This nightclub recently reopened after another shooting. Didn’t St. Louis just have multiple people shot outside a night club? Including a child. This could be St. Louis tonight, this weekend, next month.
St. Louis is Chicago.
I mean not really. I can't remember any shooting in STL where a car of gunmen opened fire into a large crowd at an event in what is effectively a terrorist attack.
Then you’re not paying attention. Literally 18 people hit? No, but similar circumstances have occurred multiple times at parties and clubs in St. Louis just this last year.
The obvious point is that the same conditions that created this in Chicago are VERY possible in St. Louis.
Not to mention. A mass shooting like this one is possible in every square mile of the US.

It's possible anywhere large gatherings happen. But it hasn't happened in STL or most other places in the country.
While there was plenty last night, I have been pleasantly surprised at the decline of fireworks this fireworks season. At least in my neck of the woods.

I’m in U city. But it seems much quieter this year. Especially after 10 or so. There were some when it got dark but not all thru the night til 1 or 2 am like usual.
Crime in St. Louis City is down 11.47% vs last year at end of June. Violent Crime is down 14.50% vs last year and down 26% vs 2 years ago at end of June.

It felt like the St. Louis police were posting on social media every hour (or more often). Was there really that much of a show of force downtown? How'd that translate to fewer fireworks and other shenanigans?

At the very least, sharing what they are doing builds some confidence the force is doing something, and if this cycles through to those who are behind it, offers at least some deterrence, or so I would hope. I would also hope these parents get a wake up to be a little more aware of what is going on. AND, I am glad guns and ATV's were confiscated. I am sure they will get a gun elsewhere, but those ATV's have to hurt a little. I do wonder what getting these back looks like.
I didn't even realize this, but the police takeover includes both a revert back to the back room disciplinary process where the department issues discipline on its own without any real oversight AND it limits the pool of new police chiefs to the current commanders.
Every single stride the SLMPD has made in the last 12 years towards less corruption, more transparency, and more trust is going to be thoroughly undone.
Says so much that the city hasn't filed a lawsuit or signed onto one to try stopping this.
But thank God we removed those parked cars in a parking garage. That was top priority. Losing a resident because of abandoned cars in a residential neighborhood on a nuisance property? Nah nothing can be done.
I am not sure why Aldridge and Sonnier are putting themselves out there for an incompetent, marginally elected, loser. Not setting clear ownership here is a slap in the face to the criminal justice reform they've both advocated for. Not to mention a serious liability to the City. Very disappointing.
"But in a committee hearing Thursday, Alderman Rasheen Aldridge, of downtown, said he thought it would be unwise to try to dictate the sheriff’s responsibilities while Montgomery and Bailey are arguing about them in court.
He also raised concerns about a proposed amendment to Devoti’s bill that would require the sheriff to justify each of his office’s expenditures, in writing, to the city comptroller. The city, he said, shouldn’t be making special rules for one office."
Sonnier's "concerns" seemed plainly stupid. Clearly not good faith.
The best course of action would be for Spencer to publicly support the removal of Montgomery, and then work with Kehoe to appoint a new Sheriff. It worked out pretty well with the Circuit Attorney's Office, though Parsons was definitely more good faith than Kehoe. Changing the laws behind how the department is regulated probably is not necessary just for one particular bad apple who could be removed in the near future. It's not really "state interference" if the city is working with the state.
I'd personally like to see the department disbanded and merged with SLMPD or the elected office made an appointed office and their LE powers limited to court security.
Credit to Spencer for voicing objections to this decision.
Utility body cameras are not designed for police use. It makes absolutely no sense that we are using them and it makes even less sense that we just signed an extension with them when there was a better alternative- Axon- which were backed by Chief Tracy and are actually designed for police.
The only way this decision was made was through corruption, and the city should not stand for it. Unsurprisingly, the police board is a scam and a joke with no interest in betterment of the police department or the city.
Edit: After reading the BJ version, it says the board unanimously approved the contract with Utility. So not sure if Spencer actually opposed this. If she did, then good. If not, then I don't know what she's thinking.
She likely doesn't have any other option. Kehoe is correct that the Senate will not support Sheriff employee on the board, especially this sheriff. I doubt the other board members would be willing to ruffle senate or Kehoe feathers by protecting her. She made herself irrelevant to the board with/without a formal removal process.
The better question at this point... would they support maintaining her appointment if she backed out of the Sheriff's office job? Unsurprisingly this shows a lack of professional self-awareness that should be embarrassing to Kehoe and his "vetting" process. I'm not sure he would forgive/forget that.
