Oh, your work must be blocking the pictures, because that's not possible with either of the mugshots I'm seeing.

I just got a tip on the RFT's upcoming cover story regarding this case. It is going to be entitled:

"High Profile Murder by Female Couple Leaves Local Lesbian Community Licking Its Wounds"

Hey look it includes parts of the Loft District!

That list is crap but how ironic that Abe Lincolns home just barely missed making the list.

Can I get one started?

I would understand picking somewhere in North City, but Downtown West (or is it just Downtown)?

There's also 2 in KC and like 4 in Chicago. #2 most dangerous is in Chicago.

I don't understand how the area around Scottrade is more dangerous than some areas in the north part of the city. I'm not trying to diss North City, but isn't it generally considered the more dangerous side of town?

That looks like some statistical cherrypicking, but I decided I couldn't be bothered to back up that assumption when I saw that Springfield, Ill. made the list.

Sure, Springfield has some bad neighborhoods and pockets of high crime like most places, but who (with the possible exception of former Governor Rod Blagojevich, although he really didn't spend much time there) could say they ever feared for their lives in that city with a straight face?

Hey, at least St. Louis doesn't have multiple neighborhoods on the list, like Memphis, Kansas City, and Chicago. I know, Central, we'll have to try harder next year.

^ It's very, very hard (impossible) for me to believe that one has a 1 in 4 chance of being the victim of a violent crime in any part of Cincinnati. After reading the report's "methodology" one can see how misleading and uninformative the report is. Please feel free to add anything that I'm missing.

Hopefully you can all follow this:

The report takes the number of violent crimes reported in a neighborhood and divides that number by the number of residents in the neighborhood. Sounds straightforward, right?

Problem #1: We don't know if a crime was perpetrated against a neighborhood resident. If someone from South St. Louis is walking through the Central West End and is mugged that does not result in an increased probability of a resident being the victim on a violent crime. This could especially be a problem if a neighborhood has few residents, but an active night scene.

Problem #2: We also know that some people because of their own habits (drinking until 3am) or associations (acquaintances with criminal records) or own criminal history are more likely to be the victim of a violent crime. What we don't know is how many residents had multiple violent crimes perpetrated against them.

From the website:
The rating is based on the predicted number of violent crimes in the neighborhood per 1,000 population of the neighborhood.

NeighborhoodScout reveals and maps the neighborhoods, and reports the predicted number of violent crimes, property crimes, the violent crime rate per 1,000, the property crime rate per 1,000, the density of crimes per square mile, and a neighborhood resident’s chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime, or a property crime, if living in the neighborhood for a year.

I inadvertently went jogging through Cincinnati's Over the Rhine (the #1 neighborhood) on my trip there last month.

Aside from getting yelled at by a few people, I made it out without a scratch. Guess I was one of the lucky ones.

I feel your (near) pain DeB. The last time I was in Cincinnati I checked out Findlay Market http://www.findlaymarket.org/ and while the market was fantastic it gives me goosebumps to think just how close I was to death!

My friend, an over 40 year old petite female was attacked today behind Lucas Park Grill on St. Charles this morning. She fought back and the perp was caught thanks to a CID guide and Lucas Park Grille employee who followed this ahole. The mugger ducked into a building, changed clothes, and walked back out on the street where district 4 collected his ass. Only by the due diligence of the CID guide and LPG employee who chased this punk was he caught. Kudos to the CID and the LPG employee.

Crime can happen at any time, at any place. Don't be naive and think that you're "safe". The criminals hang out and use the homeless population that permeate downtown. They blend in and hide and use the homeless as camouflage.

She's ok, she's not a victim, and she fought back against a hardened criminal who just got out of prison after 6 years. But we are all REALLY REALLY pissed down here. I want to send him a care package in prison of lipstick, Kotex, and mascara because he's gonna need it. Imagine the story he can tell when a small woman caught his ass and tossed it into prison. Yeah tough guy, I hope you enjoy your time.

The message needs to get out that this is a neighborhood, and we look out for our own.

We are not afraid and we won't put up with this crap.

Is there a downtown neighborhood watch? I think it would be neat to organize a 'walk against crime' and invite all of the downtown residents and workers to walk against crime downtown.

but there doesn't seem to be enough. A few pop up as serving more than one ward and there only seems to be 1-2 per ward.

You can probably call them to find out more about any neighborhood watch organizations.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/18 ... hills_man/

A Beverly Hills, California man is suing Apple, the St. Louis Police Department, the FBI, an auto mechanic, and others for aiding and abetting the Italian Mafia's attempt to force him to become a New York fashion model.

Plaintiff George McKenna filed a painstakingly detailed 124-page pro se complaint with the US District Court of the Eastern District of Missouri contending that his troubles began when "three members of the alleged Italian Mafia proceeded to threaten to murder Plaintiff at a nightclub called Velvet located in St. Louis, Missouri."

The nefarious Mafiosi, it seemed, made McKenna an offer he couldn't refuse in their plot to force him to continue working as a fashion model at a New York agency called Bossmodels.

"We're going to kill you if you don't model for us in New York," the bad guys allegedly threatened the refusenik Brüno.

A few weeks later, when the Mafia appeared at his home, McKenna - as would any right-minded citizen - called the St. Louis Police Department. And that's when things got weird.

A neighborhood watch won't do anything without the support of the police department. Yesterday, we received little to no support from District 4. Some brainiac at City Hall decided to give a food permit to a church to do a public feeding in Lucas Park. So they setup shop and somewhere around 60-70 people came (some of them were definately NOT homeless). We had drug deals, liquor, screaming, etc. Calling the cops FOUR times did nothing. It was when a bum threatened us did the cops finally show up... and "talked" to the people. Nothing was done. The sergeant in charge said, "There was nothing that we can do as they have a food permit".

They also setup amplifiers, electric guitars, drums, to do a soiree for the homeless. The church stated that "they're a non-profit" so they didn't need to get a permit.

WHAT?! Have people lost their freaking mind? Let's feed and entertain the homeless?

The Park Ranger told us that we should "come to the table with the homeless leadership" to "work something out".

Homeless leadership? Seriously? Their "homeless leadership" was too busy urinating on the library wall to come to any table.

So we got a nice big FU from the city, I guess if you're a church or homeless you can get away with just about damn near anything you want. If you hide out in the homeless community, like many of these criminals do, then you TOO can get away with just about damn near anything.

Well screw that. What would have happened if they tried this over at Citygarden? Or Lafayette Park? and 60-70 homeless show up?

The cops were probably bound by the permit so harassing them won't work, but get the name of whoever issued the permit, name the church involved and harass them. Go after the people responsible. One thing you can count on about city employees is they don't want to be held responsible, so make them.

Has anyone noticed a 'significant' or 'unusual upswing in crime in your typically safe and stable southside neighborhood. I live in the Lindenwood Park neighborhood and I know of 3 burglaries in the last month or so. One of which was one house down from me last week. My sister mentioned that an armed robbery occurred last week at Tamm and Lloyd in Dogtown, right by her home. Maybe I am just jumping the gun because these crimes have hit close to home. Is it just me or is crime reaching it's summer peak? A peak that seems to be worse than most years, maybe due to the poor economy?
