Is that in the little courtyard in the COCA building?

The U City dome in the background gave it away.
Wish I had something to post but I haven't been out and about much lately.

Sticking with University City, maybe this one can be a good one for people to find out.
No, but here are some tips...symphonicpoet wrote: ↑Mar 18, 2021^Just a WAG, but the U. City library?
- It's near the Kingsland and Delmar intersection
- It's in a sidewalk, which is why I find it interesting. So it's one of those things that you notice if you walk with your head down.

^Well, Delmar in U. City is certainly a good place to look at the sidewalk carefully.
Hmmm . . . I think there's one of those on one of the residential streets behind Lewis Park.
Love this detail. If you’ve noticed it. You know exactly where I am.
is it Desloge chapel (SLU Hospital)?
It's the base of Desloge tower itself, not the chapel.

You got it. The sunken garden looks especially awesome with this backdrop of historic architecture.

When's the last time a skyscraper got such an un-ashamedly gothic detail, I wonder? There are often gothic touches in Art Deco, but Desloge is a fairly extreme example. Not the only one, surely, but a very strong one.
It's a fantastic piece of architecture. Love the lighting at night - from 64 it looks something straight out of one of Tim Burton's Batman movies.
I know this isn't quite what you mean, but this New York tower has some sorta-kinda gothic detailing. I think it works on the lower level example, but the stuff at the top is just goofy, IMO:symphonicpoet wrote: ↑Mar 25, 2021When's the last time a skyscraper got such an un-ashamedly gothic detail, I wonder? ^Oh, there's certainly gothic inspired stuff around out there, but that little alcove at SLU would look entirely at home on several of the cathedrals I shot in England a couple of years ago, even though it's off what was an entirely contemporary and quite modern skyscraper when it was new. It's a neat touch. There are certainly gothic revival touches at Wash U. that are every bit as unashamed in their reference, but those are more complete gothic revival neo-Oxbridge buildings, rather than isolated details decorating a much more modernist building in an otherwise contemporary style. Art deco might be one of the last styles that tolerated historicist decoration while attempting to project a sense of forward thinking, or even futurism. Just ruminating out of my depth, really. But however you slice it, it's a cool building. (As is the sort of neo-deco New York tower with its window tracery effect. Though I do agree with you that the base works better than the capital.)
