Word of mouth is that Flamingo Bowl is advertising for a December 12th opening.
Nice article from St. Louis Magazine titled, "A Very Bowled Move": http://tinyurl.com/39ck4p
"There are a few incontrovertible facts about this city: The mercury will rise to face-melting temperatures for at least one week every summer; the Cardinals, no matter how far they may be out of the pennant race at the All-Star break, will make things interesting come September; and the Loop will always be the base of operations for Joe Edwards, that hirsute hero of good times and pop-culture tchotchkes. These things give us comfort; their predictability makes it easier to endure the unpredictability of, oh, everything else.
So that’s why we got a little nervous when word circulated a couple of years ago that Edwards had plans to open a bowling alley downtown on Washington Avenue. Did he not realize his actions’ potential for upsetting the very balance of life in St. Louis? What’s next? Anheuser-Busch decides to ditch the Clydesdales in favor of llamas?
For a while, it looked as if the universe shared our apprehension. Delays beyond Edwards’ control kept the project in the first floor of the Lucas Lofts from getting off the ground for more than a year and a half— and kept the whole thing from throwing the world as we know it into chaos. But then came word in June that the project was moving forward. (By the by, the City Museum’s 8-year-old two-headed snake died the same week, not that we would dream of blaming Joe.) And then rumors started swirling that it could be done as early as late 2007 or early 2008—and we heard the distinct sound of a tiny hole being torn in the space-time continuum.
As it turns out, there’s a very good chance Edwards’ Flamingo Bowl will be open by the first week of December."

^ Let's hope that St. Louis can produce/find/hatch a few more people like Joe Edwards (and Amy/Amrit Gill) for the next generation.

^ If someone would just give me a lot of money, I'd gladly volunteer for the job. I've had my eyes set on Meramec Street in Dutchtown for the longest time...I'd love to give the stretch between the Feasting Fox and Saint Anthony's the Joe Edwards treatment.
Good news about Flamingo Bowl- maybe if it opens early next month, I'll give it a try after the first of the year when the hype dies down a little.

I second that. I've got at least a half dozen ideas already planned out and I'm sure I could dig up some more.ThreeOneFour wrote:^ If someone would just give me a lot of money, I'd gladly volunteer for the job.

Of course, but what St. Louis needs are developers who find their own money - THAT'S the hard part.

Members of this forum should join together and create their own developments. Ay? What do ya think?

All we need is time and money. I've actually thought about trying to put together a small renovation/other project in FPSE, but it's not the bargin that it used to be. What does it take for a few people to do a small (~3-unit) project? $10K each and equity to secure a loan?
It would be interesting to see how many of the opinionated ones we could get to agree.Xing wrote: Members of this forum should join together and create their own developments. Ay? What do ya think?
Honestly, I think if some of our brains (and resources) were joined together we could conquer some amazing projects!
Warning: CMD-H is a Zombie and he works for Exxon Mobile. He's wants our brains and resources!!!!!
General entrepreneurial posts can be placed in the following thread: http://urbanstl.com/viewtopic.php?t=4917. This thread is for Flamingo Bowl.

Flamingo Bowl -- I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for this one to open! I can see myself spending many nights there perfecting my "Granny Bowling" style.

I walked by this morning at around 11:00 a.m. and workers were hoisting the blade section of the Flamingo Bowl sign into place.
^ Score! I'll take pics and post them when it's lit up. BTW, the DSLRA is hosting a holiday party here on Thurs, Dec 13th @ 7:30pm: http://dslra.org/content/view/32/1/

The sign looks to be mostly complete.
Plus they had a lane of Washinton Ave. closed off today as they had all of the pin setting machines delivered and sitting in the road during lunch.

The sign looks very cool, but it isn't the rendering of the larger sign I saw several months ago. The rendering was much taller, two stories maybe. oh well, I think this one looks great.

If it was to go two stories higher it'd be all over a few unit's windows. Not sure how ideal that would be.

Looks like the Palm Tree sign at Good Works has a companion
Right, flamingos and palm trees remind me of sunny Florida. Thoughts of this will help keep downtown denizens warm during the winter months. Kudos to those who bear tropical gifts.southcitygent wrote:Looks like the Palm Tree sign at Good Works has a companion
The neon sign is up, and I promise you it will be one of the best signs on Washington. Damn, that looks beautiful.

I really need to ask how all you architecture lovers don't think the facade of Lucas Lofts didn't just get defaced.
It is not sleek, stately, elegant, nor even original. Its a clown nose on the Mona Lisa.
If I lived in a unit adjacent to that thing I think I might sue.
The more I look out my window, the uglier it gets...I dread when they flip the switch...
Not to say I won't be there multiple times a week (if I'm inside I'll see it less than when I'm at home), but I'm pretty sure the head honcho's stash got splashed by some fermaldehyde when he OKed that one.
What works for one of your establishments does not work for another...
