I haven't been to Mississippi Nights in a number of years. They just don't have the same level of quality since The Pageant opened. However, with any luck I'll be there to see Medeski, Martin & Wood next Tuesday.

Bastiat, please realize that Mississippi Nights is an institution. There would be a huge void in the market if it left. Then again, they were predicting it's demise within six months of The Pageant's opening. I see a show there proabbly once every 1 or 2 months.

PostNov 29, 2006#378

In the past 3-4 years, I've seen Built to Spill (three times), Drive-by Truckers (four or so times) My Morning Jacket (twice), Guided By Voices, Eels, The Strokes, Willie Nelson, The New Pornographers, Yo La Tengo, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Grandaddy, Old 97s, Of Montreal, Stephen Malkmus, Reverend Horton Heat, and plenty more I can't think of all at Mississippi Nights, since The Pageant has been open.

I was at the Drive-By Truckers concert last month. I followed them to Nashville and saw them play at Mercy Lounge in the Cannery Row or whatever that area is called. The venue was a lot cooler than Mississippi Nights. Was planning on seeing them at the Daisy in Memphis, but the rain held up and we went back to watch the Cards win the World Series.

I understand that MS is an "Institution" with a lot of memories, but it is not special (in terms of architecture or "uniqueness") enough to hold up development of that block if what is planned is better. I would not like to see it go, and I am against eminent domain, but if the developers gain it fairly and build something nice, I can't complain.

Also, isn't there going to be a concert venue in BPV planned as well?

That'll go over well. I imagine they'll have the smae people that play at the casino and Live on the Levee. Thrilling stuff.

...I had tickets to Game 3 of the World Series. As we waited on the rain delay, we drank and drank at the Westin. When it was finally called, my buddy and I hopped on the Metrolink to the Landing stopped, waded through the puddles and in the rain up to Mississippi Nights to see Drive-by Truckers that night. I was there in my red sweater, with long underwear on, a scarf with me, and a jacket. I was a little overdressed for the event. Their show that night was epic. Patterson was in rare-drinking form. Good stuff.

And then I got to go to Game 5. it was a nice stretch for me.

...and my point wasn't so much that it's a gem of a building, but that it's a gem of a booking machine. It's absence will be noticed, if something else does not pick up the slack.

I've seen a ton of shows at Miss. Nights since the Pageant opened. They still get great bands and haven't slowed down due to the Pageant like a lot of people thought they would. It will be a shame to see it go if that really happens. We need more music clubs, not less.

I'd be so upset if Mississippi Nights could not get worked into the project.

Some of the artists that have performed there:

U2, Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, Talking Heads, The Ramones, Warren Zevon, The Urge, Roxy Music, The Police, The Pogues, Phish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Henry Rollins Band, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Ween, They Might Be Giants, The Strokes, Ben Folds, Chuck Berry, Buddy Guy etc. etc.

The Pageant may get the bigger acts but this place is the perfect sized venue for that "Not big enough to play the Pageant" but "Too big to play at a small club" crowd. It gets everyone just as they are about to get big and that's what I love about it.

I will also mention that They Might Be Giants even wrote a song called "Mississippi Nights" that they played there in which the lyrics professed their preference to the place over the other STL venues.

True, but they wrote a song about every venue they played on that tour...

Can someone post a progress photo of the hotel tower? The Pinnacle webcam doesn't seem to work for me.

The hotel is on the far right, just peeking above the garage.

Today I saw two billboards for the new LUMIERE PLACE. They read something to the effect of "Downtown's newest primier destination and residentials"

Good news.

The St. Louis Cabo-Wabo was scheduled to be part of TBD and not the Pinnacle casino (per their last press release). If they are still part of TBD who know when/if they will ever open. I think Sammy is really looking forward to a St. Louis destination, but I think he needs to relocate to BPV - that would be an awesome summer destination.

Thanks for the photo, jblues. Last time I saw it it wasn't even above ground yet. I'll have to swing by and take a look.

I would see it fitting in with the BPV more too.

OK, so I looked back a few pages, but didn't go through all 31,269 posts in this thread, so direct me to the right place if I missed it... ANYWAY, what's up with the most recent rumor about Mississippi Nights closing due to the Casino? IS the rumor true this time?

..I'll also point out that they don't have any shows scheduled after the two Bottle Rockets shows on Dec 30 & 31...

Check out page 43 of 49 on this PDF. It has a model of Pinnacles plans. I doubt they are final by any means, but it gives an idea of what they want to do. Thanks to Steve Patterson for putting that up.

That's excellent - I think that anything that builds toward the river is great. There's a vast area north and south of downtown that could/should be developed. Hopefully pushing this close to the water would help spur more development.

Wow. Lotsa new jobs and an economy engine. Not to mention that the tax money is sorely needed for city budget.
