I'm not thrilled with the tinting business. Call me an elitist, but it just doesn't seem to fit the direction the neighborhood should be moving in.

Not sure what else it could have been put in that building other then auto related.
- 9,549
*without a significant investment..... the space is already build out for auto related business.
Tom Bess is automotive and fits in with the neighborhood. They look like they care.
The signage, etc of the tinting place makes it look pretty smarmy and just downright shady.

I assume the banner s just temporary
speaking of Tom Bess, i dont like it when they block the sidewalk with cars and leave it like that over night

Wouldn't the tinting business' lot generate way more economic activity - for property and business owners as well as local gov - if it were levelled, and replaced with five street-level storefronts with 1 or 2 floors of upstairs offices and apartments? Call me crazy...
- 9,549
yes but who would the occupants be of those 5 storefronts? storefronts aren't a "if you build it they will come" thing. there is already 20 or so apartments going into what use to be a Hope Lutheran School about half a mile from this location.

Isn't that true of pretty much every window-tinting place?shadrach wrote: The signage, etc of the tinting place makes it look pretty smarmy and just downright shady.

So the main building of the tint place is yellow brick and the new addition is red cinder block...

I hear the old home eco spot might become an Asian restaurant.

^ walking my dog this morning I noticed a little 8 by 11 sign in the window that says "Copper Pig, coming soon". Asian BBQ? Whatever it is, macklind is turning into a great street....
Did anyone see the news segment on KMOV tonight about escalating crime in the Southampton neighborhood? Apparently, crime is up 26% from last year. Not good, not good.

I haven't noticed it...i consistently leave my front door open when i go walk the dog and the back door is open almost all night sometimes.
its up 8.9% from Jan-Aug 13 to Jan-Aug 14.
Car theft is up and burglaries are the major ones
One thing i do wonder about burglaries is how many were at occupied homes and how many at homes that have a for sale sign. When my parents up a for sale sign at their house, 2 people hopped the fence and were making their way to the house in the same week, after having 0 in the previous 17 years at the same house.

Have to love the local news spinning small sample size #'s to present an alarming crime story. I'm so sick of that crap I can hardly watch it.
There was a rash of auto thefts in the neighborhood earlier in the year. Does it suck? Yes. Is it a good reflection of the state of the neighborhood? No.

Example if there is just 3 burglaries and this year there are 4 they say OMG crime is up in the city by 33% run for your lives

i had the same thought.Redbrickcity wrote:Example if there is just 3 burglaries and this year there are 4 they say OMG crime is up in the city by 33% run for your lives
yeah, the local news channels no longer serve their intended purpose. they're self-serving ratings generators, and that's it.

The guy that owns the UpStairs Lounge on S.Grand is trying to open the Copper Pig on macklind, next to the mack. tho i'm sure the mack will have its regulars show up at the liquor license hearing to oppose it
Fox 2 to the rescue!stlgasm wrote:Did anyone see the news segment on KMOV tonight about escalating crime in the Southampton neighborhood? Apparently, crime is up 26% from last year. Not good, not good.
SoHa Neighbors we need your help!
Fox 2 News in the Morning wants to do a neighborhood segment on SoHa!! They walked around recently and really liked our neighborhood. They will be in SoHa to do a live shoot for this show on Friday, October 31, 2014 (Halloween) from 5 am to 9 am. Yes, it’s early, but it will be fun!
We really need to drum up neighbor participation for them. Below is what they are looking for. If you (or your family or friends) are interested in participating and can be available Halloween morning please email me directly at my email: social@southamptonstl.org or call my cell phone at 314-681-3944. Please don’t directly reply to this post to pass along your information. I need to get back to them by tomorrow (Friday 10/3), so please let me know asap who can participate. Here’s what they need:
1) Kid Halloween Costume show: Kids and parents to be available for a Kid Halloween Costume show and mini-block party before school that morning. Location TBD, but probably around Macklind and Nottingham. A fun way to start off Halloween morning for your kids! On TV in your costumes (with your consent of course)!
2) Decorated houses: Elaborately decorated Halloween houses, preferably on Nottingham, but other areas of the neighborhood can respond also. They want to film some of the cool, decorated homes in the neighborhood and do some interviews on that.
3) Story ideas: Do you have a cool story about SoHa that you want to share? They are looking to interview people who want to share their historical or other stories about the neighborhood.
4) General neighborhood participation: Like I mentioned, there will be some sort of little gathering party, so if you are available that morning and want to get involved we welcome you!
They will also be highlighting some of the neighborhood business as well. We had such a great neighbor turnout for the National Night Out picnic and we are hoping to get a good crowd for this TV segment to represent SoHa!
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Thanks!

Touch of Gold tinting has repaired the main building red too. Looks nice, now I wish they would fix up the lot around the building and a touch of landscaping
Hearing a lot of issue with Tom Bess Automotive-- apparently the owner gets drunk at Stan's bar across the street a lot and turns the neighborhood into a race track. Yesterday morning one of the residents called him out on doing car repairs in the street and the owner apparently got into his car and chased the guy down (who was walking his dog) Neosho (one way street) going the wrong way like a maniac yelling "hey ahole, im going to pour anti freeze in your dog bowl" then went on to scream at him things like "go ahead and report it, i know all the cops" ect.
