I agree w/ everyone. I think they used that khaki color granite as a blend to the buildings on the east and west side of it. Black would have been hot...and gave the building some of its own character.

anyway.. I still think it is coool

Black granite? It would have looked like the Death Star.

Though it would have been a nice contrast with the all-white Meridian across the street.

^However, look at it this way. We could have hosted the Star Wars convention every year.

^^The "Death Star" wasn't black. And no, I'm not a Star Wars geek... I'm a Trekkie 8) . Back to the building, I think black would have been a nice contrast to the surrounding buildings and would have gone well with the new windows. There is not enough stone one the exterior of the building to make it imposing. That being said I don't mind the stone they are using, but I would have never Spec'd it myself.

I know, but he said death star. On that note, maybe they should go for the half built look.

Construction on the project was shut down by these two:

^ But like most developers he had to make 'compromises' to stay in control of that!

[edit] Oh yeah, so I'm not a big fan of the marble/granite (whatever it is) either. I haven't seen it in person, so I'll wait to make a final judgement. I hope the retail fronts look good.

Or what we do to most of the buildings in our fair city.

At least no one can complain about the project not using minority contractors.

I like that this building is being reused and not demolished, but I'm no fan of the marble on the facade. I'm guessing it was recycled from some 1970's facade, or it was extremely cheap as it's out of fashion - black, silver, white, blue . . . would have looked sharp.

I agree. I like the way the windows look, but the marble makes it look like Gateway One.

The granite is a Missouri red granite, so it's somewhat appropriate.

I don't think the granite is necessary, though. It's a veneer over concrete block. I would have preferred a more honest expression of the building's materials overall; the other sections of the building show the actual metals and glass that are the actual wall. The sections clad in granite should have been clad in brick or block.

I do think that the contrast between the black and the red granite is nice; all black would have been excessive and dull.

Overall I like this project and the design. The granite is a slight error.

I think it's definitely alright. The windows and metal give it a contemporary flair while the granite material and its color provide a more traditional look. Although there may be minor quibbles, I think it fits in the area quite well. All in all, a successful transformation. Before and after pictures will be nice after completion.

I like it. I initially believed the building should have been torn down, but the redo looks great and contemporary - definitely better than what was there.

I agree. I like the contrast between the new and the traditional and this building looks so much better than I ever thought it would, I'm even encouraging some friends to check it out. Anyone know if they have a leasing office set up yet?

I live across the street and haven't heard anything. It'd be a fabulous addition so I'll be crossing my fingers. Now if we just had pizza by the slice ala Bridge and Tunnel...

According to the sales rep we spoke to this weekend, both the pizza by the slice place and the diner would be underway soon.
