I've been taking a lot of pics and finally set up an account to host them. The Salvation army building has been done for a little while now. Not a huge fan of the parking to the side of it but the building itself is nice. I like the curvature of the towers. The flags make it look a bit like a government office building though. Hope they can fill in the rest of that block and get rid of the parking.

I wonder what something like this costs per square foot to build in comparison to the Aventura.

^Good question.

I'd love to see the facade on the storage building in the background (green & yellow) returned to its original splendor.

Also, while it sounds like there are no plans to have the trolley go down it, I'd love to see the cut-through between Locust & Olive opened back up, and Josephine Baker Ave. opened back up between Washington & Olive. Their closing has resulted in two parking lots, two empty lots, and the Hotel Ignacio's driveway. Basically just more faulty SLUrbanism manifest destiny.
Now:

Then:

I'm adding "New Plaza" to the list of new rooftop signs I'd like to see in Midtown along with "KDHX" and "Urban Chestnut"

Amazing how much more that building is a part of the city with those streets open.

I used to live in the pink building right next to this one... and I messaged a few city leaders about opening up the road again (this was probably back in 2009). The responses I recieved were vague and slightly pessimistic. To paraphrase, the apartment owners (Kohner Properties) aren't willing to give up the private parking and it's a long shot that the road ever gets rebuilt.

^Cool. I'd like to think that a streetcar would decrease the apartment building's necessity for parking on three sides, but I'm sure the owners of the building won't see it that way.

^ looks pretty good, but considering that it's all on the same block why can't the parking be consolidated behind the buildings? there's really no excuse for sidewalk-fronting surface lots in this development.

With all the problems surrounding NLEC, we should really applaud the Salvation Army in midtown and St. Patrick's Center downtown. These two organizations really show us how it's done when it comes to helping the homeless with housing, work and help in overcoming substance abuse.

1. I wonder if Mike Bishop is one of Bob Bishop's kids.

2. It's pretty easy to argue that the seminal force in Midtown Alley's redevelopment was creative-services agencies (three in particular). It would be great if a whole bunch more joined them down there.

I would love to see the advertising agencies/creative companies expand there and downtown. Advertising is a huge money maker and has drawn many of my friends up to Chicago after college.

Anyone know what's planned for the 2900 block of Olive? The Locust Business District opened a gated parking lot on one corner last year, and the other buildings appear to be owned by G.I. Construction--the G.I. being Gateway Interiors immediately to the north on Locust. The non-original storefronts have been removed, making me think historic renovation may be planned. There was a brief story here recently:

Anybody know more?

Sorry, I don't know anything about that one, but there's a new "interactive mural" coming next-door to the Moto Museum:

"The Moto Wall at Grand Center
Grand Center has partnered with national artists MOMO and Re+Public to bring a state of the art, interactive mural to Grand Center. The mural will be painted on the Moto Museum wall in Grand Center and the interactive, augmented reality piece can only be viewed through your smartphone or tablet. The mural will be 85 feet wide and 21 feet high."

Nice jobs addition to Midtown Alley:

http://www.stltoday.com/business/column ... cf264.html

Although this is a relocation from LafSquare and not a new business in town, it looks like it is more jobs and it will help strengthen an emerging district. Lafayette Square will be just fine. I do hope the workers can focus as they'll be right next to Urban Chestnut.

I noticed the Salvation Army was working on renovating those buildings on Washington. I also noticed what looked like some ground work happening next to their newer buildings across the street. Are they finally starting construction on the other proposed buildings for that big vacant lot? I posted a video of theirs recently that depicted what the buildings would look like. I really hope they're getting on that now. Midtown is filling up! With this, various restaurant openings, some proposals in Grand Center, the streetcar, and Midtown Station, I see Midtown in a few years booming just as much as Downtown is today!

I believe that is the planned new construction that will fill up the 2900 block of Washington as part of its overall campus plan.

Yes. I believe they envision four buildings in the block bounded by Washington, Locust, Garrison and TE Huntley. I think this is the northeast corner of that block. The completed veterans' housing is at the southeast corner.

They're really doing a great job with that block. Good steady progress, too.
