I feel like theres no hope for the city when it comes to crime. It's like all the cards stacked against it. Where's the leadership in this city? Why isn't the mayor vocal about the crime here?He needs to reaffirm residents that he'll all he can to extinguish this spell of bad misfortunes. Sadly we're stuck with the label of being one of the most dangerous cities in the country and in world and the people going out doing all the dirty are relishing that. If i were the mayor i vow to fight back to get my city back
I think the mayor need to say something but I feel there is hope when it comes to all crime except homicide that would take more cops and out of city forces.St.Louis1764 wrote:I feel like theres no hope for the city when it comes to crime. stuff the city can do is go after problem properties and slum lords. Hire more cops, have town halls to get residential advice, and judges need to trow the book at criminals even if they just piss in the ally. There is hope agance crime if the leadership wants to declare war on crime.

This is my perspective on all of what has unraveled here. I feel like choice people have made this a race issue white cops against blacks when clearly this is about cops trying to do there jobs and people not like the results. Yes i do believe there are bad cops however what i've seen of the cases here in St.Louis were justified. Why question a cops work when you aren't out trying to combat crime that has plagued this city for over 60 years of its declination? Instead of trying to promote good behavior the protesters have promoted bad behavior. I'm all for new gun policies within the city of St.Louis cause its very clear this city is on a verge of a war between cops and citizens particularly the black community here. If people are going to be dumb enough to brandish a gun in front of someone anyone let alone a cop what do you think the reaction is going to be? I also feel cops have been put in a no win situation while these protesters have become the biggest hypocrites in the country they aren't doing any justice by doing what they are doing. It's not very hard to follow the laws of the country. The disturbing part about all of this is the lack of acknowledgement to promote diversity throughout these protest. I firmly believe all lives matter not just black lives. While these people decide to designate St.Louis as the next grand theft auto and completely destroying what little history we have left to savor. We really need to save this city because without St.Louis we all would never be here. The real focus needs to be on citizens respecting the cops and cops respecting the citizens however you don't demand respect you give it and it will come to you. Making St.Louis a top 5 safest city needs to be one of the top priorities along with top 5 education along with aggressive job growth in the cit needs to be prioritize . Our Downtown should never be the seen of gun shot victims burned victims stabbed victims etc. If we are ever going to grow it starts with a clean safe vibrant inviting downtown of diverse people and jobs.

4 shot at the horrible 7-11 at Pine and 17th: 1 dead and 3 wounded.

That area needs to be secured from 18th to 15th and Olive to Pine. Private security at the 7-11 and more patrols.
That's the 3rd incident since the beginning Oct.
That's the 3rd incident since the beginning Oct.
That stretch of Olive has a constant crowd of people hanging out on the sidewalks all day every day (plus the capitalists who serve their needs). It's at least 10x as many people as I've ever seen hanging out outside NLEC.
You can't even walk down the sidewalk easily.

That is 31% MORE murders than 2013 and 40% more than 2011 and 2012. With 3 more days to go... I think there is little doubt we will be #1 most dangerous city when the release the rankings early next year.
I know we are adding more police officers in 2015... but that wont help. We should have invested money to try and solve this problem... like providing full time day care for ONE CHILD to low income families. There. That is my solution. It solves the problem of single moms trying to find care while they work and incentives to have no more than 1 child.

Had drinks with family at Cafe Natasha's on south grand. An owner, and older Persian man, came over to recommend drinks/ask how we'd heard about them and share general holiday small talk.
He asked if we were locals and if we liked it (all but one of us from south city, and all like it). He then mentioned he needed to "get out before [he] gets beat up."
I don't know if it was driven by protests in Shaw (they had had boarded up windows) or immigrant violence, but man it about broke my heart.

Thats sad (and scary). Did you ask him why he thinks he'll be beat up?deformative wrote: He then mentioned he needed to "get out before [he] gets beat up."

Car load of men open fire on CONSTRUCTION WORKERS near Lumiere. One subcontractor pulls out of the job.
Do you think it was radical anti parking garage urbanists or just the usual?

And here's your first "cars broken into at IKEA" headline.

Sounds like trash that knows its getting gentrified the ***** out of town. Bring it on.

