It appears from Flamingo Bowl's website that they carry the best beer in the world- "Delerium Tremens." The only other bar in STL I know to carry this is Cicero's.

It's a lot more common than it was a few years ago. I know I've had it an Mangia and Llewlyns.

The best beer in the world? And St. Louis has the best drinking water.

Spaten Optimator is my favorite beer in the world. Or a Chimay Blue.

Anyway, walked by and it looks rather expensive for my taste, but still good for Downtown.

Random thought of the day: I wonder if Joe Edwards and Patrick Stanley are on speaking terms?

Must be since I saw them speaking this afternoon.

Interesting. I bet Joe wasn't smiling.

Because they are business men and professionals. It is called having good business/professional etiquette.

Dressel's first got this beer almost 3 years ago--at the time they told us that they were the first to have it in the city...

True, true, but Joe ended up taking on much more risk with Flamingo Bowl than he wanted to because of one Mr. Patrick Stanley jerking him around for no good reason. I'd be hard-pressed to do much more communication than what was absolutely necessary in that situation, especially if I had Joe's capital and influence.

Maybe Joe felt a little bad for Patrick - maybe. Development isn't an easy game and Patrick has stated publicly that all the Flamingo Bowl delays were his fault.

Went to Flamingo Bowl last night after the Ram's game and LOVED it... This is the best place on Washington now. It was very crowded, but the floorplan and high ceilings made it much more comfortable! This is my new favorite place.

I stopped by and bowled a few games yesterday. My overall experience was very good but I didn't like the lack of segregation between the bar and the alleys. As a customer, I had to check in and out next to the bar, where the smoke was hanging in the air and the attendants were blowing smoke in my face. I don’t know what crowd they’re attempting to attract or if they’re hyping the bar or the alleys but I would think a more family friendly atmosphere during the day would make sense; at least at 2pm on a Saturday. I saw a few families there but I don't know if they were visiting as a once only novelty (maybe they got lost on the way to the city museum) or if they plan to return. I know the bar is where they make their money but I would imagine most of that will come in during the evening hours. Let the bar scene rule in the evenings but inviting families in during the day would be a nice change from many of the establishments along Washington Ave.

I was down here Friday night and it was so crowded no hope of even getting a lane, and it was after midnight! Well that is an awesome problem to have in downtown, so I didn't really mind. Just wandered through and noticed it to be a very young crowd. Although I was carded as I walked in. :D I will be back in after the holiday's to try again. I agree with the person who said they should appeal to families during the day. Perhaps they could work on some City Museum/ Flamingo Bowl combo ticket or something. Or even a discount.

Nice write-up on the Flamingo in the Southwest City Journal. Alas, the writer thinks that the PinUp Bowl is in University City.

^ It's just across from Skinker. Common mistake, probably. Especially since it's an extension of the Loop. One.

So? Skinker isn't the city/county line. Common mistake.

^It's generally about a block west of Skinker/McCausland. Way back in the day, the city fathers wanted to be sure that Forest Park and River Des Peres would forever be within the city limits.

Threw some balls and got drunk at the Flamingo last night. Got there about 9 left around 2. Awesome place. The only problem is that I'm at work today and it hurts.

Re: Boundaries -- the little street across on the south side, at the end of the Thai Gai Yang building, is called "Limit Avenue" for a reason. (Interestingly, however, another discontinuous segment of Limit a block north of Delmar is actually a good block west of the city limits, which turn at a diagonal in the middle of Delmar, divide the lot at 6255 Delmar into both city and county, and then slice through a bunch of other lots and buildings until they hit Skinker at Olive.

Another weird thing is you can't go by ZIP code. The city border cuts through the DeMun neighborhood about 100 yards from Skinker. Yet the 63105 zip code goes all the way to Skinker. So you can live in the city but have a "Clayton" zip code. I think 63130 "U City" might be the same way.

At least in the Clayton/U City area any east/west city address under 62XX is in the city.

A really long time ago, I worked in the mail room at Channel 9, so I got to know Zip codes pretty well. There are many places where they don't match municipal borders -- part sof western U City are 63124 and 63132, and the western edge of the Clayton office district is 63124. Further west, one of the two 63017 (Chesterfield) Post Offices is actually in Town & Country.

As for 62XX 63XX, that's true, but around Wydown, the boundary swings west and some of the houses in the 63XX blocks are also in the city.

And let's not even get started on school districts. 8)

there is a coffee/shop bar on Main St in St Charles that carries the Delirium Tremors- cant remember the name of the place but its on a corner and used to be a mirror store i believe. Anyway, that beer srsly messed me up and I was sick all the next day with the Worst Hangover Ever. Never again!

has anyone tried the Absinthe at Flamingo Bowl? sorry if you already discussed this and I missed it- 14 pages is a lot of reading!

I was curious about this because I thought it was banned in the US. Although vilified, no evidence shows absinthe to be any more dangerous or psychoactive than alcohol. http://www.substanceabusepolicy.com/content/1/1/14. It appears that Absinthe got it's bad name from French winemakers, who lost business as the sale of cheap absinthe increased in the late 1800s, and by people against alcohol abuse and public drunkenness.

In any case, it appears the US ban changed in March 2007. At least two brands, Lucid and Kübler are now being sold in the US and have supposedly started greater distribution this fall.

There's a special way to drink it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe#T ... aration.29

Got me a bottle of Lucid for Christmas. They've got it at the Wine and Cheese Place, but it's pretty pricey -- about $60.

Here's a very good article on why absinthe was outlawed. Now if we can only get raw-milk cheeses decriminalized, I can eat and drink what I want without Big Brother butting in.
