^Details are sketchy at this point. My sister, who lives in the area, told me briefly that an armed robbery, possible carjacking occurred right at Tamm and Lloyd in D-town. She saw the Police Helicopter out that morning at 1:30 or so. I am working on the details. It happened Thursday night, if I am not mistaken. I put message into my cop buddy who lives on Tamm. I am waiting for him to call me back and fill in the blanks. This is bad news no matter how this went down.
I've heard of a few more incidents of theft than normal in northhampton. Last week a couple cars got broken into on my block. Last month several lawnmowers were stolen out of garages that were left unlocked over night. A guy was arrested for that and that problem seems to have stopped for now. Haven't heard about any armed robberies or home break ins in my hood recently.

According to the police officer I talked to after to burglary on my street, he said that they caught a man who was posing as an alarm salesman. His scheme was to knock on your front door and enter from the back, if nobody answered the door. He hit 2 houses on my street. This was a month ago. The burglary last week, obviously was not the fake alarm salesman. That is why it seems so widespread. This guy hit my neighbor at 5:30 in the afternoon. Threw a brick through her rear bedroom window. As she entered the house, she saw him moving in there and bolted. By the time the police came he ran out and was gone. He got her laptop and flatscreen. A neighbor saw the getaway car, the guy carrying a TV, but didn't think much of it, looked the other way. Couldn't remember much. Typical!
The Southside is getting hit very hard with burglary, according to stlcoptalk.

It's not just the city. Apparently Oakville has seen a rash of car break-ins and both Florissant and St. Charles (yes, St. Charles!) cops have killed thieves in the past few days.

Last night three cops (each with their own car) and a paddy wagon all parked in front of my house and arrested a man. I don't know why he was arrested, but everything seemed very civil; no shouting, no physicality. In the meantime, (I was listening out the window to the police radio) some other cops breathlessly called in that they had shots fired at Winnebago and Minnesota and that they were in pursuit of the getaway car northbound on Minnesota crossing over Arsenal. In other words, the getaway car was headed toward the group of cops in front of my house and would be in the area momentarily...none of them moved. While I know they needed to get the guy they had already cuffed off the street for some reason, it seems that one or two of them would have jumped in their cars and hauled ass to try and intercept the car that had just done a drive by and was heading right for them. Very strange and disappointing. Oh yeah, this was all in my otherwise peaceful southside neighborhood.

Perhaps if the homeowners had an alarm system this would have deterred the break-ins. I know alarms won't stop everyone but it might help. In the 20 plus years I have lived in the city I have only had one small issue. I believe that’s because I try to be on the defensive when it comes to crime. My cars are not high end. I keep all valuables out of site and I have had burglar alarms on my homes. I go to bed at a decent time and not roam the neighborhood during ungodly hours. I treat the police with respect and the people I socialize with are not drug using, alcohol indulging degenerates. Last Thursday afternoon there was a stabbing in the street a couple of blocks from me. I have observed the people involved numerous times sitting on their front porch acting in such a manner that it did not surprise me such an incident happened to them.

^ I would have to think that most people with common sense live by the those rules anyway. Sometimes random things happen and there is nothing you can do about it. Criminals can be persistant and ruthless, not always dumb.

The only thing I don't have in common with southcitygent is an alarm system, and my cars got broken in to 3 times in a 3 month period on Kraft Street (Dogtown). And my door was kicked in the first weekend I lived there when I was out of town.
No troubles in the new house yet, knock on wood.

I believe most insurance companies give you a discount if you have an alarm system installed in your home. If you don't have one, maybe you can purchase one of those signs a put it in your front yard....It would certainly deter me...

Regarding the alarm salesman scam, it is happening in the Tower Grove East area. This time, it is two men in white polos with the G.E. logo. They ask for information about your alarm system, then they cut your electric later and try to break in undetected. Not sure if they have been caught yet. According to our listserve, the only local G.E. dealer does not have door-to-door salespeople.

Just a quick reminder to my friends and neighbors that TGS and GOH are still dangerous places and you need to be aware of your surroundings.
Last night there was a rash of hold up's at gun point in the neighborhood by a group of young african american males in a black late model Chrysler sedan.
I know personally of 2 events last night, one on the 3900 block of Wyoming and the 3700 block of Humphrey. Police were called and helicopters were dispatched - but to my knowledge the group has not been caught.
My good friends were held up on Humphrey around 11PM as they carried their 2 year old child from the car (parked in front of their home) to their front door. The black car in question passed them and pulled over a few door down, 2 males exited the car and approached, brandishing a gun.
Cash and wallets can be replaced, people can not.
We live in the city and this is par for the course - but its good to remember that there are bad elements still in this great neighborhood - awareness has to be on everyones mind.
It's shameful the kinds of people we have to live with. Just shameful.

Some residents may disagree that TGS is a dangerous place.

That's fine, most of the time I feel safe here.
However, if you think that TGS is not dangerous (several murders in the last 2 years, gangs, drug dealing, abandoned homes), I wonder what you think dangerous is?
In any event, I'll pass along your thoughts to my friends who had a gun shoved in their face in front of a 2 year old last night.

I posted this in the other topic created about these hold ups, but it's more appropriate here:
St. Louis needs many, many more people to walk the streets. I know it's cliche by now, but Jane Jacobs' eyes on the street theory is so intrumental here. St. Louisans need to tough it out and walk their streets to take control over them.
Developing a pedestrian culture won't be easy in a city so well built for cars (and one whose transit service has been cut so gratuitously from its heyday). Yet Tower Grove South would be an excellent demonstration neighborhood for improving the pedestrian experience in St. Louis.
One way to reduce these incidents would be for a neighborhood organization or other group to hold a series of "walking" events throughout the neighborhood.
These include pub crawls, house and garden tours, history or architecture tours that are regularly scheduled, etc.
Forest Park Southeast has developed a walking path that would be an excellent idea to emulate in Tower Grove South. Just by placing signage around the neighborhood and indicating mile markers, residents are encouraged to use the route and therefore increase the safety on the selected route (if it's actually used--this might require regular programming at first before people feel perfectly safe).
The newly minted Dutchtown West Neighborhood Association actually did a walk-through of their entire area to search for problem properties, nuisance violations, etc. They then reported these to the city. Both the act of walking the neighborhood to scout out these problems and reporting them is a good way to show would-be criminals that there are eyes and feet on the streets and that these people are in charge.
A New Orleans nonprofit named Silence is Violence sponsors neighborhood walks whose purpose is simply to meander around the neighborhood and demonstrate that people are vigilant and care about their neighborhoods.
The only way to take back the sidewalks of St. Louis is to walk them...all the time. Ditch the cars whenever possible and encourage others to do the same. It will become contagious.

scary. these little subhumans who do this will probably drive families like this right out of the city and ruin it like they did other parts of the city.

I'm not saying bad things don't happen, I just mean that there are probably a lot of TGS residents who wouldn't classify their neighborhood as dangerous.
What was going on last night at Tucker and Washington? There were about 30 cop cars and offficers on foot scouring the neighborhood.

What time? I was home all evening and saw nothing.
I believe it was 2:30 am. I'm surprised you didn't see/hear the commotion. It was quite a scene. I didn't want to give false information, but was told by a passerby that someone had their throat slit????

From www.slmpd.org safe city map on 7/25 around 3am there were reports of fights at 1400 Washington, 900 block of Locust, 10th street and Washington. and a holdup at 1100 block of Lucas (all around the same time).
From around 2:45am to about 3:15am.
I don't know if 7/26 has been uploaded to the database yet.