^ gentrified out by a parking lot?
i think it's more likely that somebody on the construction site was involved with the shooters in some fashion.

The number of homicides in the second half of the year was completely depressing as we wound up with 100+ homicides... that's more than some peer cities with similar poverty rates will have had for the entire year. Truly shameful.

KC might have lowest homicide rate in ~50 years. Looks like all the KC and Chicago murders moved to north STL. I kid I kid. . .well a little

http://www.ksdk.com/story/news/crime/20 ... /21104893/
The way to stop it is to keep the gentrification going. If you see an empty property, buy it and rehab it. If you see something suspicious, say something. If someone is going to trial for a crime that occurred in your neighborhood, write to the court about neighborhood impact. If someone is running for office and they are part of the old boy club in STL, get rid of them and replace them with someone that wasn't born here and doesn't care how things have been done. If you see trash on the sidewalk, pick it up. If there are weeds, pull them. If you own a building with bricked in windows, open them. If you can spend money in the city limits, do.
Well, to start I think we could refrain from using emotionally charged terms like "crazed thugs" and actually try to figure out what's behind the homicides. I don't buy the whole "Ferguson effect" thing for a second--as the article notes, homicides were already up 47% by the end of April and 20% through August.
To me it seems pretty clear that there's been some kind of gang war(s) in/around the four neighborhoods the article mentions. Check out the density of killings in Wells-Goodfellow, the Kingsways, and the northern part of Fountain Park--it's practically a battlefield.
The local media seems to have no handle on (or interest in) the dynamics of gangs and drug trafficking in these neighborhoods. It's not enough to say "most homicides involve young black males who are into criminal stuff anyway" (implication being, don't worry it won't happen to you) The numbers are unacceptable regardless of who the victims are.
We need a deeper analysis of the patterns of killing, of the amount (and sources) of drugs flowing into STL, of the gang activity in the city, etc.
^^And about gentrification... I'm not sure that would fix the problem so much as relocate it. If you mean a kind of gentrification that includes and benefits the poor/working class instead of pushing them out, then I'd be inclined to agree.

^ I agree we need to have a better handle on what's exactly going on.... and it would help if the mayor and chief stop making excuses.
Across the Midwest, the numbers are all over the place for the year, btw: down in Detroit, Chicago and Cincinnati but up in Cleveland and Indianapolis; way down in Kansas City but way up in Pittsburgh. I'm not sure if there is any rhyme or reason in there or not and it is difficult to look at just one year for solid answers, but it is just unfortunate that we have the highest rates of all and again in some instances far outpace peer cities.

If the city were what it COULD be and SHOULD be at the present then I could live with the "murder rate" quite honestly and I would probably never mention it. But since the city is NOT what it should be, for me, the "murder rate" often ends up the figurehead for everything that is wrong- the decay, the occasional ugliness, the emptiness, the missed opportunities over the years, terrible schools, crime, bad public decisions, poor leadership and just decline in general.
Because this place COULD have been Great. It was built to be Great. But it's not. It's just okay. And we basically destroyed it less than 75 years (a blink of the eye for other similarly built European cities).
I actually think that optimism is on the way. When Spring arrives I think there will be a burst of enthusiasm and people will very much be looking to put a bad 2014 behind them and move on and do the right things and not wallow in sh*t and stupidity.
Happy New Year!

Just thinking out loud here. So I was at a NYE get-together in Tower Grove South last night, and coming out of the party at about 2AM to head home, there's a creepy-looking SUV rolling down the street with tinted windows and NO license plates, which subsequently pulls over for some curb-side dealings with a woman on the sidewalk. (Oh, and as an aside we heard a couple of gunshots earlier in the evening coming from somewhere between Juniata and the park. Maybe they were just celebratory gun shots. Who knows.) Anyway, I don't live in St. Louis at the moment, but every time I come into town I see one or two vehicles roaming around without any license plates. Now I'm not saying that everyone who drives without license plates is necessarily up to no good, but I suspect that a fair number of them probably are. Does anyone else see this on a regular basis? I feel like there needs to be some kind of automated system to alert the police to this sort of thing, like traffic light cameras that can analyze images to detect whether or not a car has license plates and alert the police if necessary. Anyway, like I said, just thinking out loud.
