I believe Starbucks closed, lost their franchise license from what I read
How does a franchise lose it's license that fast? Unless of course if this is a union busting deal.

In the app the store is still there, but listed as closed.

Starbucks doesn't do franchises, that's why all the workers can be in the same union. The stores are 100% company owned.

Park place market/cafe is now open. They had decent traffic today - it was exhilarating to see that. On their opening day, they were swatting flies.
and the WashU set from the west side of Skinky-D doesn't go east, and the mansion people on the east side of DeBP don't go west of their impenetrable walls.
That's great to hear. I am interested in understanding your comment on "impenetrable walls" - is that deliberate or just a physical barrier?
Walk up Union. There are literally walls up the east side of Union blocking Deb. Place from the CWE.

Yeah Kingsbury Pl, Waterman Pl, and Washington Terrace can't even be entered via the sidewalk without a key from Belt and Clara.

I guess they have their own HOA and paving and resurfacing etc.

Isn’t that whole deal with the Starbucks at Hanley and wydown that it was company owned and now a franchisee is going to reopen it?

I guess it technically isn’t a franchise but sounds like the same thing.

No, you cannot franchise a Starbucks because all of its locations are owned by the company. However, Starbucks does license some of its stores, which is similar to being a franchise owner. As of 2023, about 49% of Starbucks' more than 35,000 outlets were licensed.

Oh it's very deliberate. There are three of those odious private streets running west from Union with car entrances only on Union, and massive, ten foot tall brick walls and iron gates prohibiting pedestrian ingress from Delmar, Clara, Waterman 55XX or Pershing. The two northern streets run twice as far west into the neighborhood, to Clara, as does the private section of Waterman, just to Belt. The homes vary from maybe $700K to $1.75M unless someone dies in one that hasn't been renovated since 1947.

They're low density and they're not gonna contribute to the health of a pedestrian based business South or west of the Great Wall of DeBaliviere.

I am hearing two conflicting stories about Starbucks. One, they were never a franchisee and will not receive one due to low sales.  Two, they are negotiating lease with the management as rent is high.

Thank you for the insight @throatybeard

I just cannot see the sales being that low. That corner might have more foot traffic than any other intersection in the city after Lindell/Euclid. They definitely always had customer flow. Expo must ask too much rent considering the empty retail bays

It is gut wrenching to see Park Place Market getting hit with setbacks. They were trying to expand and now tornado has forced them to stay shut. Does anyone know what is the plan for that building - is park place market going to open at some point?

Unfortunately Park Place Market has closed permanently. As has all retail on that block now.

Man they were nice people at Park Place, Loved what they did with their retail front and sidewalk. Really were trying to contribute to the neighborhood. Tornado just is devastating to our city

How this block has failed with retail is just crazy. Not even a gym wants one of those Expo bays? I mean I am shocked it’s went like this 4 years in

I think once a ton of the apartments and condos reopen after tornado repairs are completed, you’ll see interest in retail bays on Debaliviere increase. The tornado set progress back a little bit.

That strip mall always had pretty high occupancy, but when i was a student at crossroads it was widely assumed at a least few of them were fronts.
