Fantasic news. Locally owned grocer, reasonably priced, fresh food, and the one in Kirkwood is clean, and stocked and staffed well. Now, am I interpreting it correctly, that the majority will be in St. Louis? If so, more tax dollars for the city, and University City...great news all around!
Fantastic news - The kirkwood location is awesome, and it is a magnet - not just for the area - but gets a lot of business from foriegn nationals in out state Missouri and SoIL, Columbia, Cape, Carbondale as far away as Kansas City, I will be excited to see what they do with a new store as they have managed to keep a 40 year old former Kroger looking good.
Great news. Wash U. picked well.
You sure that wasn't a National?beer city wrote:Fantastic news - The kirkwood location is awesome, and it is a magnet - not just for the area - but gets a lot of business from foriegn nationals in out state Missouri and SoIL, Columbia, Cape, Carbondale as far away as Kansas City, I will be excited to see what they do with a new store as they have managed to keep a 40 year old former Kroger looking good.
You are right - Kroger was across the street, which became Alpine Shop, going back to my grade school daysdweebe wrote:Great news. Wash U. picked well.

FYI - WU has left this comment on the story:
"Glad to see your interest in the new Wash U development. We are excited as
well. We are actively negotiating with several potential tenants, including the owners of Global Foods, however no leases have been signed."

I know I'm being lazy and could find it somewhere in this thread: but what's the estimated completion date?
I believe the building is expected to be ready for students moving in for fall semester 2014. So, late July or early August of next year.
Same goes for the retail space or will they try to open that prior to the residences being finished?
The P-D reports that WUSTL will officially announce Global Foods Market as the grocery for this development, now named The Lofts at Washington University. The store will occupy 15,000 square feet of the retail space available.
Joe Edwards will also open a new all-night restaurant called the Peacock Loop Diner, occupying 4,800 square feet. It will be the Loop's first all-night place to eat and will have old-time diner features like a pie case and will display peacock jewelry and other items from Edward's personal collection.
Both businesses are scheduled to open in August 2014. Read more on STL Today: http://goo.gl/nvXAV

I guess that leaves 2,200 sqft. for a boutique store of some kind? Or is that going to be lobby space?

The associated map again shows that the grocer is (90%?) located in the city, so hopefully it gets the sales tax revenue.
Also, is anyone getting a bad vibe on this streetcar thing? From the article: "Adelstein added that the project would benefit from having a stop on the route of the Loop Trolley, the two-mile streetcar project on which construction could begin next spring."
First, next spring is much further than when it was supposed to start and second, too often "could" means "check back again with us in six months and we'll likely give you the same answer." Hopefully this relative vanity project doesn't turn into a boondoggle, which we can't afford if we want to advance transit in the region.

I think WUSTL has enough clout and political capital with their development to keep the fire lit under the trolley project - not time to panic yet.
