I find it funny that he thought that any crime in the county must be thugs driving from the city. He hates when you prove him wrong, he just acted shocked when I told him uhh no, they were not people from the city.

olividarte wrote:I agree. Why bother trying to change minds? I've grown so tired of caring about what people who don't know any better think about where I live.

Life is much less stressful when you just blow them off and live your life.
That's how I've gotten too, I don't fight any more.

I know several people like that -- it's hard to have a conversation with them without getting visibly frustrated.

Have you offered to give him a tour of the city (even the parts NORTH of Delmar <gasp>) to help reshape his opinion?

Why even waste your time?

For me, the conversation usually goes like this:

Me: Hey, we're meeting at Flannery's on Thursday night for some beer and to watch the game.

Them: Where is that?

Me: Washington & 14th

Them: You mean downtown?

Me: Yeah

Them: No thanks, a little too dangerous for me down there, especially after dark

Me: OK. I'll talk to you next week.
haha, I love that.

ThreeOneFour wrote:That is absolutely insane. Of course, he's not much worse than the people that come into the city just for Cardinals and Blues games. I can imagine the panic they must feel when they make that long one or two block walk from the parking lot or garage to their destination. And yet when someone asks where they're from, they'll say St. Louis, sometimes with a disclaimer about how they don't live in the city or even visit the city.

Now, to be fair, this doesn't accurately describe every suburbanite. I know people that drive into the city frequently from places like Oakville, Imperial, Waterloo, Belleville, Edwardsville, Ballwin, and yes, St. Charles. But there are plenty of loudmouths (many of whom seem to pass their idle time on STLtoday.com forums when they're not peering out their windows looking for people that don't look like them) that perpetuate the myths about city living not unlike the person you mentioned. It's so ridiculous, but there's little one can do to change a mind that's so inflexible to begin with anyway.
That's exactly what I get miffed about, and that's why companies that locate their little eye center in Chesterfield and call it "St. Louis Eye Center" (just an example). Something like Six Flags, where people will be driving from 100 miles away to makes sense, but something built for locals (like a doctors office) should not be associated with the city. There's a reason they didn't locate in the city. But, apparently when I argue that, it upsets some people ;)

What's the point? You're not going to change minds. I've tried to convince many people the city ain't that bad, but they're not going to buy it because they either had a bad experience or believe they hype.

Even if you brought them into the City, they'll always find something that's wrong, dirty, crime-ridden, whatever.

I make my point once, the city isn't bad, if they don't believe me, well at least I know what's here to enjoy, and really that's the important thing. Having all those great things at my fingertips. If someone doesn't want to have a great experience, their loss, i'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

It works better than you might think. With some people, you might not be able to change their perceptions in a single conversation, but you can chip away at their negativity over time.

^^^ True...sometimes. I've done it and it takes time, but I've decided it's more important what I think of the City, as a tax paying resident, than someone who doesn't live here.

I just don't care. It's kind of like graduating H.S. or college, all of a sudden trying to "fit in" just doesn't matter and you kind of accept things they way they are, warts & all.

That's how I am. I do what I can to change perceptions, but I know there are many inflexible and narrow minds out there, so I don't get stressed about it.

There was this one couple I met from DeSoto one time, that, well, let's just say that I could easily fill up a chapter in a book about this topic.

Maybe someone got upset Llywelyns ran out of their chips and rarebit. I was there a few weeks ago and they were out of Smithwicks and Guinness. I came about this close to popping a cap in someone's a**.

I hear them ordering almost every night that I listen.

"You got your order ready?"

"Yes, 2 double cheeseburgers, 6 white castles, 4 chicken sandwiches, etc"

Heard a call go out about a girlfriend "setting a boyfriend's clothes on fire in the backyard" while someone else was talking about their order for onion rings :)

Slay was recently slammed by a pro-gun columnist from the Miami Examiner for his anti-gun stance. Remember when Alderman Crazy Troupe said the citizens of St. Louis should arm themselves? Well apparently Slay wasn't to fond of that and now some gun nut is slamming him.

http://www.examiner.com/x-2581-St-Louis ... d-citizens

Personally I'm anti-gun in an urban environment. A lethal weapon has no business in high density areas. Could you imagine if every crazy that wanted a gun was armed and running around a city like New York......ever seen City of God? Or maybe like New York was in the 1970s and 80s when they averaged 3000 murders a year. Ever since there was a big crack down on guns, New York has had about the same number of murders as Chicago recently, which is around 500.

If only gangs, murderers, and rapists thought the same. Not sure why the author is a "nut" either. There are lots of things I don't like about Slay (Democrat, anti-gun, liberal, etc, etc) but he's still the best guy for the job out of the current possibilities that could hold the office. But then maybe I'm crazy.

And Saint Louis or New York isn't Brazil either. It's a vastly different world down there. Not many Westerners would survive long in those neighborhoods.

Cant fight fire with fire though. If citizens start going out there shooting criminals, we are going to have a lot of dead people (I'm not a advocate of violence on any side).

Our murder rates are more comparable to Brazil than the UK and every other developed nation on earth. Most people wouldn't survive long in most of our gun and drug infested inner cities either. I've experienced North St. Louis, Watts, West and South Chicago, large parts of DC and Baltimore and let me tell you. I didn't know if I was America or Beirut. My point is Inner City Houston is a far different place than Fort Bliss, Texas....I agree with arming the soldiers but get guns OFF the streets.

The only thing that makes the article "nutty" is that you disagree with him. He in no way shape or form appears to be an extremist militant. He just disagrees with the mayor's stance.

I'm sure most Americans would have no problem surviving in the neighborhoods by the beach.
