, but if they book bands, it will almost certainly be bad cover bands, Motown oldies acts, or some Garth Brooks wanna-be country band. In other words, safe. Look to the VP Fair as your guide.

I'd love for them to show local sporting events on it... that would be neat.

^ yeah, they do that in Europe (mostly for soccer games). Having such events broadcast in public spaces creates a great dynamic experience and really enlivens the place. Additionally, they could show free movies, political speeches, art installations, etc. This space could be great and has the potential to become a landmark in downtown... similar to the successful and influential plaza in front of the Seagram Building in New York City.

I drove by the site today and noticed they had put up a significant portion of the perforated metal panels that border the screen proper. Any word on the exact nature of the screen? I'm assuming it will be an LCD screen. I suppose it could be a projection system, but that seems pretty outdated, especially for a progressive project of this quality and ambition.

I was thinking about that today. That would be great! Also I was discussing with on of my friends the other day that the big screen thats supposed to be in the new City Garden(Gateway Mall) should broadcast cardinals games. How nice would it be to pull up a lawn chair on a nice day and enjoy the game.

And not just the big 3 pro teams--between St. Louis Athletica, minor league baseball, indoor soccer (still?) arena football, Wash U, SLU, UMSL, prep sports, there's a lot that could be broadcast.

of course you may have intened that when you said 'local sporting events'

With the Roberses so innately involved in this project, and especially throughout the local blocks, you can bet they'll have a strong role in the programming here. This being StL, I would in fact bet that they'll announce a contract with the City for managing the programming of the site. Makes sense to outsource costs and spur the local businesses, too.

I hope, and expect, they'd keep a strong minimum on country music and focus on jazz.

Does that mean we can expect reruns of My Wife and Kids* and Family Feud* on the big screen since they're on WRBU, the Roberts' TV station? :P

* I had to look up WRBU's schedule on DVR just now- I can't remember the last time I watched that channel. Actually, I don't remember ever watching it. And now I know why.

Dude, I would SOOOOOOOOO sit outside and happily watch Richard Dawson kiss random people!

'Wait... Ch. 46... reruns... other hosts... Oh god, not the guy from "Home Improvement!" The city definitely shouldn't be subjected to his "abilities" as host. *shudder*

I suspect the Roberts Bros. might want to tie it in with events in the Orpheum somehow, but I'm not sure how well that'd work. A lot of people might say, 'Why pay for tickets to a show, when you can sit outside on the plaza and watch it for free?'. The tie-in could work well for film and music festivals though.

Will this be on all the time, or just for events? I suppose there might be enough traffic (or there will be, once the streets reopen) to sell advertising.

While there is certainly a great potential to make money off advertising, I really hope it doesn't happen. The last thing we need in an urban plaza in the heart of downtown is billboards.

When they are not showing a movie, show, or local sporting event....I think that's what will get.....advertisement. You don't think they spent MILLIONS on this plaza for nothing do you? lol

I would have no problem with advertising, as long as it wasn't a static display. I'd rather have something showing all the time than nothing. Look at Times Square - all the lights and excitement, and it's all advertising!

I suppose that's true. Dynamic advertising could help enliven the plaza during non-peak hours...

...However, hopefully there wouldn't be sound. :D

How about showing CNN? Maybe they could do a picture in picture with advertising on most of the screen and news in the corner.

That statement is twice redundant. All you needed to say was Show Me St. Louis. :)

That ramp overlooking the plaza is going to be such a nice, dynamic space. Very nice design from an aesthetic and spatial point of view. Man, I can't wait for this to be finished.

That's (partly) what makes it great. If you don't like that space then you would dislike a significant portion of 21st century architecture. If you want everything to be level, at right angles and without slanting walls that torque, then progressive architecture must not be your thing.(?) :) And this ramp is pretty tame considering lots of stuff out there.

I for one commend the ramp design for pushing the limits of what St. Louisians are spatially use to. It's going to be an amazing space, when it's done I think I might eat lunch up there instead of in the plaza proper. :D
