Gotcha. Sorry for giving you a hard time. Unfortunately, there probably will be some people that dislike the space because of dizziness. A precedent is Daniel Libeskind's Denver Art Museum:

so do we know what will be shown on the screen? How often will it be lit up?

the DAM sucks. it leaks, at least it did, not sure if it was fixed yet, and yes, it makes you vomit when you go in there. not that the art is bad, the art is good. but what is a few hundred million dollar building worth if no one can enjoy themselves in it?
but back to the plaza. looks nice. only problem is there will be two unoccupied buildings surrounding it(arcade and chemical, i will not call it the alexa) and they are not small ones either. i need to win the lottery.

^ I'm not sure the occupancy of the BOE building either. I can't find a thread on it.

Only some people feel sick in it. From an Architectural and experiential stand point it's great. There aren't many building in the world that can create so much emotion while visiting, both good and bad. I think the building is fantastic and has been a huge success for the area. It has spawned high-end projects adjacent to it and has put emphasis on redeveloping the civic space in front of the capitol building.
But many people just don't get down on Libeskind's buildings. To each there own.
Nit-picking on a leaky roof is almost irrelevant because MANY famous buildings leak when first built. Frank Lloyd Wright once said that if the roof doesn't leak then it's not architecture... and he was serious. Buildings that push limits will not be perfect when first built and often require a fixing of some problem areas.
Could the building be better? Yes. But it is still one of Denver's (and therefore Colorado's) most important pieces of Architecture. I visit it every time I go visit my family in Colorado.
Anyway, I'm also curious as to what will be shown on the screen in the plaza. showing ads will ruin the artistic integrity of the space and I pray ([-o<) they only use it for special occasions: sports, political events, art shows, movies, etc. when not in use, the metal panels will look great as is.

^ I hope the screen is used as often as possible. I would love to see Goonies playing as I walk from the Metrolink to Rooster for french toast one Sunday morning!

It would appear that they've done a decent job leasing the lofts - the lofts in that building are great - but not the first floor retail space. Maybe they're waiting for the plaza to be completed.

Downtown’s newest park, the $8.8 million Post Office Plaza, is set to open April 3, a year behind schedule and $600,000 over budget.
The park’s owners blame underground debris and bad weather for the delay and cost overruns, and they are now scrambling to make up a funding shortfall. The park will have a soft opening in late February, but a grand opening won’t happen until April.
Located on Locust Street between Eighth and Ninth streets, the park ranks as one of St. Louis’ most expensive at $293 per square foot. The park will feature a sculpture by artist Igor Mitoraj at the base of a cascading three-story waterfall.
The Danforth Foundation, the park’s biggest funder, is contributing an extra $400,000 grant to cover the shortfall. It also has issued a loan through the end of 2009 to pay for the remaining $200,000.

Three story waterfall sounds pretty cool. This is what I would consider "good green space" in our downtown, same with the new gateway mall space between 8th and 10th. However the mall west of Tucker I would have to say is still worthless and blows choad.

I would watch Goonies every damn day if I could. And if it were showing outside, I KNOW I'd be able to pull my friends in from the near 'burbs to watch it downtown.

That's really good to hear, I know at one time they were planning some pretty pricy apts. And I never heard anything after that.
i hope this doesn't become another bum park. i can see someone showering under the waterfall.
I hope this really becomes an active space. Both as a regular spot for downtown workers and dwellers, and as a destination for downtown visitors. I have been likening it to Fountain Square in Cincinnati in my head. FS is much bigger and now has an ice rink, bolstered retail and restaurant options, etc, but in terms of building density around it it seems comparable. I hope the screen gets used 24/7 not just for certain events. Running national or local news via broadcast or marquee text seems appropriate. Advertisements seem inevitable. Every local sporting event should be played. Exceptions for special events. Every big sporting event, NCAA tourney games, playoffs, superbowl, etc. Scheduled movies throughout spring, summer are a no brainer.

This is a privately owned plaza. Unwelcome visitors will be shooed away pronto.

This plaza is really shaping up now. They insalled a few of the new light posts yesterday (these things are huge but very modern looking) and you can see where the water basins will be. I'll try and get some photos this weekend.

It really is looking good - I checked it out yesterday.
The Roberts Tower is also going up FAST. It won't be long before the banner on the Mayfair is no longer visible!
Does anyone know if the video screen is done or is it going to extend farther down.

The Downtown Partnership has grant money available for nonprofit arts organizations interested in programming entertainment at the plaza.

word on the street is that the screen will not work for movies after all...it is too reflective and too high...

Let's hope they get this situation remedied!

Looks like the plaza will be open soon. Lot's of cleanup going on the past couple weeks, ans almost all of the landscaping is in place. The new lights look great.

So what's the proposed use for the screen?STL63101 wrote:word on the street is that the screen will not work for movies after all...it is too reflective and too high...

^^Those street lights do look fantastic. I'm really glad they chose something nice and modern. Having typical lights would detract from the design quality in the rest of the plaza. (Not that they look bad under normal circumstances, but when you have a project like this they always seem out of place.)
