I didn’t realize how close WWT was to downtown. Basically just over the Musial. Should have some nice downtown views.
Quick pipe dream, Fairmount (or Fan Duel or whatever) should relocate the horse track right there with WWT and Gateway National.

Yeah the views to the west are fantastic. But for some inexplicable reason the grandstands face east, where the view is Not Great Bob.
For the life of me I can't understand why they built the grandstands facing the massive landfill and not the iconic downtown skyline behind them.

Because if they faced west the fans would be staring into the sun during races
And IMO that's short-sighted (get it?)
I understand it for large outdoor venues generally but sunglasses exist and you're not staring *up* at the cars.
In this instance I think the benefits of facing west outweigh the downsides.

^ Sunglasses or not, facing the sun for entire NASCAR race would probably still kind of suck.
I was talking more camera angles for telecasts. Most people going to a NASCAR race probably aren't too concerned with city views anyway. I'm still the only person I know that goes to Cardinal games to take in the cityscape and not the game lol.

Televised race coverage always includes lots of ariels including downtown in the distance
Do Cardinal fans care about views out of the stadium? My problem with this setup is more that it's facing a landfill and less that it's not facing DT, for the record.

Under Francois’ ownership, nearly $50 million has been invested in renovations at WWT Raceway, he said. Francois is now plotting an additional $40 million in improvements as NASCAR’s top-tier comes to town. Francois said renovations started the day after the Cup Series race was announced on Sept. 15. He said the roughly $40 million renovation effort will take place in phases with the expectation it will wrap in early 2025. The renovations will be funded through personal equity and commercial loans, Francois said.

WWT Raceway’s NASCAR Cup Series event is projected to have an economic impact of at least $60 million for the region, according to an economic impact study from the Rawlings Sports Business Management Department at Maryville University. The study projects total weekend attendance of 98,000, 34,000 hotel room nights booked and $12 million in food and beverage spending.

If you go to pretty much any oval track in the country, the seats are always on either the south/west side of the track. Precisely because the sun sets and disrupts tv cameras and fans' views. Just sitting at an evening Cards game in the bleachers sucks when the sun sets and peeks thru the stadium roof; even with sunglasses on.

Francois said WWT Raceway’s footprint spanned about 150 acres in 2011 when he purchased the facility and that it has since expanded to encompass nearly 700 acres. A major expansion came in 2019 when WWT Raceway acquired the adjacent Gateway National Golf Links, an 18-hole, 220-acre golf course located north of its racing oval.
Francois said WWT Raceway’s land acquisition deals are part of the “commitment we’re making to lay the groundwork for a long-term effort to make sure racing is in the St. Louis region for a long, long time.” He said they provide the raceway with an opportunity to target commercial development around its facility.
“I believe now we have the land available for what our future development needs will be. The next step of this is working with a land planner as we develop the ideas and thoughts to bring a world-class entertainment zone to the raceway,” he said.

I'm not a NASCAR guy in any kind of way, but I do think it's great that the event is back in the St. Louis area, and that it seems to be pretty successful.
I remember a few months ago, the owner of World Wide Technology Raceway was wanting to add an entertainment district to the complex. I hope that ends up happening. It'd be so wonderful for Metro East.

Indy Car put on a great show at Gateway last night. The race was shown live in prime-time on FOX, and they shared several nice shots of St. Louis

Disappointed that the stands were so empty. The tickets were relatively inexpensive, so I'm not sure why they didn't sell better.
