Likewise, that store has meant a lot to our family. We had long-gone family members in the John Viviano wedding photos that the store used to have hanging up.

Looking it up just now, that wedding was back in 1929.

If the spirit of Viviano's isn't in the new space, which I'm sure will be renovated, I'll be pretty disappointed.

The Chesterfield and Fenton locations simply aren't the same thing.

Viviano's is closing on The Hill on May 3, 2025.

This place has meant a lot to my family for many years. I'll be very sad to see them go.

Seems like DiGregorio's has been running up the score on them for a while, especially considering they're planning an expansion.

If I understand the articles correctly, Viviano's is selling to someone with plans and they say that the "neighborhood is in good hands."
Getting in the conversation late, but I completely agree. Viviano's on the Hill is the flagship. The others can't compare. I have been going in there since I can remember. The smell, the look, the feel, cannot be replicated. I am so sad about this, but as we have come to find, nothing lasts forever. STL has lost SO many Hill (Hill area) staples in recent years, many Catholic schools in South City, Gian-Tony's (for sale), Uncle Bills (so glad the Garcia's saved it), Hanneke Hardware, LoRusso's, Brazie's, Courtesy Drive-In & now Viviano's. I would love to see another Italian Grocer/restaurant go in there & keep the decor. The Hill will never be same without the original & best Viviano's.

If anyone gets the scoop on what will come next in that space, please let us know. Thanks!

I heard on Saturday that Digregorio's has purchased the former Viviano's building with no specific plan for repurposing it other than keeping out the competition. That being said, I do not think it will just sit empty, but they will have a say in what goes in there. Anyone heard this?

Bummer, I thought they had great food, but I do understand that being all vegan is a turn-off for some people.

The Hill storefront of Italian grocer John Viviano & Sons, which closed Saturday, has been acquired by nearby DiGregorio’s Italian Market.

Already a casualty at Delmar Maker District. Alpha's ABC Distillery Bar is permanently closed. Peaked in the window yesterday and it was cleared out. I believe it's the largest space in that glorified strip mall. Notable, the very large expensive tanks have all been left behind though.

Idk if I would be rooting against and negative about developments in the Delmar Maker District. First time in a long time that people are actually trying to leverage Delmar to connect neighborhoods. I have been a little worried that the businesses trying this are not seeing the customer support they need.

Hey man, I'm just calling it as I see it. I've been there a couple times now. I very much do give people credit where it's due for being the ones who are trying to BE the actual change on that corridor. They are doing the hard work. No one can take that away. However...it just doesn't seem very sustainable...as an entire concept. Unless the whole thing is being heavily subsidized, I don't think it's going to change the makeup of the street whatsoever. The Fountain on Delmar isn't doing very well either I was told. Unfortunately, that area is still a hard sell for to many potential patrons. It's a risky experiment.

That entire Delmar strip needs residential in a bad way. There's plenty of space for it.

Yes that. And also, it doesn't help with perception one bit that directly next door to this is an old dilapidated 4-family whos' entire backside has fallen out and all the windows are busted out. That's the first thing you see when turning onto Delmar at Union.

This is kinda my thought as I read through. The area needs new residential growth if we want actual new growth instead of just moving money being spent from one place to another.

That’s too bad. I loved that place but it never was very busy when I was there. Was hoping using it for production would outweigh lack of business. I was hoping Nixta opening would help it out

Would also be good if Lake avenue was at least pedestrian accessible, having it locked up is a bad look for a lot of reasons.

Interesting. I would have probably tried to stay open for summer but maybe they needed to do it now.

That is the rumor in the neighborhood but I was reassured that expansion was moving forward.  Approvals have been slow from what I was told.
