Just hang out of a nice Sunday night when all the sportbike rider clowns show up along with all their friends. They use White Castle as a rally point. It's gotten so bad they have to tape off the parking lot and leave a narrow lane just to enter and exit one way for the drive-thru. Or I've seen fights and similar activity go down at White Castle while trying to have a drink and listen to some music while on the patio at BOB.TheNewSaintLouis wrote:I saw this on Fox2 early this morning!
That area seems to have several shootings a year near the Oyster bar. I don't think that White Castle nor any other places had anything to do with the shooting. These were simply innocent citizens caught in the reins of senseless shootout for no reason.
This is stuff that will hold back our downtown if we don't fix it immediately.
White Castle isn't the problem it's the people & their bad choice of behavior..

Ksdk reported that the altercation and shots came from the White Castle. It's on video. The chief said 50k people are downtown every night and crime is down significantly (double digit) over last year and is still very safe.

The weekend crime recap on the news this morning just went on and on and on. Some highlights.
- multiple murders
- the first of I've heard of a specific Ballpark Village group robbery
- a rolling gun battle on Washington Avenue
- someone used the lightly traveled new Stan Musial Bridge as a quick getaway route!
Good to know that armed criminals are getting some use out of the cities newest investments I guess.

It is being reported on the news that several car cwindows were shot out on Washington.

Downtown is definitely safer, but with increased activity comes increased crime. Anybody who has ever watched the news in a bigger market like Chicago, Dallas, New York, Atlanta etc. can attest that half of their news feed is about crazy crimes. The only difference is in cities like Chicago, San Francisco, New York there is a zero tolerance policy with guns, if you get caught with an illegal weapon or commit a violent crime in most of these cities, you are done. It also seems like these cities have better police protection and cops are not fearful of stopping and frisking people that are clearly up to no good. I mean come on a group of more than a couple dudes walking down the street, harassing women, and cursing people out spells danger. In cities like New York, you don't get this kind of goon behavior in their premier areas. It also makes me more of a fan of tolls. No speeding into New Jersey at high speeds for New York criminals, there are toll booths between state lines. One has to believe that we would get way less crime in downtown and the city in general if there was a toll to get into the city from East St. Louis.

I don't think this was a so called rolling gun battle down Washington. Shots fired at the vehicle and the driver stopped heading Northbound on Tucker at Locust. KMOV loves to throw out false headlines to attract readers.
Fox 2 around dinnertime is 75% crime and corruption stories. Elliot Davis is an absolutely horrible journalist, but a great entertainer. It's rather easy to make people look like crooks when you don't let them answer questions and then cut things totally out of context in order to get a gotcha moment when you have no journalistic standards.

So i know people blame the media for blowing things out of propostion but this summer has had a few many incidents close to washington ave or the CBD. I know every city has their issues also but other than the isolated incident arent those crimes isolated to the more run down areas? With only the occasional ecception. (Not talking about petty thefts here)
Starting around Mid May there have been several shootings around Wash ave/downtown, Shooting at cheauteau, stabbing at Library, man hit with stray bullet at BOB, etc. Thats like the last month and a half. Doesnt that seem a little more than recent years? Especially in the areas they are trying to either rebuild or have rebuilt? Maybe im just paying more attention now.
Do these kind of issues happen as often in other downtowns "Nicer/Entertainment areas"?

^ I would say that there have been more incidents in recent weeks than normal, but you'd have to go back to PD statistics to see how they compare to past beginning of Summers.... certainly if this past weekend's incidents (not just downtown but across the city) become a new normal that would be a serious concern.
The question of how many violent crimes a downtown has is a good one and I think one that is more apples to apples in comparison w/ other cities than coming up with "Most Dangerous City" type lists. On the whole, I wouldn't necessarily say that our downtown has a greater number of serious incidents compared to others.... any downtown area that has its share of late night activity is going to have its share of unfortunate incidents. But the good news is that while there is a certain truth to the adage that "nothing good happens after midnight," serious non-domestic incidents are relatively rare.
edit: through May there has been a slight uptick in year-to-date combined crimes against persons (homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault) downtown proper compared to last year. 2013 saw a significant drop from 2012.

Crime goes is heavy doses here at a time.
It's embarrassing & anger some. The city can't make a lot of good progressive if crime is still out of control.
Do you think it will take arresting the folks who were gun shot victims or victims in general to come out against those who commit these crimes.
They are equally as responsible for the crimes that happen accept for the innocent by standers such as the case @ the BOB.
Although the city says it's made strides in reducing crime i want to see homicides cut in half that should be a big effort to stride for specially if they want to be attractive to millennials in such.
Statistics are statistics until the city begins to address many of it's ever lasting problems or evil empires things will be what they are.
A crumbling tumbling city with no way how to progress on the many positives that had happened.
Seems those positives & momentums have gradually eroded away by a lot of negative stigma.

It would be interesting to somehow compile crime statistics by time of day, and then even further time of day per district. Wouldn't necessarily do anything to improve crime, but it would be interesting to look at. It's probably out there somewhere already.roger wyoming II wrote: But the good news is that while there is a certain truth to the adage that "nothing good happens after midnight,"....

seems like checkpoints/tolls/cameras on the bridges would curtail some of the crime downtown. it's pretty common to read/hear that the perps made a break for the east bank. pop-up bollards at either end could be triggered by law enforcement officials stationed at the midpoint of each bridge.

A problem with downtown is ESL is across the river ESL dose not have enough to police it's self let alone help stop people from doing crime over the bridges. IF you had not notice when crimes happen downtown from people from ESL the city police are the ones that have to go over the bridges and try to find the criminals with little help from the other side.

KSDK said police have made arrests in the Broadway Oyster Bar and Wash Ave. shooting incidents.... the Wash Ave. arrest was of a dude out of AZ who may be involved in a drug cartel.
I wonder how much crime would be reduced if minor drugs were non-criminalized and cell phone companies put a lock on devices (which I think may be happening).

^^ i also feel like the state of IL is criminally negligent in its disregard for E STL crime.

It's so easy to pop over to a south stl hood from East St. Louis, do a crime and hop back on either 55 or 44. It's almost like a perfect quick escape route. Every carload of people in a car with temp IL plates that I've seen in my hood looks like a crime in progress.
People who don't look at the facts about crime in St. louis and tackle the issue head-on remind me of climate deniers.

And they charged another person with the gun battle in May down Market.
Now here is the question. How do we as citizens ensure they go to trial a serve a severe penalty if found guilty?

Are these Illinois temp plates the same as temp plates in Missouri?
Crime from E.St.Louis has been going on for as long as both have existed.
Let's face it E.St.Louis is a bombed out eyesore practically for all people to see theres no reason for its future existence.
I say plow it down & give it back to mother earth she knows whats best for the land & whats left of it shouldn't even be there. Make it a extension of Cahokia Mounds which may become a National Park.

Charges files against a suspect in the weekend's late-night downtown robbery spree.... you guessed it, East Saint Louis resident. There is suspicion that these guys are responsible for a large number of crimes so hopefully things will quiet down.
The guy in the most recent arrest from the May gun battle incident ^^ was from Saint Louis County and then there is the dude arrested for last weekend's gun battle incident from AZ.
