The new residential? building and retail space at 2742 Lafayette is nearing completion. The retail sign is up, and it says: "Have A Cow Cattle Company, Grub & Coffee, Urban Farm Store". The cafe/store has a large, covered, wrap-around patio. No pics yet.

Here's their site, lol: Have A Cow

I doubt it's intentional, but that website is one of the funniest damn things I've seen in a long while...

Here is an update on the Gladiator Homes in the Gate District East.   DRYWAL DAY @ Hickory Home Sites in The Gate District (facebook.com)

Also there is another builder on starting up with one home right across the street from Vaterott.    The name is Hollis Group LLC.    Don't know much about them.

Also there are two new homes being built on St. Vincent Ave in the old pool.    Looks beautiful with open windows to Eads City Park.    And another private residence on the corner of California and Lafayette nearly finished.

This looks like it was designed to go in Chesterfield Valley for something with a name like Prime House or perhaps The Grill - Steak & Seafood or Cast Iron Chop House & Wine Bar

The portion to the right of the metal panel entrance is a repurposed storefront w/ second floor apartment. Not sure what was going on with the facade of this building originally, but I suppose it's an improvement...

Sauce - Have a Cow Cattle Co. Cafe and Urban Farm Store will open in January

Have a cow.

In other words, they don't want you to not have a cow.

Any questions?

This instantly becomes the best street activated storefront in the whole neighborhood. Slam dunk IMO, can't wait to support it.

Yep.  Looks like almost every new build restaurant in the suburbs...except the land use.  Pretty decent urban form and will fill a nice empty space between some great historic buildings along Lafayette:

I like it.  I think the whole stretch of Lafayette between Jefferson and Grand has a pretty wild mix of old and new and I think this will largely fit in.  Certainly better than the suburban styled single-family home with the huge set-back down by Nebraska.

Edit:  Couple other thoughts about The Gate.  I think with continued infill it could be a really good example for what can be done to turn around some of the near-side neighborhoods that were hit fairly hard by urban-renewal.  The cul-de-sacs and dead ends have to go...and there's some housing and apartment buildings that leave a bit to be desired, and of course, getting urban and dense development around University Hospital is probably going to be an uphill battle.  But I think there's a lot of potential and a lot of the infill, especially around Lafayette, looks pretty good so far.  Park Avenue would be a good spot for some low to mid-rise apartment buildings too.

Some denser infill like these homes in Botanical Heights would be perfect for this neighborhood:

Even some of the existing infill in The Gate looks halfway decent, could be a little tighter.  Nothing can replace St. Louis' famous row homes, but this isn't a terrible start.

Some great green shoots in The Gate these days:
  • Proposed condos at 3317 Park Ave.
  • Have A Cow historic renovation at 2750 Lafayette
  • New apartments constructed across the street around 2751 Lafayette
  • Proposed renovation of 1504 S. Grand
  • Proposed townhomes on 2700 block of Hickory
  • Proposed townhomes on 3400 and 3500 blocks of Vista
  • Proposed townhomes on 3000 block of Lafayette
And adjacent to the neighborhood:
  • New SSM/SLU Hospital Building
  • Steelcote Lofts / Mill Creek Flats
  • Mackey Quarter project in Laff. Sq. - with 2200 LaSalle (128 apts) having broken ground.
  • Iron Hill Proposal
Really promising stuff. Especially for a neighborhood that flies under the radar a bit compared to some of its higher profile neighbors.

I just picked up a bag of coffee and a pastry from Have a Cow.  It’s a great space and could be a catalyst for more development in that strip.

do customers get to select a hog and watch it get bludgeoned to death in the parking lot while it writhes and squeals in agony? like picking a lobster out of the tank at a fancy restaurant? that would be super kitsch.
