"Edwards' Flamingo Bowl and Martini Bar will be on the first floor of the Lucas Lofts near Tucker Boulevard and Wash Ave., which happens to be down the street from the cozy confines of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Edwards has in mind a "retrofriendly" establishment. . . ."

How exciting! This is exactly the kind of development that I was hoping for! Something kind of funky and cool that you can't get out in the burbs. That's what urban life is all about!

I can't wait until the day that I can catch a Cards game, walk home to check on the dogs, then walk over to the Flamingo Bowl, catch a movie at the Jefferson Arms, or just have some wine over at Copia. Good times!

Pin-up is one of my favorite places to go, so Flamingo Bowl will be awesome to have down the street.

I just read on http://www.urbanreviewstl.com that this place is going to get a flashy new sign, similar to Joe Edwards projects in the loop (The Pin Up Bowl, The Pageant, the Tivoli, Blueberry Hill, etc.). The city has approved it. Excellent news!

When is this set to open? It sounds wicked cool - kind of like Ten Pin in Chicago.

Finally some news in the 11/27/06 Post Dispatch.

Sounds like the owner of the building is admitting he's an amatuer and none of the delay is Joe Edwards' fault.

Downtown Diary: Bowling dreams get time to spare

By Doug Moore

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

Monday, Nov. 27 2006

The smudge marks on the windows are from the many faces that have looked in hoping to see bowling lanes on the first floor of the Lucas Lofts Building.

After all, the sign that has hung in the front window for a year and a half

continues to promise that the Flamingo Bowl is coming in summer 2006.

As each month ticked away, the idea of bowling a few frames with friends became more exciting. Between beers two and three, watch out. The recreational bowler has his groove on. We're talking turkey. Put those bumpers pads away.

But with every dream, reality has to come around and muck it up. Such is the case with the bowling alley planned for 1123 Washington Avenue.

Six months after Joe Edwards had hoped to throw open the doors to his first venture outside the Delmar Loop, he sits idle something he is not accustomed to doing.

"I've been waiting and waiting," Edwards said. "The lease has been signed for a year and a half. I'm waiting for the building owner to turn it over to me."

The plans are in hand. So is a liquor license and approval to hang a 28-foot-tall flamingo-shaped sign that will add another neon feature to the Washington Avenue landscape. For now, the proposed bowling alley is raw space.

Developer Patrick Stanley said the project was delayed because of complicated financing, but is still very much a reality.

"There is just a ton of due diligence on it," Stanley said. "It's definitely not Joe. It's been me slowing it up, crossing every 't' and dotting every 'i.' We'll get it open by mid-April."

Edwards is renting the space from Stanley.

"I'm not used to this. I usually own the buildings I develop," Edwards said of his many properties including the Pin-Up Bowl on Delmar Boulevard, just east of Skinker Boulevard. But he liked the pitch Stanley made to open a bowling alley in the loft district.

"I just hope it happens," Edwards said.

It will, Stanley said.

A martini bar will be the main draw with eight public and four private bowling lanes.

"It's going to be absolutely spectacular," Stanley said. "Hopefully, in the springtime, we'll all be bowling some frames."

Meanwhile, the smudge marks accumulate.

Another nice neon sign could really add to the flavor of Washington Ave.

Thanks for posting this. I really was surprised at the lack of activity given the fact that Edwards was involved. Something definitely seemed fishy.

It's great that this is apparently still a go. But do you think this will really be finished by next Spring?

Is that honesty from a developer that I see?!?!?

My completely out of the air know-nothing guess would be 4th of July. Then again once it gets turned over to Joe Edwards the stuff will happen fast. I seem to remember Pin-Up Bowl getting built very quickly.

Hey dweebe, thanks for posting this. My wife mentioned the place the other day as we were driving by on our way home from Macy's. I told her I hadn't heard anything, and that I was disappointed by the lack of activity since it would've been nice to have one more fun indoor destination now that colder weather is on its way.

I should've known the delays were beyond Edwards' control. In a town where things often move too slowly, Edwards is a man of action. I can only imagine his frustration with this situation. Hopefully the building owner gets his ducks in a row and Edwards remains commited to the project, because the development (and the cool sign!) will be a huge plus for this part of downtown.

No, I really hope this still happens, because I really like the pin-up bowl and I think washington would make a great spot for it... I also think it would be cool to get a monday night loft league or something where teams from the neighborhood could meet each other and partake in some beverages!

One note, I was in Morris Fashions the other day in the CWE, they were originally supposed to go next to Masulla and Flamingo bowl, and the owner basically said that there were " problems" that caused them to move their shop.. It is a neat store, pricey but cool...

hopefully the problems stop soon and the bowling alley can get started!

I ran into a friend this weekend who works for the constuction company for that building. He doesn't think the project will get off the ground because of the building owner.

Went out last night and met some people pretty close to the project. They said that Joe Edwards owns the space now. For what it's worth, construction may start around June and finish 4-5 months after...

Had a talk with the head honcho over at Lucas, Patrick, and he said that construction is indeed slated for next month.

Asked him about the Cigar Bar and he said that he was going to open it and run it himself but instead sold it to someone else. This person is in talks to bring Gibson Guitars of Memphis to the space...

Very interesting, and I think a Gibson store would be a nice retail attraction, adding to the mix a highly recognizable bbrand with some drawing power.

Nice emoticon, BTW. =D>

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but will the Gibson store actually sell guitars? Or is this some kind of "concept" store?

Ok, only problem is that I attended the Chuck Berry concert at Blueberry Hill this week and talked with Joe Edwards, himself. He says there are still problems with the space. I only spoke with him briefly so I didn't have the opportunity to ask follow-on questions. All I'm saying is, this isn't a done deal apparently.

Washington Avenue to score bowling alley

By Joe Whittington

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

Tuesday, Jun. 19 2007

More than a year after Patrick Stanley built the Lucas Lofts, University City

Loop developer Joe Edwards is putting in the alleys — the bowling alleys, that

is.

The Flamingo Bowl will occupy most of the first floor of the building at 1117

Washington Avenue. Edwards first signed the lease two years ago, but it took

time to line up all the details.

I was wondering the same thing. If this is the right gibson, then it indeed appears to be a guitar store. Sounds like an interesting addition to downtown. The more colorful, the merrier!

I think that line from the P-D article qualifies as the understatement of the year.

And the key part is this: "The completion date of the 12-lane, 15,000-square-foot bowling facility, thought by Edwards to be the only one ever in downtown, and the featured cocktail bar will be anywhere from five months to the first quarter of 2008."
