Homeless teenager who is sleeping behind Larry's building pulled a gun in Lucas park tonight. Looked like a Colt 1911 until it was pointed in my general direction and had a red tip... turns out it was a BB gun...

After calling the cops, we heard a shot... someone else called a bit later and said that there were two homeless in the park brandishing a firearm. Cops came again and hauled them off... rumor is one of the guns was a cap gun...

When I saw that the gun had a red tip on it I and a few others started yelling at the kid telling him that it was a great way to get killed. Idiot...

These idiots can afford to get a BB gun and play "crip" and "blood" but they can't get a job. Funny thing is, by giving these punks a free bed and a free meal you give them no incentive whatsoever to better their lot.

US Senators Bond(R-MO) & McCaskill(D-MO) working proactively to keep Larry Rice from goofing the system. For all the BS that takes place in politics, it's good to see bipartisanship focused on making sure Larry & NLEC don't make a mockery of the system. I hope their efforts are both thorough and effective.

The best description of the homeless problems that NLEC does not help and, through their neglect, help support. Solid post.

Was he an NLEC client (the dolt with the BB gun)? It sounds like he was sleeping on the street, not in the shelter.

Way to go Bond! (especially the last paragraph)

...comprehensively reviewing all the relevant finances of NLEC, the track record of NLEC in assisting the homeless, the ability of the entity to manage the property, including all costs, the ability of NLEC to administer homeless programs that is effective to meet the needs of the homeless population that is expected to use the property. These are new requirements that must be implemented before a surplus Federal building can be transferred to a standalone homeless provider. If NLEC fails any of these tests, HUD and GSA should eliminate NLEC as a potential lessee or owner.

Rice has never been afraid to piss people off. In fact, he seems to get a kick out of it. Never mind that you can get more done by working with people. :?

The semissourian did some really good investigative journalism here, looks like true journalism isn't dead yet.

Ok, maybe someone who's good in math can help me here...

I'm having a bit of trouble reconciling Larry's 2007 audit filed April 2008, with his most recent court document filed July 2009.

In his 2007 "audit" he states,
QUESTION:

I’ve heard that Larry Rice and/or NLEC has $40-$50 million

in assets. Is this true?

ANSWER:

No. As reported in NLEC’s 2007 independent audit, the ministry

now has just under $5.35 million in total assets as of December 31,

2007.

Part of the discrepancy in figures here owes to the fact that this

initial $40+ million estimate – made in a 2004 document in

conjunction with NLEC attorneys – is largely outdated. This

estimated sum reflected a more positive potential market value of

NLEC media equipment and property; e.g., what all NLEC

equipment and property could have potentially sold for in 2004. In

hindsight, this estimate was likely too high to begin with, the

falling market trends in the years since notwithstanding.

And in his 2009 Federal Court filing, where he's suing the U.S. HHS (yes that one):

Section 9:

The approximate value of New Life's real estate assets and media holdings is $40-$50 million dollars.

So how did someone take 5.35million and turn it into 40-50 million in 1 year in this economy?

Anyone know which 2-acre property within I-64, Grand, I-44, and Kingshighway they own and intend to put a homeless tent encampment? Maybe the lawn around the new ambulatory care center :)

^ Oh, that would be nice. I mean, it would fit with the mission of SLU and they have the space. I may help set up the tents in that case. The images of a city evicting residents from a homeless camp is bad, video of SLU doing so would be incredible.

Just pointing out that SLU has a lot of empty land within the area that Mr. Rice says he's going to build a new tent city. My question is how would a Jesuit institution such as SLU react to a homeless camp being built in its vicinity?

^I would guess about as well as they reacted to being told they had to find a re-use for a structure they purchased that was listed on the historic register

Why would the reaction of a Jesuit institution to a homeless encampment near their campus interest you? Seriously. Do you have a particular interest in being a part of a solution for the issues surrounding homelessness?

Given your knowledge of how electronic media can sometimes distort intentions, your comment smacked more of a desire to find hypocrisy at a religious institution you have issues with. That was my take. I hope I'm overreacting.

To really ever talk tounge-in-cheek about homelessness actually points out, IMO, a lack of understanding of the seriousness of the issue. I have normally taken you as a serious person on significant issues facing this city.

"your comment smacked more of a desire to find hypocrisy at a religious institution you have issues with"

Yeah, that's kind of it. I'm serious about the city, but can't be serious all the time. I despise hypocrisy (though one not need to desire to find it - it's just there). I'm not religious, but I have no particular issue with SLU (though I certainly disagree with their land use actions). The idea that anyone who isn't very serious all the time lacks an understanding of how serious an issue is, is well, absurd. That said, I am serious about the issue of homelessness and I'd be genuinely interested in how SLU would react to a homeless campus on or near their property - where Larry Rice had indicated he will build one.

^Fair enough, but everyone is not "anyone"...I would expect a difference in the casual attitude of the marginal contributor and the super moderator when discussing important issues...Or at least some caveat back towards real solutions on the board...

To be clear what got me was "I'd help set up the tents in that case." I have no doubt this is an honest opinion, just seemed a bit cynical and unproductive coming from you...

Larry Rice is planning the tent city to be on some vacant land near the I-44 and Vandeventer intersection: New Homeless Camp to form near Missouri Botanical Garden

It's near the Botanical Gardens and about a half-block away from the new Botanical Grove development. I'm curious about the legalities here--e.g., can anyone in the city open up their land for camping? Do you need some sort of occupancy permit, or is that just for houses? It will be interesting to see how this develops.
