Took a guy's life for probably $30 worth of CDs or something.
Pardon my hoosier...
When nothing's on TV late at night, I like to listen to a live-feed police scanner just to see what's going on. I finally found a good feed for St. Louis city/county. Just thought I'd share.

Does the feed ever change? Or do you always have to listen to the 3rd district?
Nevermind, it appears that it just bounces around to whichever district station is talking...

Yeah I am mostly hearing the city, I have heard calls on Chippewa, Dr King, Virginia, and a couple others. I've only heard one call out of the city I think, in Wellston.
Looks like I may have missed the hoosier mark, I see that the listener count has jumped from 2 to 10 since this post

This is awesome. I guess I'm the biggest hooshz of them all. I'v been asking the GF for a scanner ever since we moved into the city and she always just laughed at me and told me that listening to this activity automatically makes you like 60 years old. Thanks for posting this!

It's pretty interesting when you're bored, and makes you glad you aren't a cop. Heard a call for suspects refusing to leave a party (150 people at the party) who all had guns on Kingshighway, foot pursuit on Chippewa, shots fired on Goodfellow.

My aunt and uncle have a scanner (though for down here, not St. Louis). They said it scares their grandkids at night. And when we were over there, every time it went off our dog turned her head at it.

I think we could sum it up like that.
In disbelief over what a co-worker just said to me. Had to post it right away.
"Looks like the county is getting dangerous. In the last month there's been a murder in Creve Coeur, woman shot in Chesterfield, and a murder-suicide in Manchester."
"Well, it's nothin' to come up Olive from downtown any more."
"So you think it's people from the city committing these crimes?"
"I don't know about all of them, but I bet the burglary murder in Creve Coeur was."
"Nope. Parkway students." (didn't remember north or south)
"Oh really..."
"Yep. And murder-suicide was husband/wife."
"Huh."
Of course, he lives in St. Charles. He is the only person I know that literally will not take free tickets to Cardinals/Blues games IN SUITES (where everything is paid for) from vendors because he refuses to come in to the city. I was told long ago that it's because he had a friend get killed in a car jacking attempt in south city; I found out that it was a guy who worked at the gym he went to had a friend that he had never even met who got killed, not his friend. This guy is literally frightened of the city. Frightened.

I know several people like that -- it's hard to have a conversation with them without getting visibly frustrated. This guy is literally frightened of the city. Frightened.
Have you offered to give him a tour of the city (even the parts NORTH of Delmar <gasp>) to help reshape his opinion?

^^I actually feel sorry for someone who is so paralyzed by fear.
I'm assuming this guy drives. Does he know how much more likely he is to die on the highway between Creve Coeur and St. Chuck than in a random crime?
One of my coworker's father passed away a few months ago and the wake was in North city. My office is also in Creve Coeur and as my coworkers were mapquesting the location (the funeral home was right at Shreve and Nat. Bridge--area didn't seem too bad from what I saw) they asked me what I knew about the neighborhood and if they should be concerned about going down there in the middle of the day. I told them the most dangerous part of their trip would be the drive.

It's a wonder we don't have like 5 homicides every night. Just last night there were numerous calls of shots fired and even one incident where a boyfriend was firing shots at his girlfriend's car as they were driving west on 70 just past Goodfellow.
Also a lot of vehicle accidents and for some reason a lot result in overturned vehicles. One in particular was cars and motorcylces drag racing resulting in a crash with two cars ending upside down.
And also seems to be a lot of domestic disturbance calls, usually involving alcohol and quite a few tampering and break in calls.
It's definitely interesting as well as eye-opening to all the problems that the north side has to constantly deal with.

That is absolutely insane. Of course, he's not much worse than the people that come into the city just for Cardinals and Blues games. I can imagine the panic they must feel when they make that long one or two block walk from the parking lot or garage to their destination. And yet when someone asks where they're from, they'll say St. Louis, sometimes with a disclaimer about how they don't live in the city or even visit the city.
Now, to be fair, this doesn't accurately describe every suburbanite. I know people that drive into the city frequently from places like Oakville, Imperial, Waterloo, Belleville, Edwardsville, Ballwin, and yes, St. Charles. But there are plenty of loudmouths (many of whom seem to pass their idle time on STLtoday.com forums when they're not peering out their windows looking for people that don't look like them) that perpetuate the myths about city living not unlike the person you mentioned. It's so ridiculous, but there's little one can do to change a mind that's so inflexible to begin with anyway.

Why even waste your time?
For me, the conversation usually goes like this:
Me: Hey, we're meeting at Flannery's on Thursday night for some beer and to watch the game.
Them: Where is that?
Me: Washington & 14th
Them: You mean downtown?
Me: Yeah
Them: No thanks, a little too dangerous for me down there, especially after dark
Me: OK. I'll talk to you next week.

Fixed.
There was a murder-homicide in Manchester last night. Better stay away from that area, with all the crazy people there and whatnot. Too violent.

Juice, your 'hoosier' is officially pardoned, thanks for the link.
The Central Scrutinizer wrote:Why even waste your time?
I agree. Why bother trying to change minds? I've grown so tired of caring about what people who don't know any better think about where I live.
Life is much less stressful when you just blow them off and live your life.
