So by my accounts, there are only four vacancies left in the district:
1) the white, single-story vacant apartments next to the deli (formerly a video rental shop)
2) the one-story brick office next to Stan's (formerly the HVAC company)
3) the two-story brick office next to Copper Pig (signs say it's 24/7 Construction, formerly Rainieri construction)
4) the Methodist church (which isn't totally vacant, and I've heard rumblings that the Methodists might reopen)
That's pretty good considering Hampton has a vast stretch of empty retail and office space.

24/7 construction is still in the building. They don't come often. I do wonder if they are a out of city based company and needed city address to do work on a city /bps/stldc contract.

The building next to the deli is for sale for $90,000. It would need a total face lift in the front to open it up a bit.

Spoke with the founder/ceo of the firm that's moving to 5351 Murdoch. He said he has been going to Russell's for brunch and that in turn got him to notice the Macklind Days sign. Came to check that out in September, spent the whole day on macklind. Noticed the building for sale. And the rest is history.

Are they relocating from Chesterfield or will this be a 2nd office?

Drove through Macklind last weekend after not being home for a few years. Wow. What a difference in energy in this area. I know of quite a few younger 20's who have recently purchased in the surrounding streets as they believe this is the next big area in the city. Pretty exciting for South City.

I encourage forumers to re-read the first page of this thread. Stay positive on the city!

Went to Copper Pig for the 2nd time over the weekend. Really love the place. The food, drink, and atmosphere are excellent. Great addition to the neighborhood.

Not to mention Onesto just down the road... Hopefully the rehabbed space across Macklind from Russell's fills up sooner than later.

^ it will. A wealth management firm bought it and is moving its biz from chesterfield to that location. UIC is doing a $300,000 built out for them.
The firms owner bought the entire building for $420,000. Previous owner doubled his investment

Last night was the kickoff meeting for the neighborhood traffic study. CBB (the firm the city used for St Louis Hills and TGS) is conducting the study. Residents were mostly upset about speeding on Wherry, running stops, parking on Macklind (surprise), and Brannon's connections with Neosho.

I told CBB engineer it would be good to have better pedestrian connectivity between neighborhood across Kingshighway to Christy Park and southbound bike paths/GRG trails.

speeding on Wherry is an issue..

you have this half a mile airplane runway like street with no stop signs and the street is wide because nobody parks on the sides...so it gives you a sense that you are on a bigger street with bigger speed limits...i suggest they put in a bike lane on each side to tighten up the driving area..plus it would give a nice cut through for cyclists to chippewa from hampton.

as for parking- i went to the parking complainers group...my feeling was that we dont have a parking issue, we have a mentality issues that everyone thinks they have the god given right to the parking spots in front of their house. :D

Yep. And the lack of available parking is a good sign for a neighborhood. It's means people want to be there.

This was the exact sentiment expressed by the guy next to me before the breakout sessions. Something about a chair after shoveling it out is ok though. Bearded, white, hanging out with another guy who came in? Urbanstl.com forum meets real life...

This is a perennial argument in FPSE as well, though it's not really hard to find on-street parking on the residential streets, especially compared to the CWE. Have you had much success persuading people that it's not the end of the world if they have to park a few spots away from their house (or on their rear parking pad/garage)? I feel like I haven't made much headway personally.

Macklind Avenue Deli burned down last night, probably fireworks. One of the owners said they have insurance and gut instinct is to rebuild but they obviously don't know yet. Neighboring buildings had some minor damage, but the Clementine's building looked ok.

The City needs to dramatically increase fines for setting off fireworks and Police need to actually enforce it for a change. Last night I heard people shooting them off until 2 am. Fireworks are just too dangerous in an urban environment. Buildings are too close together.
