in addition ... not sure if you realized these are all state capitals too.

Indy "thriving"... ? not too sure. I was just there yesterday. It reminds me of a small city with poor infra-structure. Nice, yes - "thriving" not really.

Savannah is the capital of Georgia. Other than that, yes, the rest of them are.

Then the citizens of Atlanta are under the delusion that they live in the capital city.

I dunno. Basicly talking about big cities that have state capitals vs. "rural" state capitals and making things tough for larger cities. i.e How rural Missouri seems to have an agenda against St. Louis and this is enhance by the location of the capital in Jeff City.

Georgia has had five official state capitals: colonial Savannah, which later alternated with Augusta; then for a decade at Louisville (pronounced Lewis-ville), and from 1806 through the American Civil War, at Milledgeville. In 1868, Atlanta became the fifth capital of the state.

I was down at the Landing this weekend for some partying at Sundeckers after the Rams victory.

While I miss my old tailgating lot it is impressive to see the hotel/casino complex being built. Although it looks like the casino part will be the last part built since the hotel and parking garage are the parts being worked on.

I was also noticed how close the parking garage is to I-70. Will be an interesting urban look when complete.

It's amazing how quickly it's taking shape as well. My dad and I park near Tucker and Cole for every game and walk down Cole to the dome. He asked me yesterday, "What that hell is that?", pointing to the casino - it seemed like the last time we were at the dome, it was still obscured by the highway, but now it is very visible from the west.

^Have to agree. Walking down Cole into the dome I was impressed at the progress since my last visit (at the Blues festival, still a hole it seemed). The view east down Cole will afford a great view of the hotel tower. It is exciting to see a tangible northern extension of the skyline taking shape. Can't wait to see the finished product.

^ It really is starting to take shape... It seems they are moving quickly on this project... I am excited to see the lighting used on this building... Seeing as it will be called "light." Hopefully some more buildings DT will light up, I would like to see more color DT at night..

An interesting thought there about use of light. Along with BPV, there will probably be some very exciting opportunities. As I mentioned quite awhile back, downtown KC is doing some great stuff with public lighting.

From SLFP's website:

"Lumiere, which means "light" in French, reflects both the city's French heritage and the dramatic presence that Pinnacle's 24-story hotel tower will have along the St. Louis riverfront," stated Lee. "The tower will be illuminated from within at night with a striking arc of light, creating a new square icon in the downtown skyline."

Cincinnati does an event called "Light Up Cincinnati" in which they leave all the lights on downtown buildings for an evening. I am not sure if it is annual or not, but it's pretty cool. It makes for a great evening as thousands come downtown to take pictures, go to dinner, walk the city, take in the sights, etc...

I agree that STL should do more with lighting downtown. To echo the above comments, I hope the coming projects will start a trend of signature illumination.

I suppose I could use this post as a commentary on the plight of Native Americans, the western culture of consumption via the juxtaposition of the two in the above photo . . . but I won't.

The casino lights should be pretty.

Now can I get an 81-story bookend? :D

^ David Cross has a great bit about Light Up Atlanta in which he portrays it as a bunch of rednecks marvelling: "Look at all them buildin's lit up! Look at that one! *gasp* Look at THAT one!"

Especially during Monday Night Football or the World Series. We have a MNF game coming up in a couple of weeks. Could we at least keep the Arch lit during the game? I guess we don't light up Eads bridge anymore. Could we get buildings downtown to leave lights on for the MNF game like other cities do? The shots of the Seattle Space Needle were pretty dramatic tonight on MNF. We can do the same. It would be cool if we could get the Cardinals to light up Busch Stadium during MNF. Some city did turn on all the lights at their baseball field during MNF, but I can't remember which city.

I am not sure about this "arc of light." What the heck does that mean anyway... ?

It can't be that expensive to install a few decorative colored lights or spotlights...heck! I would even be fine with the DT buildings just leaving their top floor lights on...

Yeah, what the hell ever happened to that? I know years ago when they first lit it up (and it looked awesome!), there was an issue with the tug pilots, who said the light reflecting off the water caused them problems (or something like that). So then they installed some panels that the tug pilots could shine their spotlights on which would turn the lights off until they passed. And then at some point, they turned them off completely it seems. And now you don't hear about it anymore. So what happened?

The lights were some bluish halogen type bulbs and the city stopepd because they said it would cost 2 million to keep lighting it up/fix the lighting. That was back around 2001/2 I believe.

That's too bad - it looked awesome. I can't believe there aren't any other alternatives for lighting the bridge.

I'm pretty sure that was when the city was running a deficit and cost cutting was the name of the game (first few Slay years). Departments had to do a 5% budget rollback across the board etc. I figured it was a victim of budget woes.

We need to get Ameren to make another Civic donation.

Ameren lights up the Eads Bridge, the Arch, civil courts building and a few other "landmarks" and the state doesn't fine them for the incident at johnson shut ins last year....

I saw a band there last month and I wasn't really that impressed with the venue. I wouldn't care if this were to go if another nicer venue replaced it...
