If Joe Edwards' employees prepared or allowed the customer to prepare the drink as it should, it would catch on like wildfire. It's not so much the drink that provides interest, it's the ritual. Additionally, I'd think that absinthe is a good match for Edwards' bohemian persona.

"Pour 1.25 - 1.5 oz of lucid into an appropriate glass. Place a sugar cube atop a flat, perforated spoon that rests on the rim of the glass. Using the sugar and spoon are optional. Slowly drip 4-5 oz of ice cold water on top of the sugar cube (or directly into the glass), which slowly dissolves into the Absinthe. The cold water causes lucid to louche ("loosh") into an opalescent cloud as the herbal essences emerge from the Absinthe and perfume the room."

Have you opened your bottle yet, Joe?

I was in Hungary and Czech republic in October where absinthe is legal and popular. The Hungarian bartender that showed me how to make the drink put absinthe and a sugar cube in a spoon and set it on fire. As the sugar melted he dripped flaming drops of it into the cup. Inevitably the cup would catch on fire and he would routinely smother the flames with a small saucer. When the sugar was completely melted he dumped it all in, put out the fire, added a bit of water, and served it hot. Another variation on this I have seen in Spain is water poured through the sugar cube on a slotted spoon or fork (causing the "loosh"), then absinthe poured into the cube and the cube set on fire. The burning sugar then drips through the utensil into the absinthe, which has enough water in it to keep it from burning.

In other news, the Royale serves Delirium Tremens too.

World Market in Brentwood had DT as well. Man, is it good!

You can also order absinthe online easily enough (I have a couple bottles). I believe it came from England, but with the exchange rates what they are now, it's probably $120 a bottle, maybe $80+ each if you get two shipped on the same order.

I've got some of the friends coming to stay for a weekend before we leave on our spring break trip this year. If no one has gotten to it by then, I promise you will get a review after I gain consciousness at the end of the trip(a review of the flamingo's absinth that is. Thread kind of piled up on me.). You all also have me so intrigued I am going to buy some DT right now for a little taste test.

Flamingo Bowl looks great. I had a blast there last Friday night. I like it more than Pin-Up.

Mangia,Stella Blues,Rooster,Saleems,Randells, and some of the Grocery Stores sell Delirium. It has become a pretty common beer sold buy the bottle. I know Mangia and Stella Blues sell draft. Btw Stella Blues on Sundays has $2.50 premium beer specials.

I drank a lot of Delirium Tremens during last year's SLU vs. GeeDub game in the A-10 Tournament. It was the only way to kill the pain.

Well, I'm pretty sure Flamingo is trying to stick to it's 3am curfew... we heard quite the crowd down there at 2:30 last night. I was awoken by a woman screaming! we jumped to the window and saw another DT resident across the street in Vanguard had awoken to the noise. It seemed that the screem came from the loud, rowdy crowd standing outside the bowling alley. had we not seen the Vanguard resident shrug and walk away coupled with hearing that crowd, we'd probably have called the cops just to be safe.

I'm glad to see the place is doing so well. we went and had a blast ourselves. we don't live directly above the bowling alley, so we don't hear anything but street noises.

I stopped by shortly this afternoon while running some errands (renewing my passport for an upcoming European trip!) and was pleasantly surprised. While taking a gander at the bar, I noticed a bottle of Lucid and various absinthe serving accoutrements. $9 a serving, the barkeep said. No, I didn't try....yet.

Although vilified, no evidence shows absinthe to be any more dangerous or psychoactive than alcohol. http://www.substanceabusepolicy.com/content/1/1/14. It appears that Absinthe got it's bad name from French winemakers, who lost business as the sale of cheap absinthe increased in the late 1800s, and by people against alcohol abuse and public drunkenness.

In any case, it appears the US ban changed in March 2007. At least two brands, Lucid and Kübler are now being sold in the US and have supposedly started greater distribution this fall.

There's a special way to drink it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe#T ... aration.29

do you remember where you had it? At the Old Absinthe House in the French Quarter the bartender said they had none when I was there last month. She mentioned it being banned, and I had no idea the ban was lifted earlier this year.

I have no idea where it was, as it was nine years ago. I might be to find it if I went back. It was during Mardi Gras (also contributing to my lack of detailed memory as to its whereabouts) in 1999, and off of Bourbon street a bit. There was a tobaccoist next door to it that had the cleanest bathrooms I could find (and charged $2 per use), so no matter where I was in the French Quarter, when I had to move bowels, I would make the trek to this place. It was an odd crowd there, to say the least.

PostDec 27, 2007#216

It was also apparently only one of two places in the city that had it.

Walking by this afternoon, I saw a group of adults hanging out with an infant carrier, and then the front doors opened to let out several grade-school age kids with parents, and one carrying a half-eaten birthday cake. A good sign for those family-friendly concerns.

I think I might wait a few more weeks before I bring my own newborn over with some friends to witness a few frames, but I already feel more comfortable doing so.

Needed something to do with the family today so we went down to Flamingo. I guess a lot more families had the same idea. They said there was an hour and a half wait to get a lane, so we scrapped the idea for another time. Pretty sure that's a good sign.

Joe, get moving on some more projects asap!

I haven't seen anyone mention it yet, so you do know what Delirium Tremens means don't you? The DTs...

I thought DT might be an InBev beer since I've been seeing it more and more lately, but from the looks of their website, apparently not.

So is it set up like a bar in one section, and a bowling alley in another, or is the bar only a few feet from the lanes?

I thought about taking a couple friends there on New Years, but I have an infant, so thought it might be a bad idea.

Stopped by on Sunday night, at midnight the place was still packed. I hope this adds spin-off traffic to Red and the Dubliner.

The new sushi place a block down appears to be underway, by next summer ths could be more active than west of Tucker

The bar is about 10 feet from the lanes. Wouldn't be infant friendly on New Years, that's for sure. Deffinitely significant space for the bar. Also, 21 and up after 9 p.m. Don't know how that would apply to an infant either, but that's stated several places around the interior.
