That website said that same thing, with the same number, in 2020.  Hence the opening paragraph "St. Louis is a city located in St. Louis County Missouri. With a 2020 population of 294,890..."

Wikipedia is using that same link as its source, which is weird because that edit skipped the the official 2020 number (that hasn't even been released yet).  I've also never seen anything other than official United States Census estimates used as a source on Wikipedia...

Edit:  Read a little further and you get to this nugget lol:
The population growth of St. Louis has fallen flat and even gone negative over the last few years. From 2012 to 2013, the city's population grew just 0.2%, but the metropolitan area lost about 100,000 residents.
Say what now?

Annnd...how can you have an estimate for 2021 when 2021 isn't over yet?

^Other than the actual decennial census the other main methods are American Community Survey and the annual 'vintage' method.  The census data is mostly collected by summer so is really for the half year, not the full year.  Same for the vintage method, it's up to about June/July of year stated.

The following come from the vintage method.  And will be adjusted when the Census comes out.  The Census traditionally shows lower than annual vintage/ACS.

Here is STL City for 2020, actually up to summer 2020, not full year 2020.
https://www.recenter.tamu.edu/data/popu ... Louis_city

STL County up to summer 2020..
https://www.recenter.tamu.edu/data/popu ... uis_County

STL Metro up to summer 2020...
https://www.recenter.tamu.edu/data/popu ... s%2C_MO-IL

The raw data is here...

^ Yeah I’ve seen all that…I’m not looking for census data.

I was more curious how “worldpopulationreview.com” ended up as a source on Wikipedia lol.

Ah I follow you.  It was just an estimate based on existing pattern but yeah, odd source when there are better.

Yup, this is pretty much standard across the country with cities/metro areas overperforming estimates and rural counties showing across the board worse declines.

Here is the national county map they released:

^ Seems to be the case. I read in the Chicago paper today that they gained 50,000 this time around compared to losing around 200,000 between 2000-2010.

Good to see the City land above 300,000 (and the County above 1,000,000)…for now.

What a gift for democrats.  Rural America is dying. Whites are now only 57.8% and in Georgia only 50.1%.

White: 57.8% (full two points lower than estimates)
Hispanic: 18.7%
Black: 12.1%
Asian/Other: 11.4%

Here you go! Unfortunately the Census Keystone Cops are not making the data available in easy to access spreadsheets for the time being.

When does Neighborhood level data come out?  I'm always curious about which neighborhoods in STL grew/declined and by how much.

The census block data and all higher levels have been released, it is just in a format that is not super accessible.

It's hard to tell neighborhood level since the census blocks go beyond some neighborhood boundaries. But a quick figuring out by me puts the Central West End around 20,000 people, or 6,000 more than 2010. It's just hard at this point until the data can be sorted out.

If only it were so simple. While the demographics are certainly on the Democrats side, the voting restriction legislation and redistricting schemes absolutely favor Republicans. They aren't concerned with winning over majorities of the population, they only care about being able to keep control as a minoritarian party. And in many ways, they are succeeding. It is entirely possible that the exact same groups vote in the exact same way and in the exact same numbers in 2022 as they did in 2020, with the Republicans winding up potentially gaining 13 House seats (and the Speakership) just from redistricting. Keep in mind, 2020 was generally a very good election for Democrats - they lost seats in the House, but they still kept the majority. They could have just as strong a turnout next November as they did last November (highly unlikely, given historic trends), and still wind up losing control of the House. I wish the electoral picture were rosier, but it isn't. We do ourselves no favors by pretending like everything will be just fine next November. We need federal voting rights legislation passed, because there is a lot of nasty stuff in the pipeline in many critical states. Manchin and Sinema need to wake the fork up.

I almost forgot about the race numbers. As anticipated, I can report that the City of St. Louis is now plurality white:

City of St. Louis
Percent Black/African American alone or in combination: 45.4
Percent White alone or in combination: 49.2
Percent Asian alone or in combination: 5.1

Changes to how the numbers are calculated means that we can't do apples to apples to the 2010 numbers, but even looking at White Alone vs. Black Alone, White alone has edged ahead.
