Yeah, I emailed the reporter yesterday and placed in their comments that it's communityresponse@slmpd.org. St. Louis Metro Police Department (slmpd.org). Not St. Metro Louis Police Dept (smlpd.org). The article has since been corrected.

New word on the street you should like, zink: "Washington Avenue between 10th and 14th to be closed to traffic on weekend nights." No word on when it begins. --- http://goo.gl/qKl7P

Closing off the street seems like a bad idea to me. Part of what makes Washington Avenue so popular and yes, safe, is the continuous presence of people on foot/car/carriage moving up and down the street. Closing off the street keeps the cars away but makes the street that much less inviting. And we all know that one of the best deterrents to crime is the presence of people -- be they out walking or driving in cars. Cutting out a portion of those potential eyes could very easily lead to more loitering, more violence and more ass-hattery from bar patrons.

^ Agree, but it's just 11pm-3am - keeping people cruising out, primarily. If they were closing starting at 7pm or something, it would be a terrible idea.

^^ but currently it's not that safe. that's the whole problem. i really don't think closing the street for a few hours will make it less safe. my guess is that people who are already parked on the street will be allowed to drive out, just no through traffic. so there would still be parked cars and people going to their parked cars. and it's only from 11AM to 3AM. something needs to be tried.

I believe that Beale Street is closed off to traffic and it seems to work just fine.

Wash Ave is generally pretty safe all times of the day. Just because a few incidents occurred doesn't mean it's an unsafe area. These measures are precautionary

^i agree. i didn't mean to imply that it's unsafe, just that it's not quite as safe as we would like it to be (based on incidents like this most recent one). my point was just that i don't think closing the street for a few hours will make it any less safe.

Is on street parking allowed during these times? I noticed no parking signs as I was driving through the eve.

I don't watch your late local news much but when I do I'm always reminded of how they should just go ahead and change the name from "The News" to "Weather, Sports and Crazy sh*t That Black People Did Today".

I mean, Christ, multiple shots fired in Forest Park, infants crawling in the blood of their shot and killed mom and dad for two days, intentional pit bull attacks, grown men police officers paralyzed by a teenager who had too much Dr. Pepper in his baby bottle, murder, etc. And a no-hitter.

Man shot in face leaving the mansion house apartments. Didn't die. Good thing we have so many guns.

You are way off Alex. He would have been ok if the car had WINDOW GUNS. Power windows with power guns. Now we are talking. It's a constitutional right.

Mercedes is a company. Companies are people. Therefore the Mercedes has the right to bear arms. Pretty straight forward if you ask me. "Get er done."

I don't know the area in this great of detail, but it seems as though there would be cameras positioned somewhere close to here, no?

^ Maybe. It's the Arch/I-70 side of the Mansion House garage. It's basically void of people at all hours. The plans for the Arch grounds will make this stretch even more desolate.

As someone who walks this sidewalk 5 days a week, along with many others, it's a very inhospitable walk, not friendly to the pedestrian, littered with trash, dangerous to cross the street and when it starts getting dark early, it can be, at times, a little unnerving. Mostly because people tend to sleep in various hidey holes and you never know they're there until you're right on top of them.

The Mansion House complex does nothing to maintain their landscaping and don't even shovel the sidewalk when it snows back here.

It's a bit disconcerting to hear of a shooting in an area you walk every work day. Sure, it may be random, but still...I'd like to know more details.

Anyone have any info about this at all? Was it a botched carjacking attempt? A robbery? A hit? Anyone? Buehler?
