I wonder how much longer the project will be delayed if Centene pulls out? Their entrance has already added months to the process, (with no end in sight), if they back out, will the project have to be designed again (with accompanying delays)? Brownstar Village is officially a debacle at this point. I just hope it doesn't get downgraded to epic failure.

 Brownstar Village.

 Blumpkin. It's too much, I can't breathe...

I believe that is the first time anyone has thrown that word out on this forum. And I can't imagine a more appropriate thread in which to use it...

How 'bout: The city has done everything they asked, and now Cordish is just sitting there on Pujols Pond, waiting for the blumpkin.

Or: Centene and Cordish need to get over their differences, I say mutual blumpkins and let's move on!

My cynical St. Louis prediction:

Centene withdraws its intent to move to Ballpark Village, gives St. Louis and Clayton the finger, and relocates to the Sunbelt, where they are given the red carpet.

My eternally optimistic, next generation, new wave st. louis prediciton:

It all works out, groundbreaking in August. Bank it. If anyone would like to join my optimism you have to see a counselor and after your first 2 "wins" its $2,500 dollars for each additional session, where I can't ensure that you will get a "win" each time. But do please keep coming back, because after your 100th win your alien spiritual self will transcend your humanly form and allow you to be an all-knowing demi-god. Did I mention the price of counsel increases exponentially with each level gained?

Doesn't somebody else already run a racket like this?

Oh yeah...Scientologists...dang!

I have to say that the news of the Centene deal being officially 'up in the air' is VERY depressing. When you think of all of the optimism we had 4-5 years ago, it really depresses those of us dreaming of a BOOMING downtown in St. Louis. Look at all of the "failed" or "delayed" projects. The Bottle District, Centene deal, BPV, Roberts Tower and Skyhouse, to name a few. I know the economy s*cks, but it is still discouraging. 4-5 years ago, I thought these projects would be done and we'd be hearing about new projects and dream projects like Choteau's pond , getting off of the ground. Guess I need to come to the realization that nothing comes easy for STL. I think our time will come, when the economy picks up, but I have to say, us hardcore city advocates are having trouble convincing suburbanites that the city is REALLY back. :(

They are working on Roberts Tower as we speak, and have been for months.

I watched the Lamping presser this afternoon and Jr. was there accepting the presidency gig, and the press asked him a few questions on BPV. I got to say, the impression he gave off about BPV in that press conference ... was really, really scary. You could tell he was trying to say positive things, but he was not hiding his emotion very well. And the statements he did make were all very vague. You could see some disappointment and concern in his face. Anyway, the press only got to ask a couple questions on BPV before Billy D. dodged and said that the press conference was not about BPV but all the wonderful things Lamping had done.

Anyway, just my opinion after watching him talk about it. I was one of those that felt pretty confident it was going to be okay, but watching him in that press conference did not inspire any confidence at all.

To be fair, that press conference wasn't about the BPV. I'm just as concerned about this as anyone, but I wouldn't read too much into that situation. With the mounting rumors surrounding this issue, they will probably have an actual press conference sometime soon. If they dodge questions at the conference then we can all start to get really concerned.

Morning After guys had lamping on this morning. Just caught a tidbit when I was out on the road, but Lamping said he was 100% certain that BPV will happen and that it will be "spectacular." He acknowledged the delays, but compared it to the new stadium, which they had originally hoped to open in 2004, but obviously didn't until 2006. I only caught a few minutes before I had to get out of the car for an appointment. Anyone else hear what he ahd to say? Perhaps he may be a bit more open to share some info since he most likely knows plenty and is no longer and employee of the Cards.

The Lamping interview is available in MP3 format . They also had a suprisingly good discussion about BPV in particular, and Downtown STL in general earlier in the day. That audio from that is available .

They had a segment on that and BPV last night on channel 4. I thought it ended on a positive note, saying that the ballpark was completed 2 years after it was hoped, but it still got done.

Thanks for posting the links...interesting broadcast.

The last link made me think about the details of bpv (what kind of retail space), and how they will affect the success of it.

For instance, if they outrageous leasing, it may only be fit for chains and applebeeses. It could end up just like an every other strip mall characteristic entertainment district, not far off from what union station is now.

I sure hope that it will offer unique down and derrty st. louis attractions and locations unique to stl. Maybe a restaurant that serves ONLY st. louis cuisine? Like gooey buttercake stands. Batting cages at the park would be fun...so would a public pool....

Would it be equivalent to fisherman's wharf in San Fran? What would it need to have to be "so st. louis"?

Here's what I take out of everything that has been said. For all the negativity, BPV will indeed happen. The question is whether Centene will be the center piece. I remain confident that any issues will get worked out. Lamping's comments seem to confirm this. We'll see.

That was very interesting to listen to. Mark Lamping was very knowledgable about the city listening to him and we are losing a valuable leader. However, he did seem confident that Ballpark Village would get done and be spectacular.

I was particularly intrigued with the general Ballpark Village / downtown discussion in the second audio broadcast. I'm impressed by the knowledge those guys have. If only all young adults in STL carried the optimism and openess those guys possess.
