As we know, perceptions are everything. So if having some National Guard guys standing around doing nothing (something they’re accustomed to already) and it improves the perception of safety in the eyes of those who hate on the City for the crime issue, then it’s a win. Maybe the City could finally catch a break from the barrage of news articles making it sound like stepping outside of your house means you’ll get shot.

Legally, I don’t think National Guardsmen can really do anything in the cities (such as enforcing laws). They might be able to deter petty crimes in busy areas, but not much else.

I do think the City is trending in the right direction on crime though. It’ll take time for public sentiment to change though. Still much work to do.

No, it’s a taxpayer ripoff, costing us more than 400k per day for social media posturing.

If they come to STL, we should give them all chainsaws, gloves, and dumpsters and send them up to do any additional tree-work that still needs to be done from the tornado. Have them dig out stumps and level ground... heck, fall (planting season) is almost here have them plant a few thousand trees to replace the ones we lost also!
I think this should be a serious campaign to push when they come. I'm serious. I think at every turn, they should be confronted into taking garden gloves, trash bags and tarps and told in no less terms that we pay for their jobs with our taxes. So if you're going to be in our city, this is our direct expectation of you. I am 100% down to clown like this.

^ That's their stated mission, we shouldn't even have to push for this.
The purpose of the National Guard is a unique dual mission: to serve and protect their state and local communities during natural disasters.../
EDIT: as I am typing this, news is crossing that Trump is sending the NG to Memphis.

The only population trend that likely affects our crime rates over the past 10 years is the declining share of the higher crime North Side as a percentage of our population. Anyone with basic math skills can see that a 10% decrease in the cities population doesn’t explain a 30% drop in crime. Also consider our region hasn’t declined in population in that time period and crime in the city also comes from those living elsewhere in the region.

The Fed uses the census annual guesstimate, which classifies the City as a County and uses the county methodology, which is basically the statewide pop divided into counties by formula. At bare minimum we start off by 5,000 less than it should be

Right. But that wouldn’t effect the rate of population change (which is what’s relevant here), unless they changed the methodology during the time period we are discussing.

"Six Black and Hispanic workers on the Kansas City Streetcar extension project have filed a lawsuit against their employers, alleging they faced racial slurs and threatening behavior on job sites, including incidents in which other workers allegedly made menacing comments about nooses and referred to Black people as “monkeys.”

The lawsuit alleges workers of color faced a “culture of race-based hostility and discrimination” on job sites, where attorneys said there were “monthly and sometimes weekly and daily” instances of racial epithets and derogatory statements made by white employees.

Additionally, attorneys for the men allege one of them learned a foreman on the project was a member of the Proud Boys, a white nationalist group."

Is Kansas City all right?

Sheesh.

KMOV - Police: Local man shoots elderly woman during road rage, tells officers he has pipe bomb during questioning

John Leb, 21, of the 8100 block of Briarhaven Trail in St. Louis [County], Missouri, was charged on Thursday with first-degree assault, two counts of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and second-degree terrorist threat. He is being held on a $250,000 cash-only, no 10% bond.
According to charging documents, on September 8, Leb fired “at least” three bullets into a car, shooting a woman in her 80s. One of the bullets hit the woman’s hand, and she was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Documents say Leb left the scene, was later identified by his car, and was arrested.

^Getting down below one in a thousand inside our fair city where the denominator makes that difficult is nice. Puts some lie to the naysayers who say the reduction is just population loss.

Why is removing the obviously corrupt and bad Sheriff the one anti-Democratic thing the state can't figure out how to do in an expedited manner?

If Spencer can get Hayden to agree to come out of retirement and Kehoe to appoint him, that would he a very big W for her administration.
