Washington St. or Washington Ave? Washington Street is north of page.
Is it anywhere near Olive Street Road?Moorlander wrote:Washington St. or Washington Ave? Washington Street is north of page.

I was of the understanding that this happened on Washington St. I'd have to think that something of this nature would only make the news if it occurred on Washington St. versus Washington Ave. It is amazing that people are still so stupid, leaving valuables in plain sight, visible for these scumbags to steal. How dumb is it to leave your GPS on the dash!?! I've seen it many times down there. Why not put a sign on the dash that says 'please break my window and steal my stuff'!

Details:
4 different areas of street parking were hit on dlemar/washington ave last night. A group of 3 youths did smash and grabs, looking for electronics and firearms. They hit 17th and delmar and got my car last night. I dont leave much in my car. All they took was a coat. The officer who responded to take my statement said their primary focus is to break in and look for stashed handguns ("to commit robberies" i was told) in the glovebox, under the seats and sidepockets. They'll take wahtever they find along the way. Cars a picked totally at random. They hit 3 cars, my acura, a dark tinted older tahoe (no way for them to see what was in it) and another suv. I was able to give loose descriptionsm but id-ed the van (stolen and found abandoned in minutes)and got a partial plate. Mind you these cars were parked on a well lit street, with mine being directly in form of our building entrance. They simply dont care...about property, or consequences.
In total they thought about 10-12 cars were hit last night. They apparently used small rocks to break out the windows (found one on my passenger seat). A neighbor of mine who like me came to the window to scare them off and call the cops had some of these rocks thrown at him. All in all it sucks, particularly because it really didnt matter how well you took preventative action.
The officer told me they were going to consider the actions one crime, not many smaller so as to guarantee a felony charge (there has to be over $750 worth of stuff taken, and in my case nowhere close)which would particularly make it easier to make juveniles (suspected age) actually suffer some sort of punishment (if caught). Dont know how much anyone else lost, but I consider myself lucky and have already replaced my window for $200.

In all seriousness... if you saw them breaking into your car... are you allowed to shoot at them?

I am pretty sure you are mistaken about that.Moorlander wrote:Washington St. or Washington Ave? Washington Street is north of page.
From our stylebook (although it's 10 years old, and perhaps something has changed since then):
Washington Avenue, Washington Boulevard -- The avenue runs from the riverfront to Jefferson; the boulevard runs from Jefferson Avenue to University City (the boulevard is 2600 to 6200 blocks) and back to avenue in U. City. But a short segment west of Union is called Washington Terrace.

True. I know that Washington St from traffic reports which refer to 270 at Washington/Elizabeth. I thought we were referring to city streets only.

Gosh, I just saw that Washington University was one of the "most stressful" colleges in the county. My wife made the astute observation that it likely stressful because of how dangerous St. Louis is!

Crime only weighted at 10% otherwise Wash U would certainly have ranked higher.
There certainly was a perception among WU students when I was there (graduated 7 years ago) that unless you were going up to the Delmar Loop, you were stupid to leave the campus.Alex Ihnen wrote:Gosh, I just saw that Washington University was one of the "most stressful" colleges in the county. Every now and then I page through their student run newspaper and see stories inside that suggest that while giving students transit passes has budged people a little bit, this still hasn't changed much.
So for the past few weeks I have been noticing a lot of "kids" wearing either excessive blue or excessive red clothes. I mean excessive in that they frequently have totally one-color outfits with colored handkerchiefs hanging out of their pockets. I have not really seen this before and am wondering if it is a sign of a resurgence in gang activity. In a related note, on my way in to work this morning, I saw one of these guys (a red one) walking down Grand past the water tower with the butt of a huge pistol sticking out of his front pocket. Yes, I am POSITIVE it was a pistol. I called the cops and gave them a good description and location. I just hope they respond. Started out this morning feeling really good, with everything looking so spring-like. Now I am just pissed off. Especially after that mugging/pistol whipping of two middle aged women at Roger and Humphrey on Easter at lunch time.

Well, any college campus is a bit insular. It was that way at Indiana as well. Not that it was particularly dangerous to leave campus, but just that there was no particular reason to leave campus. That's especially true at WU where most students live contiguous to the academic campus and the food service is fantastic.

Anyone know if they caught that thug who shot the guy from Maplewood in Sauget?
I saw that they have a suspect, issued warrants and are looking for him.
That is the last I've heard about it.

You run over to the car and shoot them. When the police arrive, you tell them the guy threatened to kill you.zink wrote:In all seriousness... if you saw them breaking into your car... are you allowed to shoot at them?
I would have assumed gangwear, but yesterday I was shopping at the Schnuck's on Grand north of Natural Bridge and saw two kids walking through the parking lot together - one dressed head to toe in red and the other covered in blue. They were carrying on like old friends in a fun conversation. It was crazy and bent my mind a little.TGE-ATW wrote:So for the past few weeks I have been noticing a lot of "kids" wearing either excessive blue or excessive red clothes. Why? I used to shop there and Schnucks should be ashamed of themselves.bsever wrote: I was shopping at the Schnuck's on Grand north of Natural Bridge
I buy what groceries I can at the Aldis at Grand and Natural Bridge because it is the closest food option, and then go to the Schnucks for the things I can't get at Aldis. It really is a stark difference - Aldis is neat, clean, organized, and the checkers are friendly and very fast. The nearby Schnucks? The opposite. For late night food emergencies I'll head down to Culinaria. I'm looking forward to the North City Co-op opening in Old North this June, since I'll be able to walk to get my groceries. That will be a real game changer, especially on Saturdays when the farmer's market is in full swing a block away.lukethedrifter wrote:

Back to crime, the White Castle at Hebert and Florrisant has seen a lot of gunfire lately and seems to be a central hangout for dealers. Does anyone have a line of communication with White Castle's regional director?

That White Castle normally has an off duty Police Officer or Sheriff working security at night. Or did in the past anyway.
