The Indy Car open-wheel racing series is returning to Gateway International Raceway next year. This is a pretty big deal:

I'm rather excited by this. Not because I'm a racing fan, but it's great to see Gateway back to life.
And yes, getting Indy Car is a big deal! And it's a totally different demographic than NHRA and NASCAR Truck Series.

I also like their focus on creating 'Race Week' excitement. Now if the surrounding area could spruce itself up a little...

Last week's 500 mile Indy Car race was a huge hit. Buzz is building that Gateway could soon host a top-tier NASCAR race.

It's a big weekend at Gateway. The NASCAR Truck Series and Indy Car's top drivers (including 2-time Formula One Champion Fernando Alonso) will be racing a double-header on Sunday.

And yes, fans will be in the stands. Not sure what the capacity is, but social distancing will be enforced.

Indy signed on for another 5 years at gateway. Great to see.

Now let’s see if the NASCAR cup race pans out. There was a tweet yesterday that they were in talks.

Random question. Why is it the Bommorito 500 when it is neither 500 laps or 500 miles?

I watched most of last nights race on NBCSN. I’m not a big race fan but I thought the production for TV was great. So many cameras on every car. They kept the leaderboard up at all times and would focus on a single car for a while building drama. I was getting into the aggressive young French driver. Liked how they would show the fans things he did like find clean air at times to speed up and pass on turns. They said many drivers love the track.

“In July 2020, the race was shortened to 250 miles (200 laps) to accommodate a revised schedule for the COVID-19 pandemic. The event will now feature two identical 200-lap races in the afternoon”.

The race last night was 260 laps of about 1.25 miles each, which is 500 Kilometers.
(About 311 miles.  It's like driving to Madison Wisconsin from St. Louis in one evening.)

Ahh I guess I can by that kind of. Looks like it was 248 laps pre covid. Still doesn’t really make sense when the Indy 500 is 500 miles. I feel like usually the number refers to laps or miles and this one is neither.

And top-tier drag racing is coming to town on September 26th, when the NHRA brings the Midwest Nationals to Gateway.

The Midwest Nationals come to StL every year and its my favorite form of car racing. There really isn't anything like it. Even if you're not a car racing fan, I recommend attending the qualifying round that runs into the night. You will not be disappointed.

Top Fuel dragsters are said to be the fastest-accelerating machines on the planet. They go from a dead stop to 330 MPH in less than 4 seconds. It's insane, really.

And I think StL allows you to be closer than any other venue

^In a previous life (advertising) I worked on the Pennzoil/Quaker State account which sponsored an NHRA driver. His car (funny car) reached 7,000 hp. When I told him that his hp is higher than most railroad engines…well, you should have seen his eyes.

I'd also like to point out that drag racing is probably the most diverse form of racing there is. The top levels have several women drivers who are regular winners, and other  minorities are well represented too. And the open competitions welcome every backyard mechanic to race his home-built machine against other regular folks.

Mods, maybe we should change the name of this thread to better reflect all the different types of racing that happens at this venue? Maybe something like "Gateway International WWT Raceway" or "World Wide Technology Gateway Raceway"

I was just coming in here to suggest that framer 😂

I was given the opportunity to visit Gateway last weekend for the first time for the Indy Car race. I was in the Bobby Rahal suite because I was able to sell a lot of moonshine this month, but wow what a way to experience my first race (even though our car crashed in the first two laps)

I don't really have a point here but it's crazy how much economic activity these races attract. Hopefully NASCAR works out.

Nicely done! There are (and were) a few higher horsepower locomotives, but that's pretty tip-top. More than most fighter aircraft previous to the modern era too, though converting static thrust to horsies is maybe even more complicated than converting tractive effort. A GE J79 with full afterburner seems to come in at right about seven thousand stallions. (Mind you, the F-4 Phantom had two of them, but still . . . ) Why not just strap a rocket* to your car. ;-)

*Do not do this. Seriously! Serious engineers sometimes kill themselves doing silly stuff like that.

^Heh! I don't mean to tell serious engineers not to do it, just saying don't try it at home. I'll believe that's a six or eight thousand horse funny car. Also some very serious engineering. Lord, look at the steering on that thing! And if you're car needs a vertical stab you know something got serious.

It'll be good to get NASCAR back. Haven't followed it in 13 years, I used to when I worked on the Pennzoil account (Roush Racing). And when it was here, it was the just second-rate Busch (and Truck) series and not the flagship NEXTEL series.  I don't know if they break those races up anymore, it's been too long and too far removed...
