I stayed a couple of nights in Cedar Rapids. They have a big landfill hill visible from downtown  they call Mount Trashmore.

One of my favorite memories of the time in highschool that I had an exchange student living with me from Spain: We are driving past that dump and he looks out the window and exclaims in his heavy spanish accent "Oh look it's a mountain!"

If you go to pretty much any oval track in the country, the seats are always on either the south/west side of the track. Precisely because the sun sets and disrupts tv cameras and fans' views. Just sitting at an evening Cards game in the bleachers sucks when the sun sets and peeks thru the stadium roof; even with sunglasses on.

It will be interesting to see what they propose for the entertainment district.
The purchase is the latest expansion at WWT Raceway. Francois said WWT Raceway’s footprint spanned about 150 acres in 2011 when he purchased the facility and that it has since expanded to encompass nearly 700 acres. A major expansion came in 2019 when WWT Raceway acquired the adjacent Gateway National Golf Links, an 18-hole, 220-acre golf course located north of its racing oval.
Francois said WWT Raceway’s land acquisition deals are part of the “commitment we’re making to lay the groundwork for a long-term effort to make sure racing is in the St. Louis region for a long, long time.” He said they provide the raceway with an opportunity to target commercial development around its facility.
“I believe now we have the land available for what our future development needs will be. The next step of this is working with a land planner as we develop the ideas and thoughts to bring a world-class entertainment zone to the raceway,” he said.

I'm not a NASCAR guy in any kind of way, but I do think it's great that the event is back in the St. Louis area, and that it seems to be pretty successful.

I remember a few months ago, the owner of World Wide Technology Raceway was wanting to add an entertainment district to the complex. I hope that ends up happening. It'd be so wonderful for Metro East.

Today's race is a sellout.

Indy Car put on a great show at Gateway last night. The race was shown live in prime-time on FOX, and they shared several nice shots of St. Louis

Disappointed that the stands were so empty. The tickets were relatively inexpensive, so I'm not sure why they didn't sell better.

Did they advertise? I don’t know it was set until I saw it on TV.

They couldn't have advertised well.  I didn't even know it was going on until it was over.

Here's an AI overview of the attendance, FWIW:
  • Attendance: Estimates suggest a crowd of 42,000+ attended the race.
  • Previous Year: The 2025 race exceeded the attendance for the race in 2019, when the series returned to Gateway after a hiatus.
  • Turn 1 and 2 Grandstands: For the first time since 2017, the grandstands between Turns 1 and 2 were open, accommodating a significant number of additional spectators.

That was my same thought. Outside of the signage along Route 203 I never heard a radio ad, saw a TV ad or anything on social media.

So this is either a lie or woefully ignorant.

Pasted below is the link in YouTube for the full race highlights. The main grandstand was more or less full.  I agree with other expressing the sentiment that the race was lightly advertised.

It doesn’t appear that the turn 1 & 2 stands were open.

There were likely 30-40K in attendance

Apparently, as part of last week's IndyCar festivities, Colton Herta's team was caught up in the very American and very STL experience of gunfire. I've seen this reported nowhere locally.

FWIW - Fryer is a very fair reporter and this tweet was in reaction to vocal NASCAR tweeps complaining about a race in Mexico City.

I'll also add that I thought the race was advertised quite heavily. As we all know, social media ads are highly targeted so if you aren't part of the racing demo, you'd never see them. I was served ads constantly for weeks headed into the race.

It's just IndyCar. 40+K for *any* race beyond the Indy 500 is a large crowd.

The TV announcers kept raving about the "packed house".

I could see the targeted thing.  I'm not too into racing, but I've been to a few races; CART races and two of Nascar races one before they left and one after they returned.

I’m kinda surprised I didn’t get the targeted ads. I’m in the demographic and spend money on car races at least once a year.

I’d like to hear more about the Herta story. I’m skeptical he was “dodging” gun fire

I heard a rumor that a new racing facility to replace the existing oval is in the works. Anyone else heard this?
