Business leaders lobby county lawmakers to approve funding for convention center expansion

Looks like the BJ had a few updated renderings too:

Not a whole lot different from what we've already seen.

^That's a few more interiors than I recall, and they look pretty tolerable. All in all I'm glad to see some progress and I hope the county will sign off forthwith.

Do we think the convention center upgrades will break ground this year?

They already did, should be half done this year.

^ Yep. The city issued bids and is getting work done (primarily on the loading dock and exhibit hall expansion portions). They’ll wait for the County to issue bonds for the ballroom and outdoor plaza.

Okay, so then half (85M) of the permits have been issued, so we’ll have another 125M this year?

Not sure if much is added with Post Dispatch article noting pending vote, cost concerns.   Of course any delay now would mean that any increase in upfront costs will be just replaced with inflationary costs further down the road.

^ Not surprised on the increasing costs, from materials to tight labor market so on.   However, a little surprise only one bidder on a project of this scale or scope considering you got a few fair sized general contractors in the region that could  easily perform the work from Clayco to McCarthy  to Alberici and a few smaller contractors who could probable team up on bonding the work.  Article behind paywall so not sure who is lone bidder.

Thanks, still a head skratcher to me on the lone bidder.  I'm I missing something because a project like this is decent backlog for the bigger contractors? is the schedule fast tracked? Local hire requirements?

I think this is going to eat up more and more of the Rams money.

With funding still TBD due to politics, this shouldn't be surprising. I absolutely see why no contractor wants to submit a binding bid for $70M+ if funding might be delayed into the distant future and cost of materials goes up.

Right - was approved by the country on April 19th, correct? I should have written my previous comment a bit differently... With RFP responses due on Tuesday (May 3rd), I'm just saying that timing was not exactly great to expect many or any bids.  I'm sure they'll re-post the RFP and get better traction now that the financing pieces are settled.

Here is some the draft language proposed.   The thought on how Ram's settlement funds or at least not a portion of it is not subject to politics at state level is ignoring that RSA was created under state law and therefore very much subject to change coming from Jeff City.   But my question to the crowd based on draft language, assume part of it in part is driven to help cover convention funds? and their must be some backroom discussion between city and county

According to a draft of the language, the settlement money the RSA receives would be put into a separate fund and be limited to “economic development” or “convention and tourism development.” Economic development would be confined to job training in St. Louis and St. Louis County or infrastructure projects in low-income areas.

The language would require a two-thirds vote from the 11-member RSA board to spend any of the settlement money it receives, or eight votes, rather than the simple majority the RSA needs to take action now. The most recent version, circulated among board members Friday morning, would also require a supporting vote from one of the city’s three appointees and a vote from one of the county’s three board members. The other five members are appointed by the Missouri governor.
