Perception of crime won't change until people start living and criminals realize they are being watched. With people on the streets, and eyes from above, crime will drop. When the streets are vacant then criminals prey on easy targets. Crime isn't an inherent problem tied to cities. It is the result of depopulation.

Perceptions only propagate actual crime as it keeps residents away who would normally deter criminals. How often do we see criminal activity at the intersection of Maryland and Euclid? The Hill? These areas have high foot traffic and residents who have their eyes open. Criminals don't want to commit crime in areas with witnesses, or potential vigilantism.

Will everyone be watching from J. Buck's?

^ Depending on whatever's happening in the Cupples Station vicinity, I guess people will have a good view of the criminals.

Well, I thought we were back on topic! For those wanting to discuss crime, please refer to the crime-related threads on the Urban Living forum.

BTW, I'm in Springfield, Mo. now, and there is a J. Buck's here in Battlefield Mall. I haven't heard about this one before!

Hopefully they'll get the downtown location finished by August! That would be great!

Shannon's is looking to open a location down there too.

^ Yes! Mike Shannon's will be one of the main level anchors for Heer's Tower on the square in Springfield. Kevin McGowan is planning to redevelop the former Heer's department store into a boutique hotel and condos with first level retail. The last I heard, McGowan and the city are still discussing the terms as well as McGowan's desire to see the aging Park Central Square redeveloped.

I was at the Cardinals game in Springfield the other night. Southwest Missouri is definitely Cardinals country, so I think Buck's and Shannon's will do well in Springfield.

Anyway, back to St. Louis, I'm glad to hear that it won't be long before J. Buck's opens! It'll be great to have one more civilized option for pre- or post-game food and drinks in the area.

It will be nice to have more options. On the first floor of the Westin they have a bar that's only open for Cards games. The best part is that it's non-smoking. Between that place, J Bucks and Mercury there will be some good options on the west side of the stadium. I'm sooooo burnt out on Patty O's and Hraboskys.

I think he's talking about the warehouse-like bar at the southwest corner of the Westin. It's pretty bare-bones.

Yes, you're correct DeBv. Sorry I wasn't clearer.

It is an additional bar that I think can only be accessed from the outside entrance: there's no non-employee access to the hotel.

I think they call it 9th@Spruce...creative

its only open on game days for the cards and I think maybe the blues...not real sure on that one, although I know they were open for the Missouri/Illinois game.

Had lunch there today. Really great interior. Food on the otherhand was a little disappointing. It's ok--just not really good, especially for the prices. Looks like it'll be a good place to have some drinks ante- or post-game.

I've been to the bar at the Clark Street Grill a few times and I've always had good luck there.

No. Sorry I wasn't clear. I was talking about J. Buck's. It is the subject of this thread, so I didn't bother reading the posts immediately before me.

^ It's my bad, Steve.

I automatically assumed that you were talking about the other place because I didn't think J. Buck's would be open yet. 8)

Hopefully the experience will improve once they get all of the bugs worked out. I've eaten in three out of the other four J. Buck's in the area and I've always been pleased with the experience. I skipped the new location in Battlefield Mall when I was in Springfield last week just because there are plenty of great local restaurants that I like to choose from when I'm there.

We're talking here at work about hitting the new J. Bucks for happy hour. Though one of my coworkers is worried the cougars will not have found the place yet.

That's a legitimate concern. I would assume that the Clayton location is Cougar Central.

Hmmm...I can't say I've heard of that one. Like most people with taste buds, I prefer authentic Mexican to Tex-Mex, but I must confess that I dig Mexican Villa. A little of their salsa goes a long way, though.

Springfield's downtown is really taking off...there are several great restaurants that I didn't get a chance to try even though I spent a week in the area. I'm sure that's why Mike Shannon's is getting in on the action. I'm surprised J. Buck's didn't give their downtown a try, although I must admit that Battlefield Mall has finally been (nicely) renovated and it definitely draws the crowds in that area. And, their mall locations have proven successful in area suburbs like Fairview Heights and Des Peres.

Just asked my Cougar Hunter friend and he says no. His new favorite is Lesters but Cafe Eau is his favorite. Cafe Napoli, the bar at Ruth's Chris, Aqua Vin and Farattos in Chesterfield are also tops.

Though he's off his game as his recent two conquests were Pumas

BTW, wonder how that planned St. Louis location for LaBamba is coming...

They won't respond to my emails any more. I think I'll start pestering them from my girlfriend's email address.

I was there last night. They place looks great. The food was fine. basic bar food. The burger was excellent. Not too many people, but I think their "grand" opening is on Tuesday. I look forward to seeing the last three/four Cupples buildings being redeveloped. I wish they could build on that "green space" in front of the Eagleton Courthouse. what a waste of space. It completely de-energizes the area.

I guess the cougars have moved west, with the exception of Cafe Eau, which I can vouch for as well even though I haven't been there in some time. Of course, just about anywhere in Chesterfield is prime cougar territory. 8)

Yes, I was. Now that it's been mentioned, though, La Bamba rings a bell. I've been to both Springfields many times, but when I'm in the capital of the Land of Lincoln, I usually look for new places to try that city's delightful gift to haute cuisine- the horseshoe sandwich. 8)

Since this thread still centers around J. Buck's from time to time, I will say that Springfield, Ill. would probably be another good place for one outside the metro area. You have to travel a bit further north (Peoria? Bloomington?) before the Cubs fans start to equal and eventually outnumber the amount of Cardinals fans.

For the record, they have horseshoes at Sgt. Pepper's in Edwardsville.

^ I found out about the Edwardsville Sgt. Pepper's a little over a year ago while dining at one of their Springfield locations.

I talked with an employee, and she suggested that I give their Metro East location a try when I mentioned that I'm from Saint Louis. I've been a couple of times, and it's nice to have somewhere a bit closer to home when I'm jonesing for a horseshoe. 8)
