This is a major reason for why they own that property. Originally they wanted Chaifetz Arena north of Olive, but couldn't come to an agreement with the Drake Plaza Apts. along with a few other businesses to buy them out. They wanted Chaifetz to be right next to Grand Center...so they had a great idea that just didn't work out.Alex Ihnen wrote:^ did they also buy as they planned for Chaifetz north of Olive? That fell through and perhaps they're left with several properties they wouldn't otherwise own?

The Salvation Army project is looking great. The massing is perfect; really fills in the streetscape. I specially like the rounded cornice effect; must be inspired by some of the Cupples Warehouse buildings.

I agree. I noticed it when I was at the Fountain on Locust the other night and was quite impressed.framer wrote:The Salvation Army project is looking great. And here's some info on the new bakery and coffee shop on Olive: http://www.saucemagazine.com/blog/?p=19182

Nice. It was also good to see the good design on the Near North Central development featured on urbanstl.... more like this please!

^^^ looks terrific! better than i expected, actually. but what's with the weird panels between the upper and lower windows? how about some decorative concrete or something? anything but cheap-looking metal shim.
Not bad. Granted it's an SA infill, I just wish St. Louis would start building more modern-aesthetic apartment buildings. Minneapolis seems to do a good job at blending modern with old (historic).
On one hand, it's good that St. Louis is being St. Louis in design, but it does run the risk of looking dated with projects like these. The building looks like a renovated St. Louis public school building or red brick Rosati-Kain High School.
Although it's clean, new, modern on the inside, fills a need, fills a gap, etc. it still looks a bit dated.

^yep - some development like this is great - if the next project and the one after that and the one after that... all follow the same design, it's going to be bad
I can understand why many of you want to see more modern designs, but this is an overall a very attractive building to me. It definitely beats 80% of the infill we see in the city. This should be the basic model for infill in the city. This along with the North Sarah project complement the historic architecture of the city. I predict the next decade or so we will see more infill throughout the central corridor, especially if a streetcar line comes along. This kind of infill gives the perception that St. Louis is a much larger city, I always drive out of towners through our central corridor from Kingshighway to the river and they say St. Louis has the stature of a much larger city. The key is filling in the gaps.

^ I agree that this infill is fine and while hopefully more modern designs will be included in the mix in the future, and I'm sure they will, its great to see that more projects are returning to a good relationship to the street and neighborhood. Besides the North Sarah project, another similar project that comes to mind is the Senior Apartments on S. Grand with first-floor retail.

I noticed that the Bauman Safe Company has relocated from its building on Locust, which was listed for sale earlier. Anyone know if there are plans to redevelop the building?
Question answered - Joy Christensen owns the Fountain on Locust:debaliviere wrote:I noticed that the Bauman Safe Company has relocated from its building on Locust, which was listed for sale earlier. Anyone know if there are plans to redevelop the building?
After being out of town for a few months, I finally got to see the Salvation Army building on Saturday night. I only got to drive by but it looked really nice to me. Fit in well with the street. Don't understand everyones beef?
Locust is becoming really awesome btw, really excited for DT-Midtown-CWE to finally have a coherent link

I'd love to see a streetcar line run down Locust through Midtown and Downtown West. The experience for the tourist or conventioneer would be pretty awesome from Downtown to the Loop ... eight linear miles of non-stop urban density.
So there will be Pi and The Good Pie a mere 5 blocks apart? I predict a lot of people showing up to the wrong restaurant for dinner, but then again, there are about 6 Thai restaurants in the same span, and people seem to figure it out.debaliviere wrote:Per the P-D, The Good Pie is moving to the Loop.
