St. Louis County is committing 22.2% of its Rams windfall -- $40 million of $180 million -- to paving roads; or, in other words, what they should already be paying for.

Car-dependency strikes again.

Now the Cleveland Browns want to build a dome out in the suburbs.

Apart from the public funds aspect, the location isn't bad. NFL stadiums aren't the best use of downtown real estate (only 9 home games a year) and this site has an RTA station right there.

The space downtown should be converted into a signature lakefront park. I would also argue the nearby airport should be closed and folded into this park.

I think a boardwalk makes more sense than a straight up park.

They should just do what the city does and not pave anything.

Jacksonville talking $1.4 billion redo of the Jaguars stadium. $700 million each from Duvall County and the team.

With that much money, they better be renovating like it's a whole new stadium

Just a reminder, the Rams wanted a $750 million dollar renovation of the dome.  Chump change compared to what current teams are requesting / getting.

I am still appreciative that STL is in vanguard of saying no to massive stadium subsidies.  I’m okay with reasonable public support but the age of solely publicly built stadiums should be at an end.

The Carolina Panthers unveiled their proposed upgrades to Bank of America Stadium.
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/402 ... enovations
  • Sounds like $650 million public money and $700 million from the Panthers.
  • Keeps going existing hotel and dining tax.
  • 20 year lease with team buyout option at year 15.
  • Bank of America stadium remains open air and Charlotte FC keeps playing there

They are. One season will have reduced capacity and another 1 or 2 seasons they are playing somewhere else (Orlando or Gainesville)

I've lived in Jacksonville before. Not much going on there, so losing the Jags would be a major civic blow. It is a very conservative region, so I don't know if the public will support this much public funding, but football is king in FL, so who knows. What's crazy is that the Jacksonville metro is about half the size of St. Louis and they're about to make everyone pay about $500 towards a privately owned franchise. There are some super impoverished areas in Jacksonville too, that could definitely use that kind of infusion of cash. They have areas in Jacksonville that are so rundown and without services, they make North St. Louis look like paradise.

Yes, but an important addition (if I recall correctly):

Even with that $750 million reno, Kroenke wouldn't sign a long-term lease.

Don't forget that the Dome renovation proposal was so over-the-top that it would have meant 12-18 months of nothing getting booked into the convention center because so much work was being done on the sides that touch. Or at best all they could have used was Halls 1 and 2.

$750M for a 10 year lease.
$75M per year
$9.3M per game

You know they’d be gone year 11. The Rams proposal was purposely crafted for the City to say ‘no’ so they could crank up the relo machine with a ‘clean’ conscience.

Kroenke wanted the East half of the dome torn down and rebuilt further for the field. The arbitration committee agreed with Kroenke because the Dallas stadium seating was new and had seats further from the field.

Sounds like an Adventure for the Team, at least they'll be travelling a lil' bit more

Maybe you're looking too deep in it, not everything turns out to be a hidden consipracy theory.

Although it doesn't seem that unplausable if you think about it...

So what do they want? More seats? Seats further from the field? Expanding the field in place of the seats? Adding more seats?

None of the above. Kroenke just wanted out.

For those that don't remember/weren't here, Kroenke "wanted" half of the Edward Jones Dome torn down and a new extension built eastward. The estimate was the Rams would have had to play elsewhere for 2 or 3 seasons and then they wouldn't extend the lease even a little bit. His proposal was clearly so over the top is that all he wanted was out of St. Louis.

Did not mean for us to re-litigate Rams intent, but rather that the “over the top ask” is insignificant by team requests now. Now it seems to be a 50-50 split between teams and cities.

I agree they would have eventually left regardless.

Honestly, with this deal we probably would have still seen the Rams here.  The Chargers and Raiders would have ended up back in LA in the joint stadium they were planning to build. Only reason Kroenke offered this deal is because he knew we would balk at it.

If the Chiefs go to Kansas I’m sure Kansas City MO will blame St. Louis.

On the other hand, imagine what can be built on the site after you tear up the stadiums and the veritable sea of parking around them. No NIMBY's there to complain about traffic!

After their ownership voted with Kroenke?
To make a play for full market share of MO?
Fine. Whatever.

Tell the Hunts. I want them to know it was me.
