Unfortunate closure but isn't the end of the world, the alternate bridge is only 400 yards away. It's also not like it's the accessible route either, there's dozens of steps involved to take the closed route. I actually hope they broaden the reconstruction scope a bit to infill the narrow path between the two ped bridges so it's all at the same level with railings, the steep slopes and level changes are somewhat dangerous. The non-standard stairs to the east of the Metrolink bridge are also a hazard with the odd tread depths and no handrail. Repaint/refresh the historic ped bridge over the tracks while they're at it.
Without exaggeration, I walk over these bridges 10X/week and had no idea they were damaged. Heck, I used them this very morning.  Zero signage or markers that it was damaged. weird
Personally - and this is indeed about ME. LOL - this sucks.   No, 400 yards isn't a lot but that's 7-10 mins added on my walking commute.

Isn't it great that people's only viable option from Jeffco to the city is I-55? Yay America.

I see he was driving a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia. Almost all new tractors come "standard" with collision avoidance technology, including automatic emergency braking, but most owner-operators or trucking companies order trucks with those systems deleted. The NTSB just released a report about a truck crash in Ohio in 2023 where they reiterated the need for federal requirements for such systems. Europe has required them on trucks since 2015.

Scroll to page 70 of the PDF for the section on collision avoidance technology

Oh, truckers absolutely hate these systems and claim they cause more crashes than they prevent. But if they would decide to be better drivers and not, y'know, kill people, then maybe it wouldn't be necessary.

Car crashed into the historic walking bridge over FPP in Forest Park. Bridge is a total loss and has to be demolished. I’m so freaking sick of motorists and cars and all the accommodations we make for them while telling everyone else to go screw themselves.

Not disagreeing with your sentiment but there's a few details missing here: it was not a car but an overheight St. Louis Water Division boom truck being driven by a city employee, and wasn't a catastrophic crash (the strike happened in June and the bridge has been open to pedestrians since then, but ultimately it was enough damage to warrant replacement). The bridge isn't necessarily "low-clearance" either, its 6" higher than even the FHWA Interstate minimum clearance of 14', and this is a city controlled roadway. Also this isn't the nearby historic Wabash truss bridge, but a newer pedestrian bridge that probably dates to around the 1980s. Yes it's frustrating that pedestrian infrastructure is being lost without a clear rebuilding plan, but the blame here ultimately comes down to the city and a poorly trained water division employee (who apparently did not see any repercussions according to STLPR reporting https://www.stlpr.org/news-briefs/2025-10-08/st-louis-water-division-truck-damaged-forest-park-pedestrian-bridge).

Wow it's depressing that the city is responsible for this on both ends.

Awesome that anyone can operate a car.

KSDK - Man pleads guilty in death of St. Louis officer David Lee
Chavez-Rodriguez had a blood alcohol content of .10 two hours after hitting Lee, court records said. In court Tuesday, prosecutors also said he had ketamine, cocaine and methamphetamine in his system.

Police Chief Robert Tracy and multiple police officers were in the courtroom for the plea hearing.

Earlier this month, Chavez-Rodriguez was sentenced to seven years in prison for an unrelated 2020 domestic violence case in which he physically abused a woman and attempted to hit her with his car.

He previously pleaded guilty in that case and was given five years probation, with the condition that he could not drink or drive; After the crash that killed Lee, he was found to have violated the conditions of his probation.
