I wonder how this will play into everything Larry Rice and NLEC...

Side note: Not so subtle there, eh, Post-Dispatch? "Killing... something... WASHINGTON AVENUE DOWNTOWN!"

No word on whatever happened to the bag of Cheetos.

Q: If not Downtown, then where?

I have noticed a big increase in the number of homeless downtown over the past year. I'm not sure what is going on, but they seem to be in almost every alley, on every street.

I've witnessed drunken fights on the Archgrounds, of all places. Kiener Plaza has a fair share, the parks in front of Union Station are packed, they sleep behind the Mansion House on Memorial.

In years past I didn't pay much attention, but the homeless population I've noticed coming into downtown over the past year or so seem very aggressive and REALLY drunk.

I don't know what is going on, but it seems like the homeless situation is getting a little out of control. Is it just me that has noticed this or am I crazy?

Not sure about drunk, but difinitly mentally unstable. Lots of public cursing and yelling.

Old Pruitt Igeo site seems like a good spot. They can do what ever they want there, even provide funds for their tent city they wanted.

Larry won't move out. He's gotta keep homeless people "top of mind" to keep donations high.

Oh there are definitely some that are clearly unstable, but a lot of them just drink throughout the day. The alley behind my building that a lot of us use as a pass through typically has some guys sitting on the stoop and they are HAMMERED.

That's why I don't give them money, I see the ones asking for money drinking 40oz beers and leaving their cans littering the street.

Eh, I wouldn't worry about it. I mean, downtown is soon to have a park on top of the Interstate, new highway ramps and maybe even renovations to the Edward Jones Dome! I guess some people are never happy.

Has anyone looked into the rumors that Chicago is bussing homeless to STL? If this is true, what can the city do to stop it? Sue? And I wonder how many homeless are imported to the city from the rest of the metro... a LOT I would guess considering there isn't much in the way of shelters resources outside of the city. (Though Dooley has apparently promised to devote more resources...)

Maybe someone is FINALLY reading this forum and paying attention to everyone on here who cares so much about the city!

St. Louis announces plans to "Crack down" on NLEC. "Wants new life around homeless shelter"

"He also said sidewalks around the shelter, other than entries and exits for the building, would soon be barricaded "until we can get on top of this situation."

Surrounding counties absolutely do bring in homeless and drop them at NLEC doorstep. I have never heard the Chicago thing. Bussing just seems very costly, when money could be used for something helpful

^Pretty sure Ed's retired from his income-producing work, not this work that has him questioning everything posted on KMOX's website, predicting 40 years of darkness if STL doesn't follow his magical suggestions. Real nice guy, just a tad loopy.

Focus: I heard from a rather credible source some rather funny stories about Larry and his ability to keep the NLEC going amidst everyone calling him the worst things out there. But, the foundation for some of his stories involves some kind of active underworld support, from a funding source to an enforcement angle.

Background is this contact is usually very, very accurate; has high contacts in multiple communities, from social to business; is not prone to hyperbole; had a few drinks in him (en vino veritas); and expressed these thoughts with both confidence and certainty amidst a bit of fear. We were talking in a group about people actively taking on NLEC and reforming the area in the public forum, and he said that it was a horrible idea, that Larry would have his people go after you, that they've done it before, and then he kept talking about some sort of connect. He said these things confident in the validity of these words, and he also showed genuine concern, fear, and hesitancy, that people who take on Larry publicly are putting themselves in dangerous positions.

Q1: Is there any validity here, or was my contact just full of beer and bullshart?
Q2: If you can validate any of my contact's story, could you share what you've been through?

I've been reading about his charitable enterprises, and his work program sounds more like a source of low paid slave labor to keep his TV station going than an actual service. Is that accurate? If so, and if he is a corrupt dude with supposed "connections," sounds like all the more reason to take him down.

Is this a long winded way of saying you met a dude who believes Larry Rice has ties to organized crime?

^That's me not wanting to invoke a possible libel suit.

Not just met, but know well, and who I consider quite honest & reliable. He indicated that some people who have opposed Larry in the past have been silenced, sometimes by lawsuits, sometimes by other means, including violently. I'm wondering if there could be any truth to that second part.

Apparently there is a new petition to shut down Rice.

http://www.kmov.com/news/local/Downtown ... 14201.html

I seem to remember hearing about a similar effort before I moved DT. Any chance this will succeed?

^ The KMOV report lists an attorney named Elkin Kistner as the legal representative of the signators. Maybe you could write him and ask that your name be included as well.

I'm a fan of Friends of Lucas Park's efforts, and not just for the playground. Mention of NLEC in the middle of the article.

I honesty am sick of hearing about these clowns! They could honestly open up shop on the north side for half the price and no fuss. I am not convinced that Larry Rice is a true advocate of Christianity when he allows these people to pi** and sh*t in a park where people walk and children play. If he wants to make St. Louis and his "people" better he would have common sense that the good Lord gave him and focus on the root of the problem. Of course we all know that is not profitable. So I will be blunt and ask people on this thread to be proactive and help me figure out how to make Larry "shape up or ship out". This man has taken absolutely no accountability for the actions of his "colleagues" and has brought nothing but sh*t for the law abiding, tax paying, community of active citizens of St. Louis.

I took my daughter to the new Library and parked by the NLEC. I was very uncomfortable getting around the hordes of people on the street loitering. I know that sounds like some suburbanite not being used to the city but I moved from Chicago recently and I honestly never ran in to anything like this.
