Definitely doesn't sound like a car jacking. If they wanted the car, I would assume they would have taken it when the victim got out and the car rolled across the street and hit the barrier.

It certainly seems like there was a personal connection involved of some kind. But who knows at this point. Unless anyone on this forum works for STLPD, I doubt we will know anything before the Post D.

Update: Post is calling this an "Ambush." Phenomenal. Now we can start drawing Jurassic Park imagery regarding downtown.

Jeff Rainford said it was not random, and it was not a carjacking.

Maybe "Ambush" is "Knockout" for cars.

I'm sure this is just a case of some fine youngsters utilizing their spare time, while on summer break. I'm sure they are back home working on their summer reading program this morning.... :x

Found it:

Still, wonder what he has based it on. I have some mistrust for our Mayor's office.

^ I'd like to know what the evidence is. I assume if the PD knows that this was not random, they must have some suspects or idea of who/why this crime was committed. I questioned how this could be random from the first time I heard about it, when there was no sign of a motive. I do not believe anything was stolen. Seems like a targeted hit to me. I sure hope so. Obviously, you do not want any murders, but you'd prefer a targeted hit over random.

^ Pretty sure that the police can only disclose so much evidence. Gotta save it for the court case, eh?

^ Well, the court case and the Mayor's Chief of Staff too, of course.

I'm thinking the suspect pool should include possible other white tail in the area...

And make no mistake of my feeling of deep sadness around this crime too...seriously.

Lots of loitering by people under the ago of 21 and walking around drinking. Added cops in area are nonresponsive. First time I have witnessed that amount of loitering and people walking around with no interest in patronizing the bars. PM me if you want more

^sounds coordinated. probably via facebook, similar to what happened at the loop. and probably in direct response to the increased police presence. was there any violence, or just a lot of potential for it? and why is it that the cops tend to be particularly unresponsive downtown? i remember someone else on the forum saying they got punched by some jack*ss pissing in their doorway and the cops did nothing even though the guy was still standing there harassing him when the cops arrived. ugh...

Yes it could have been coordinated. There was a grand opening for a new boutique store called DNA that was drawing a big crowd which could have also have been the reason. I dont feel it was quite at the level of what has occurred in the Loop but its building.

There was a large police presence, helicopter above, but the street was not blocked and open to traffic. The traffic was very light for a Friday night and there wasnt the usual nuisuances with loud sterios and such. Good news on that front

When I asked the cops, who were obviously summoned from another district or task force, what they were doing to combat the loitering they told me they were given orders to watch and observe. I confirmed that with the head officer who was working across the street. Basically we have a large police presence to try and deter crime but most officers are unwilling to do much unless they actually witness a severe crime. They only time I saw a cop dealing with the loitering, weed smoking, and public drinking is whEn I requested and demanded something to be done about it.

There was a lot of passing the buck and thought the response from the police officers was a ***** joke. Not something you would expect from a big city police dept trying to protect a cities assets. This would never fly in a city like NYC.

Will check again tonight.

A recent P-D article(St. Louis police plan more weekend street closings along Washington Avenue) listed an e-mail address for people to give feedback to the police department on the operation: communityresponse@slmpd.org

At about midnight (June 9/10) there was a shooting one block north of Washington in an alley way, Lucas Ave. and 13th area Witnesses reported about 10 shots fired from a black chevy malibu. One male with long hair was standing shooting through the sunroof. There was apparently a victim that ended up at the shell gas station, but the vehicle fled west to 14th St, then north. A lot of police responded, but apparently they still got away. A friend of mine was woke up by the shots. It is pretty scary, there are a lot of people who live right in that area, as well as restaurants and bars that have outdoor seating. I have talked with a few people that live there and are starting to get concerned for their safety.

I was on Wash Ave at 12 and it was still a good crowd. Lots of paying customers, not any loitering, no horse play. I witnessed cops tell some under 21 to get off Wash Ave.

However there is still a lot of loitering on the streets parallel and on Wash Ave around 15th to 18th. Seems all the police is concentrated on 10th through 14th.

Was this incident on Lucas or Delmar. The Post says it happened on Convention Plaza which is Delmar. Who was the victim?

Last night (Sat night) my windows were open and I live around Washington and 13th ish, my friend and I heard what at first i thought were fireworks and friend thought he heard shots fired, then shots fired in return. So we googled stl police scanner, and then heard them say there was a shooting victim at the shell station on tucker, I'm not sure if this was the same incident as stltoday at convention center or not. Didn't notice the bike cops leave their area and eventually did hear sirens in that direcrtion, was hoping for more info on web today but didn't see it. The description they mentioned on the police scanner was a black male with dreadlocks and a 9mm. Also unusually at closing time 2-3 am there was someone with a megaphone telling people to go home, which I haven't heard before, not sure what business was doing that.

Do you think it may have been the police on the Megaphone?

Can you describe the general vibe on Wash Ave as you saw it last night?

To be honest, none of this makes we want to go to Washington Avenue Friday or Saturday night. Is the police presence and blocked off street really making people safer?

I agree. And if I was an out of towner/visitor, I would think that an area with an increased police presence would mean that the area was unsafe...possibly.
