Just to state the obvious, the Winter Classic (and the variations of it such as the NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe) is a way for the NHL to host hockey in 1) places that otherwise wouldn't ever see an NHL game and 2) utilize some of the coolest/most historic venues that otherwise would never host a hockey game.  There are dozens of places that should be viewed as obvious potential sites: Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Mile High Stadium or Coors Field in Denver, Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Michie Stadium at West Point and then just a ton of non-stadium venues like Lake Placid, anywhere in Alaska, etc. Basically just name the largest college town in North America or the most iconic stadiums and they'd be on any list.

All this to say that I don't see the city of St. Louis hosting another Winter Classic for quite some time.  At least for 20 years, if not longer (since the league has 32 teams it really should be closer to 30 years but... who knows if the NHL really would want to see an outdoor classic held in, say, Tampa or Miami and deal with the nearly impossible logistics of trying to keep the rink in playable shape outside).  That said, if the Blues did push hard to "host" a game in KC at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, the League may be a bit more interested as it would be a major market with a stadium that would draw lots of interest.
I don't know if two decades is a fair number. Plus you're forgetting the Heritage Classic where two of the Canadian teams play outdoors. (Though this year's game features the Buffalo Sabres.)
The Avalanche have already had two Stadium series games: one at Coors and one at the Air Force Academy. But they could easily have games at Mile High (not a Winter Classic) or at the University of Colorado. The Blues going there might be a good call given how many transplants there are in the Denver area. Just watch a Blues game or listen to it on the radio and and when the Blues score there's a large cheer.

Nashville is hosting Tampa Bay this year's Stadium Series game and Carolina has next year's. It would not suck if the Blues did a Stadium Series or Winter Classic game in Nashville at some point in the future.

Don't be surprised if there's an Outdoor Classic held at Arrowhead in the coming years, even if the Blues aren't involved.

I don't know. They couldn't do a Winter Classic/New Years Eve day game due to the Chiefs and football conflicts.

If they did do a Stadium Series game at Arrowhead, Blues/Avalanche would be the main candidate that makes sense. I know the Blues made a run a while ago at getting a minor league affiliate in KC, but the Hunt family torpedoed it. Maybe if that door opens again it could be an option. The Blues did play a pre season game in Independence that was well received.

But I still think Folsom Field is too picturesque to not be a first choice.

Going for 10 in a row tonight, this team is on fire! Good time to be peaking too, let's keep this rolling in the playoffs.

LGB!

I never really looked into it. Why did Hunt torpedo the Blues have a minor league team in KC? Does he not want the sports dollars further diluted in the KC market?

I think both sides have been mum: but one guess was about ownership % of the minor league team. Plus maybe even as far as the Hunt family wanting part ownership of the Blues which made some uneasy as that could be a play for them to move the team.

I would be VERY nervous if the Hunts had anything to do with the Blues. NO WAY!

Thankfully that didn't happen. With all of the ownership instability over the history of the Blues, I would be concerned if any out of town entity owns the Blues. There is no loyalty in Missouri, as proven by StanK, unless that owner is a true-blue St. Louisian like the Taylors.

IIRC the Blues current ownership is Stillman as primary (of course) and the following minority owners are
-other Danforths
-Jim Kavanaugh of WWT
-Taylor family
-other Enterprise people not part of the Taylor family
-Tom Schlafly and Don Luxx

^^ Yep, that's a solid local ownership group.

And I have complete faith in the Dewitt's as well, despite not being from STL. We are lucky to have two (hopefully three soon!) engaged, active owners who don't skimp on the product.

They looked pretty good in those last few games.  I was at Game 6, it was awesome.

Not sure they stand a chance against Colorado though...

I love those post-series handshakes; I wish other sports would do something similar.

Colorado is going to be tough.

I'm not sure the Blues have the defense or goaltending to win this series, but that's why they play the game.

New look Blues!

Sucks losing Perron though. He lived in the house directly behind my favorite bar and I always enjoyed our random run ins. Guess I’ll have to settle for Binner sightings around downtown Clayton when he walks his dog. :(

While we’re on the subject…this should be the new Red Wings logo.

And bring them back to the Central! It’s unnatural not having the three rust belt shitholes (St. Louis, Detroit and Chicago) beating the Christ out of each other on a regular basis like the old days.

The "Chuck" Norris division: hockey the way God intended it.
  • Chicago Black Hawks
  • Detroit Red Wings
  • Minnesota North Stars
  • St. Louis Blues
  • Toronto Maple Leafs
The best part of that era was the home & home series the Blues and Blackhawks used to always do the week between Christmas and New Years.  The beer and blood flowed in the aisles of both buildings (St. Louis Arena/Chicago Stadium) from all the fights.

Matt Tkachuk rumors flying.  Pundits speculating a trade by end of week.  Think we can send Tarasenko and Krug their way?  Would you do that deal?

I'd send Tarasenko and Kyrou, which is what it will probably take.

I’ve already heard Kyrou, Krug and a 1st rounder. CGY turned it down. Could be bullsh*t too.

I hear the Cards are a significant suitor for Soto…could be a big week for STL free agency.

I think Armstrong clears the cupboard to land Matt Tkachuk for rest of his career.

Soto would be huge.  A new murderers row.

Not sure about sending Kyrou away, but Tkachuk would be a huge get.

One would hope Albert did all he could. Getting Soto would be an amazing "passing of the torch". The question is if the Cardinals can match the Mets, Dodgers and Yankees and their truly bottomless check books.

Lets say Blues send Tank and Kyrou for Tkachuk...

we'd lose 34 goals in Tank, 27 in Kyrou and 27 in Perron this offseason for a total of 88 goals and replace it with 42 goal Tkachuk
