Oh I don't think you're really alone in that BrickCity. I don't FEAR crime but that doesn't mean I'm not aware of the possibility of it happening to me.

For example, I've staved off putting a passcode on my iPhone for the longest time. Just felt like it wasn't worth the hassle. But I recently moved to TGS. I have a reason to walk places by myself now, at night, sometimes alone. And with the nice weather, I was actually doing this the other night. And it occurred to me... I don't carry much cash. Credit & Debit card charges can be fought and the cards canceled and replaced. Other cards can be replaced. But I could be screwed as far as protecting my phone if a thief can easily get into it. And I'm not naive enough to believe getting mugged walking around isn't a possibility. So I finally caved and put on a passcode.

I know crime can happen to me and I'm aware of my surroundings as a result. But it doesn't stop me from doing a lot of things.

CRIME THREAD once again in danger of falling off main page - but just in the nick of time - someone got stabbed to death today outside the Central Library downtown!

I'm surprised the media haven't gone all crazy over the jacked up homicide scourge that is going on.... there's been an increase over last year's numbers to date of over 50%. I think it is unlikely that we'll end the year with that high of an percentage increase as the spike started last summer, but unfortunately I suspect it will be another year of increased death.

What about all the stabbings! Knives are the new guns...which is great for reducing any bystanders that could be hit.

Sigh. Short on details so far, but sucks for it to happen in TGS...
Police were called to Tholozan and Alfred avenues about 12:40 p.m. to investigate reports of a large group of men fighting and shots being fired, police said. Several people were taken to hospitals.

That's kind of a crummy part of TGS.

This is beautiful. Two perps, one with prison time for armed robbery and another with murder charges dropped in 2010, abduct a teen outside then invade a home in south St. Louis. Homeowner shoots and kills one and injures the other :-(

The thing about survivors of gunshot wounds that makes me sad other than part that they aren't dead is the strain and expense on our healthcare system.

Always makes me happy to see good outcomes like this. Too bad both weren't killed. I feel like if you even threaten to kill someone, it's an automatic 30 years no matter what.

There was some recent change in how rapes are reported or calculated, right? Otherwise... that's good stuff!

Probably and more people are coming forward now too. It doesn't get counted unless it's reported

There was gun fire exchanged between two vehicles near Broadway Oyster bar after 2am this morning. A stray bullet struck a man sitting at a sidewalk table. This just cannot happen.

Statiscally your chances of being hit by gunfire while sitting at sidewalk table is still very low. There was a triple shooting at Red Rocks in Denver at a Nas show last night too. See? This type of thing can happen anywhere.

Seriously though, this city will be strictly slow growth until the demographics change drastically.

The area south of downtown north of Soulard can be vary sketchy at night. If you keep up with local news there is a shooting in the news there about every 3 to 6 months. To fix the issues there the city needs to push for development in the area. So it can connect downtown with soulard.

Maybe the city should look at shutting the place down. It's obviously a problem property if there are a few shootings a year.

As a frequent BOB customer I can attest that White Castle is bad. With all the activity and drama that occurs there I don't know why they don't have security there overnight. When I was a West County teenager in the 80's the White Castle at Barrett Station and Manchester in Des Peres would have two off-duty cops on weekend evenings and one most other overnights. I can't figure out why this one in the city doesn't do that now.

Shut which place down? To clarify this shooting had nothing to do with White Castle or BOB.

According to police, two cars were involved in a gun battle on Broadway and Gratiot around 2:00 a.m. when a stray bullet hit a victim listening to music in the back part of the restaurant’s patio.
Police said the victim, a man in his 20s, was hit in the shoulder and transported to an area hospital in stable condition.

I saw this on Fox2 early this morning!

That area seems to have several shootings a year near the Oyster bar. I don't think that White Castle nor any other places had anything to do with the shooting. These were simply innocent citizens caught in the reins of senseless shootout for no reason.
This is stuff that will hold back our downtown if we don't fix it immediately.
White Castle isn't the problem it's the people & their bad choice of behavior..

Thankfully the man who was grazed by the bullet will be OK. The victim is the trumpet player for Funky Butt Brass Band. Though he wasn't playing with the band at the time of this incident

I don't think White Castle should be shut down, for one thing what would go in that spot?

But its undeniable that the sketchy element late at night tends to hang around that place.

Having dedicated officers watching that parking lot could do wonders for making the scumbags feel unwelcome on that stretch of Broadway.
