I so wish a victim in one of these instances was carrying a concealed weapon and taught these thugs a lesson.

I think the level of outrage will lead to arrests.
I sure hope so. After seeing the piece on Channel 2 last night, showing this man's artwork and seeing people who knew him raving about him, saddens me.
I am furious at the lack of respect for human life, that seems to be very prevalent and acceptable behavior from your average street thug.

At one's wit's end in dealing with this senseless stuff, is it time for public flogging? my bad, that's cruel and unusual punishment, far from what this innocent couple endured...

At least the brutal attack was caught on videotape--which should help the police find these cruel inhuman slugs who did this.

I wonder if we have a grinder big enough to toss these 4 thugs into after they are convicted.

Maybe the Zoo could use some low grade zebra feed

Most countries with low crime have a very strict criminal system. Unfortunately, for us in the United States, a slap on the wrist is all too common. I vote for 3 strikes your out law, more prisons and extremely strict stances against all crimes.

I do believe in working to improve family structure, education, reform etc...but that can only get you so far. I think very strict laws would make many thugs think twice and change their ways. If not, enjoy your life in the pen. Make the pen much less comfortable, put them to work and get something out of them for nothing. They owe that much to society.

As you can see, I am fed up with the senseless crimes committed by these street thugs.

"What if it happened to their mom or dad?" she asked. "What are they feeling?"

they don't feel, which is why they can beat an elderly couple to death. i'm sorry, but we can't hope to rehabilitate every thug nor is it feasible to store ever-growing numbers of criminals indefinitely. in the interest of everyone else, these four need to be put down. not for vengeance, not to teach a lesson, but just to permanently remove them from society.

this was a completely inexcusable and unforgivable act. i have absolutely no pity or sympathy for these a**holes. i don't care how they were raised.

Maybe a couple of us on this forum are political leaders of some kind, maybe a few are cops, maybe a few are community leaders...People who are in positions to directly effect our safety...The rest of us can surely say some things and type some things...But I really hope we all 'do' some things to make St. Louis safer...These perps didn't wake up one morning at 21 and start bashing in skulls of elderly citizens...

I agree. I don't think capital punishment prevents crime by scaring would-be murderers, but sometimes the criminal act is so heinous that death is the only suitable response.

Here's another unfortunate, albeit far ancillary, effect of these random, heinous crimes: Complete Polarization. Be it real or perceived, Countians et al feel as though the City is really the only place where this type of crime could happen.

Hence, my idea for a Tumblr blog titled "Fear the County" that would chronicle all the break-ins, shootings, bank robberies, etc. in STL County. The idea's free for the taking, anyone? Anyone? It really is needed.

I'm ***** pissed. I live in the southern part of TGS near the vietnamese "node" and frequent truc lam and consider this part of my neighborhood even though i'm across chippewa. There used to be vietnamese gangs in this area solely for protection like the poor white gangs (they weren't skinhead, they were poor and pressured) during the 80s in chicago or any other group under assault from people who don't respect anything at all. the southside isnt going down without a fight.

no rest for the wicked.

Doug is working out a way to make better parents.

Until then, criminals like this have no business wasting our tax dollars in prisons.

You gonna further break that blog down in a North/South/West County kind of way and see what kind of conclusions we find out about crime and violence?

When I see something like this it doesn't register on a City/County level to me. I understand the dynamic because of perceptions, stats, etc, but when this particular type of violence happens I don't think about how to do damage control on how the crime is perceived by the public. It just sucks on every conceivable human level.

EDIT: I don't mean to imply that you don't think it sucks and I get what your trying to do I'm just saying City/County is less of an issue than WHY and by WHOM.

lol...I like the idea...I was seriously going to start posting the murders and thefts that occur in Missouri and southern Illinois on this thread...

PostApr 20, 2011#1714

This most recent act of aggression is tragic...Just as all murder is...

Here's hoping they get these criminals off the street...I'm not sure how frying them would help make St. Louis safer going forward...But a harsh sentence is surely justified...

I absolutely agree. The point would be to highlight to those living in the County that the "City" isn't the only place bad things happen.

I was at a wedding Sunday and heard of the killing. The Vietnamese are certianly angry, scared, and do not understand why this happened. The elderly in Asian cultures are given the most repsect so this is a huge shock. As I was told the victims were asked for their money and either had none or refused. I recall an elderly white male was beaten in an alley a few years back as well. Hope they find the other 3 sooner than later.

You're going to point out flaws in the County in order to make the City's flaws more easy to swallow? Most counterproductive idea ever?

^yeah I don't like that idea either. I support promoting the positives of the region. All this will do is throw gas on the fire so many people on this forum want to extinguish.

^ Amen. We don't need a contest to see who's more violent. It'll only bring down perceptions of everything.

Dare I say, there's no better way to build up the suburban flight to St. Chuck & JeffCo than making the City and County both look like havens of violence. Only if you want to make Warrenton or High Ridge even more thriving "extreme suburban" communities, have at it.

I'm not so sure that pointing out the reality of crime, wherever it happens, is so terrible...If those facts are presented in misleading ways, then, yes, the laws of unintended consequences can have negative effects...But there is something to the idea of holding a mirror up to those outside the city who irrationally and very quickly write off the city because of crime...It sometimes feels like noncity dwellers view violent crime in the city as something "that goes on there"...and just there...

But there is more crime in the city than county. So I don't see the point of pointing out crime in the county. Seems like it would just be a way of avoiding the fact that we have a good amount of crime in the city. Why don't we just focus on eliminating crime in the city? Crime is the problem, not people's perception of it.

Charges filed in the assault. According to the DA it was a game of "knockout"' where you attack random strangers. He also wasn't from the neighborhood.

I wonder if one of the rules of "knock out" is that the victim has to be at least 70+ years old or is it an all ages and up kind of game?

I think they're still playing "sack punch" in the County. For now...

What a mess.

That game of "knockout" sound just disgusting. What a terrible thing, I feel so bad for that man and his family. I'm confused as to what section of Spring this took place. Warwickland mentioned Truc Lam on Gravios, was it around there?
