I do not drive but my landlord rents out the three car garage behind the 4 family I live in to some small business instead of offering it to the his tenants to park in. I doubt he is the only one that does this.
As someone who lives in the neighborhood and uses the public street for parking (our garage isn't accessible for vehicles), it is certainly nice to have a spot in front of the house. As a parent with two kids, I would say that it becomes beyond annoying for families when you don't have a spot near your house. Safety and visibility become a factor there. So while I'm disappointed with the complaints, I get some of the concern.
Now, as far as developing this site, I'd love to see a smaller scale residential build here. Maybe two stories and not requiring the demo of the lot behind it. Incorporating the alley for off-street parking, and maybe adding back in a mural on the Macklind site to celebrate SouthHampton and mimic what was there when Maclind Deli still stood.

$0 zoning-only building permit application submitted for 4719-23 Macklind for a mixed-use building with 4 apartments.
This came out a couple weeks ago (the decsion was made about 2 years ago), but Keller Apothecary at 5346 Devonshire next to Big River Running is closing at the end of October. The owner of the building is marketing the space.

The multi-unit apartment building at 5300 Macklind appears to have undergone some type of renovation. New doors and windows at least from what I can see.
That building has dealt with becoming a "drug house" type deal in recent years, was condemned by the city last year. Seems like the issues have been sorted out and the renovation should attract more upstanding clientele.

The intersection of Macklind and Devonshire has taken some hits over the last year or so. Keller Apothecary closed, Sister's Sandwich Shop closed, and a design firm at the southwest corner is no longer there.
The sandwich shop was replaced by some type of kids art school type thing, definitely a downgrade though.

The former daycare at 5835 Macklind that closed a couple of years ago appears to be under construction.
Building permit says office for $80,000 late last year, and a $8.6k permit for plumbing in July.

Our Lady of Sorrow's old school is also ready to be re-opened as Gatway Science Academy Middle School. Apparently the students are being moved from the high school, located on Fyler, to this location.

I heard that Ameren wants to tear down at least 2 (maybe 3) apartment buildings at the corner of Loughborough and Macklind to build a new power substation. One is a 4 family and one is a 2 family, they were occupied as recently as a few years ago but have been vacant since Amren bought them.
Heard the neighborhood association tried to stop it, but it sounds like it's gonna end up happening. These buildings were built in the early 1920s.

Ald Stephens told me at the time that no way was this happening.

Hopefully they holds true. The reason I asked someone who knows more than me about it was because it seemed like there was some kind of activity going on around it, like fencing going up. Ill walk past again this weekend to check it out.quincunx wrote:From 2022

I mean these buildings were in fine shape. In a desirable neighborhood as well, these would get rehabbed quickly if we forced Ameren to sell
Ameren does not need to tear down historic housing at a corner of main roads for a dang substation
I think we have a good sound argument to fight this one
Do not fold to this please StL

Mentioned it to my parents who still live in the neighborhood and had one of the dumbest arguments I've ever had with them. They can't get over the idea that Ameren owns it so they can do what they want and they'd "rather have power station than empty buildings."delmar2debaliviere2downtown wrote:I mean these buildings were in fine shape. Buildings are only empty because Ameren owns them

That's what I told them. They still hold the line of "its their property they can do what they want."delmar2debaliviere2downtown wrote:Buildings are only empty because Ameren owns them

No offense, but they kind of seem like bootlickers...that's a very passive boomer take.StlAlex wrote: ↑6:07 AM - 25 days agoThat's what I told them. They're basically the average upper-middle class uninformed type. Very set in their ways, etc.SRQ2STL wrote:No offense, but they kind of seem like bootlickers...that's a very passive boomer take.StlAlex wrote: ↑6:07 AM - 25 days agoThat's what I told them. Actually, backtracking a bit on that... that sounded pretty mean on my part, having re-read it. Those are your parents after all... sorry!StlAlex wrote: ↑8:01 PM - 24 days agoThey're basically the average upper-middle class uninformed type. They can take it though. My dad is pretty green pilled on bike infrastructure and wears "streets for all" shirts all the time so they aren't FULL boomer.
