I can't wait to take my eternally lazy dog here just to flaunt it in front of the showboat dogs.

Bar K was really cool. Will definitely be going there a lot.

Is it real grass or some kind of artificial turf?

Any idea how many people were showing up without dogs?

I kind of love how it hugs both of the train lines. Pretty sweet spot

Is there any real opportunity for a ped bridge over the tracks into the grove? Love the concept and amenity… just wish it wasn’t only safely accessible to this in cars.

They should do a Neighborhood Sidewalk Campaign and suggest customers donate $0.10-$1 per beer. Small money but could add up and be leveraged against other funds.

A ped bridge and sidewalk/intersection improvements along Vandeventer and McRee could really get this area moving.

I would assume only the ones who came with a friend who brought a dog

A pedestrian bridge at Hunt/Taylor is so obvious, especially as McRee continues to densify.

Wasn’t there an older proposal to extend Taylor over the tracks to McRee?

So how does this work? Membership is required - does that mean that only members can go? Or is membership for access to the dog park and anyone can show up for a drink?

Not a snarky question here as I'm a total dog lover and genuinely interested, but how is the turf cleaned?  Maybe there's some sort of drainage system where it can be hosed down?

As I understand it:

-people are always free to enter
-dogs either need a membership or can pay a $10 fee for a guest entry

I saw workers spraying down and scrubbing spots where dogs went. Don’t know much beyond that.

That would be an interesting thought.

But while I'm all for repairing/enhancing the street grid, I shudder at the thought of BJC employees using more of Taylor as their race track to and from work.

There was an old voluntary effort from UIC that looked at this area, which included a new bridge at Taylor over the train tracks.  https://nextstl.com/2012/08/vandegrove- ... ision-for/

I wonder why they didn't keep a few more of the preexisting trees? At least they left a few big ones down in the northeast corner, but several additional trees scattered around the site would have gone a long way during the summer. That relatively minor complaint aside, this place looks awesome.

But, maybe I should give them the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps the trees that remain are all that were really worth saving. Some aerial photos make the area look more wooded than perhaps it truly was.

Man... curious to see what the stats are on this one. Looks pretty huge - quick count is 55 units per floor? (may deserve its own thread - or we can change the title to McRee Redevelopment Area?)

Looks like 268 total units according to the apartment type schedule.

STL Biz Journal: Apartments, not retail, now pitched for site next to dog park-bar in Forest Park Southeast
  • 4591 McRee, just west of BarK
  • $73MM project (estimated)
  • 268 apartments w/ both a parking lot and a garage
  • Financing expected to close in June
  • Construction to start after financing closes with delivery in 2024
  • Incentives could change with development type change, but submitted proposal states "not a substantial modification of the Plan"
I think I prefer this plan over the original. Increased residential in the central corridor is great and necessary, especially as this neighborhood improves. Meanwhile, existing central corridor business districts, from Downtown to Cortex, can continue to develop & grow without having to compete with this site.

^ With there being so much demand for living in Forest Park South East, creating more supply next door seems like a smart bet. Even more so if they end up connecting Taylor with McRee like in the site-map posted a few months ago.

Would Taylor and McRee be connected with vehicular access? Because that would be a game-changer for the area.

Even if we could just have a pedestrian connection, it'd be wonderful.

no idea if it will happen, but I think a pedestrian/bike only connection would almost be preferable to a vehicle connection here, to avoid funneling more cars into the Grove
