Were the new townhouses (#3) built on a vacant lot?

Yeah, I'm really surprised that building in #4-5 hasn't been rehabbed yet. Hopefully someone will take on this challenge before the building gets any worse. Sales in GS do seem to be picking up - maybe this will spur development east of Vandeventer.

It's amazing how removing the facade from the Centrex building really improves the feel of this neighborhood. I think some new brick low/mid-rises would do wonders for this neighborhood...

Thanks for the pics. Tons of opportunity in this area. It is just a matter of time.

I seem to remember a small, narrow warehouse-type building on the lot in pic #3 - nothing special.

Last night I watched a special on PBS that was about the rise and fall of Gaslight Square, it was very sad, because there was so much going on in that great hood. It could have been a beacon of light in the city for decades. Imagine if that district was still there today...

Granted, those people wouldn't be living there, but man it looked like fun.

I think that's on PBS every few weeks or so, but I still haven't seen it.

Go to Channel 9's website, and look for the GS segment on "Living St. Louis". Not sure if its on there, but they always say you can watch past episodes on their site. It's a full half hour, so it may take a while.

I checked-out Gaslight Square when I was in STL recently. I had an awful time trying to get into the place because of those barricades. "Can't get there from here."

The one-way streets make the barricades even more of a hassle. Has anyone heard anything new re: moving the barricades?

not a thing, zezuz. very frustrated. i think the alderman and city streets department just need to take action and implement a plan.

i think though the 4100 block is going to put up our own barricades soon though to prevent people from other blocks from driving on our street too! we just dont like traffic, noise or anything that disrupts our happy little lives. better yet, maybe well just all move to a cul-de-sac in the burbs. (please sense my sarcasm)

I say move the barricades ourselves - pool a little $$, rent a truck/forklift/whatever. Anyone willing to bet how long it would take for the city to move them back to the middle of the streets?

Let's see:

week 1 - no one really notices

week 2 - see week 1

week 6 - "hey, where'd those thingies go?"

week 8 - "maybe we should put them back"

week 12 - community group voices desire to have a meeting about the subject

week 16 - community group reiterates its desire to have a meeting

week 17 - discussion about having a discussion breaks down as each faction seeks a coffee shop meeting locale that is seen as favorable to their residential block

week 20 - no one really notices

It's true. I'm sure you would hear their dying screams for blocks.

We should take another poll once a few more people move in to the Gaslight Condos. The alderman did say that the city would remove the barriers altogether if > 50% of the 4200 block voted to do so (which, IMO, is much better than relocating them to Sarah).

I have a couple good friends in the St. Louis City Police Department. I'm sure they could just happen to park their squad cars right next to your project while you guys use the forklifts to make it look like a city sanctioned job

Someone I know just moved into a townhouse in Gaslight Square. It's a very nice place and has a lot of room. Very cool area.

Outstanding work. One question: do we have to wear diapers while moving the barracades?
