Modern has been a tremendous addition to Oakland. King’s Oak food is fantastic (other than the Gumbo imo)

Blue Jay Brewing, located at 2710 Locust , St. Louis, MO has officially opened. Midtown/Downtown West is becoming a destination for breweries with Wellspent, Urban Chestnut, Blue Jay and both Brick River and Schlafly a short walk away.

^Saw that. Need to add it to my little brewery map. Good luck to them. I guess they're former Urban Chestnut folks. I hope there's no ill will there, as I'm rather fond of Urban Chestnut, and also want to see new brewers succeed. But in the short bit I read on . . . channel 5? (Whoever excerpted the Biz Journal article) I couldn't really tell. I need to go read the original.

One of their inaugural beers is a collab with UCBC so I don't think there's any bad blood

Would have been nice if the landlord didn't force Center Ice to vacate due to unreasonable rent increases.

A number of local breweries and brewers have a connection to UCBC. In fact, Old Bakery Beer in Alton was also founded by two Urban Chestnut alums, so I don't think that UCBC has any ill will to either or any of their other brewers that have moved on.

Glad to hear that!

I could get down with that. I also want to see a new Escape from New York sequel featuring all of them: Escape from the Brewery Mile.

Yeah, that one was frustrating. Never even so much as got in there, and that, that right there annoys me.

If you can convince them to open up on "Southerer Grand" (i.e. in my own neighborhood, say somewhere between Bates and the park) you could get me in some fun trouble.

In my St. Louis Fantasy Map i have the old Jefferson Bank at Jefferson and Washington (currently VA Recovery Center) rehabbed into a top tier Beer Museum.  In this ideal scenario they would Uncover the old Uhrig Cave as part of the museums permanent exhibits.  Would fit in PERFECTLY along the Brewery Mile.

It would be great to have a district of breweries within walking distance of each other, brewery mile is certainly nice but hardly cohesive until a few more fill it out. Perhaps to further establish the identity the breweries could collaborate on a little weekend trolley that travels between each of the breweries. Price of admission is a beer.

I love the areas where you have five or six breweries within the same few blocks like Brewers Alley in KC or the North Loop in Minneapolis. Really makes a nice destination where you can stumble out of one into another. Midtown alley could definitely become this and is the closest to doing so. I've always thought the Landing or Lemp complex would be great spots for a bunch of taprooms to congregate too, although obviously there is no momentum for such a thing at the moment.

Unfortunately the craft beer industry is very hungover from the past decade of growth. We won't be seeing a lot of new expansion anytime soon. These small production shops like Blue Jay and Little Lager are going to be the majority of what we see pop up the next few years.

^That was another nice thing Center Ice did for a while. When the bus wasn't needed for Blues games on the weekends, they ran a shuttle loop from Center Ice to Twisted Roots, UCBC on Washington, Wellspent, Brick River, and Schlafly.

I've always wanted one big bier hall that had a selection of local beers and had 5 or 6 taps set aside so each local brewery could take turns as the featured selection for a month at a time. 1711 Locust would be the dream location for it just to save that building.

The plans have shifted (for the better) from the initial renderings, needless to say it's going to be quite the addition to Kirkwood.

Soft opening of 4-Hands Peacemaker Kirkwood happened this weekend. Beautiful design.

Had lunch at 4-Hands Kirkwood indoors today for the first time.   Love the food, beer, and setup.  You seat yourself and use the QR code on the table to read the menu and order just the food.  And a separate QR code for drinks.  And you pay thru your phone for each separately, and can keep the drink tab open if you intend to order more drinks.  All via Toast.  Then the food  and drinks just show up separately.  Since you paid online, you can just leave any time.

Or you can order at the counter or one of the 2 bars, I understand.  I hear Taco Buddha has a similar set-up.

That’s how Pizza Champ ordering is. It’s weird to be honest.

It’s like a food place and beer place operating separately but sharing the room.

^There's more and more of that. Perrenial Artisan has a similar relationship with the sandwich joint in there space. And I think UCBC may be going that way. (The menu changed. You can still pay through the same ticket, but the name on the sandwiches is different now.)

And the scan the code from your table thing almost seems like the way it's going to be everywhere pretty soon. Makes me sad. I hate trying to read that crap on a phone screen. (There's just not enough real estate there to make it a pleasant experience.)

Like their beer and pizza and hope they don't go under. Do the owners live in the States still or are they back in Germany? I know they bought a small brewery in Bavaria a while ago so I wonder how hands on they are. Seems to me like they've lost ground to 4hands whereas I saw them as being ahead of the pack early on.

4Hands sells more beer and has more locations, but as far as the beer goes it's apples and oranges. Completely different brewing philosophies.

I would assume most of these breweries that expanded a lot post 2018 are facing some pretty steep debt burdens. Especially with higher interest rates. Not too worried about UCBC, but I wouldn't be supervised to see 10+ local operations go under in the next five years. Craft beer is a tough business right now.

Not to mention how tastes have shifted away from beer at an accelerated rate with the popularization of canned seltzer, cocktails, and better N/A options.

Bankruptcy itself doesn’t worry me. Sounds like they’ve got a good investor and that Florian will remain apart of the management and ownership. Bankruptcy isn’t a bad word, especially Ch. 11
