Since opening, Center Ice has closed access from the front (Olive) side of the building. Previously, you could enter that way, passing beside the brewery area.
Now you have to walk a block out of the way, around Pappy's and through the back parking lot.
This is a terrible idea for that stretch of street (even though it sometimes feels like I'm the only one walking there).

Brennan jokes that the building, a former automobile showroom and warehouse, is "the ugliest one on the block," but notes that upcoming renovations will remove its facade. He hopes to have the new space open this fall.

^ You can almost taste Midtown Alley hitting a higher gear.... lots of commercial rehabs going on; would be curious to know how much square footage and how much is for lease. It's so tempting to see a future not so far off of in the future of residential, shops, and whatnot opening up and joining the growing number of creative firms and restaurants already cropping up.
^ Well, demolishing 3201 Locust was not part of my vision but the church owner applied for it last week.

I assume it's for more church parking but who knows. Does the Landmarks Association ever publicly advocate for the preservation of buildings like this? I feel like they used to.

Took a stroll down here this morning and it's amazing how much development activity there is going on. Really we're down to just a handful of buildings on Locust with no apparent plan underway from Jefferson all the way to Grand. Remarkable. And if this Beaumont Exchange rehab and related infill get done, oh my.

I guess the Jefferson Connector will start soon. Midtown Malone was out to bid under “Altman Charter Company” and the State Farm at Locust and Jefferson moved out. Hope we hear something soon regarding a start and if the hotel was redesigned.

In another transaction, the SLDC board also voted to allocate $5 million in the federal credits to developer Jassen Johnson’s Jefferson Connector project in Midtown and Downtown West.
Johnson hopes to rehab five buildings on Locust Street just west of Jefferson Avenue and build a parking garage to service those spaces and a future phase of redevelopment he envisions.
He recently completed the rehab of the 2315 Locust Street building into offices and a new restaurant space.
The next phase would turn three buildings into commercial space and add offices and housing to the other two buildings. Johnson and his investors have spent over a decade rehabbing buildings in the neighborhood, aiming to better connect downtown and Midtown.
A more ambitious third phase would add a hotel and commercial space made out of shipping containers. That is scheduled to begin construction next year.

^ holy cow! i didn't even realize Fubar had closed. that place is a monolith... i kinda like it, though. digging the paint job. and it's a good reuse for an otherwise hideous/useless building.

sadly, things aren't looking good for 1711 Locust. such a gorgeous, unique building. would make a great creative space—something like Cannon Design's rehab of the old St. Louis Power House on Clark.

For those who haven't taken a stroll down Locust in Midtown recently, carve some time out on a nice day and do it. The corridor has completely changed over the past two years, really something special to see.
^ it’s also the best central corridor street to bike on. Calm, very little traffic, pavement is good.
